Hereditary Spherocytosis (HS) is a type of hemolytic anemia characterized by a defect in the membrane of red blood cells, which causes them to assume a spherical shape, become osmotically fragile, and be prone to early hemolysis. While it is relatively well understood in the medical field, there is limited evidence regarding the dental management of patients with this condition. Therefore, this report aims to present a case involving the extraction of permanent teeth before splenectomy in a child with HS who had been hospitalized. Additionally, treatment guidelines for these patients are propo

Patients with cirrhosis often develop malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, leading to a worse prognosis and increased mortality. Our main goal was to assess the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. This was a prospective single-center study including 125 consecutive patients hospitalized for acute decompensation of cirrhosis (mostly of alcoholic etiology). A blood test including trace elements and vitamins was performed on admission. The main micronutrient deficiencies observed were vitamin D (in 94.5%), vitamin A (93.5%), vitamin B6 (60.8%

PURPOSE: Our aim was to investigate the factors associated with mother-child separation at discharge, after joint hospitalization in psychiatric mother-baby units (MBUs) in France and Belgium. Because parents with postpartum psychiatric disorders are at risk of disturbed parent-infant interactions, their infants have an increased risk of an unstable early foundation. They may be particularly vulnerable to environmental stress and have a higher risk of developing some psychiatric disorders in adulthood.
METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study of 1,018 women with postpartum psychiatric dis

Meningococcal disease is a rare, rapidly progressing condition which may be difficult to diagnose, disproportionally affects children, and has high morbidity and mortality. Accurate incidence estimates are needed to monitor the effectiveness of vaccination and treatment. We used linked notification, hospital, mortality and birth data for all children of an Australian state (2000-2007) to estimate the incidence of meningococcal disease. A total of 595 cases were notified, 684 cases had a hospital diagnosis, and 26 cases died from meningococcal disease. All deaths were notified, but only 68% (46

Measles infection remains a serious threat to child survival in the developing world despite vaccination and treatment with vitamin A. This report reviews the epidemiology of measles in HIV-infected children in Africa. In hospitalized infants, the rate of malnutrition before measles and the rate of death after measles are both higher in HIV-positive than in HIV-negative infants. However, the rates of pneumonia and diarrhea in infants hospitalized with measles are the same in HIV-positive as in HIV-negative infants. In an autopsy study, measles was associated with death in HIV-positive children
