OBJECTIVES: To define the phenotype of congenital alveolar capillary dysplasia (ACD) as a first step toward mapping the responsible gene(s).
STUDY DESIGN: Analysis of pathology reports and microscopic slides of 23 subjects with ACD and sequence analysis of two candidate genes.
RESULTS: Our review of the pre- and postmortem records delineates both the natural history of this condition and the associated anomalies. Lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH), also called pyogenic granuloma, is a benign vascular tumor that is pedunculated on the skin and the mucous membranes of the oral cavity. This disease occurs in all ages, but more often in the 3rd decade, and is seen in females more than males. A patient with a pyogenic granuloma which occurred in an unusual location and at an earlier age is presented. Pyogenic granuloma is not an uncommon entity which may occur on oral mucosa, face and fingers. The most frequent location encountered for oral cavity pyogenic granuloma is the gingiva and the tongue is a rare location for its occurrence. These lesions are usually seen between 11 and 40 years age. Surgical excision and removal of etiological factors are needed for treatment.

This study demonstrates the separation of cold medicine ingredients (e.g., phenylpropanolamine, dextromethorphan, chlorpheniramine maleate, and paracetamol) by capillary zone electrophoresis and micellar electrokinetic chromatography. Peripapillary staphyloma is usually unassociated with other ocular and systemic anomalies. A 5-year-old girl presented with peripapillary staphyloma in association with extensive ipsilateral orofacial capillary hemangioma involving the right forehead, right upper and lower eyelids, the right cheek, and the hard palate. Hemoglobin A2 (HbA2) comprises about 2.2% of the total hemoglobin in the erythrocytes. The separation and quantitation of this minor hemoglobin by capillary electrophoresis (CE) using an arginine Tris buffer is described. Some of the variables affecting the accuracy and precision of HbA2 quantification are investigated. Furthermore, the quantification of this hemoglobin by CE is compared to that of a microcolumn chromatography method. The CE method is better suited than the microcolumn method for measuring HbA2 in the sickle cell trait.

Thoracic hemangiomatosis is an extremely rare condition of the thorax of unknown origin: thin-walled capillary blood vessels infiltrate the lung parenchyma, blood vessels, interlobular septa, bronchiolar walls and pleura. The infiltration of pulmonary veins and venules induces secondary pulmonary veno-occlusive disease and pulmonary hypertension with a slowly progressive clinical course. This condition can be associated with vascular dementia and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).

PURPOSE: Retinal capillary hemangioma, often associated with von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, is not characteristically seen in other conditions. We report a patient with Marshall-Stickler syndrome who had a retinal capillary hemangioma.
METHOD: A 31-year-old man with Marshall-Stickler syndrome was evaluated for a retinal vascular tumor.
RESULTS: Evaluation showed a retinal capillary hemangioma of the von Hippel type. Magnetic resonance imaging disclosed no tumors of brain, kidney, or other organs. The retinal tumor was treated with cryotherapy.
