A series of 20 patients with granular lymphocyte proliferative disorders (GLPD) is reported. The criterion of inclusion was presence of persistent (> or = 6 months) granular lymphocytosis in the absence of any causative illness. Diagnoses made upon analytical control in half the patients of splenomegaly (25%) and hepatomegaly (25%) were infrequent. In vitro megakaryocyte colony formation was studied in 25 patients with chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), and compared to 16 controls. A significantly lower number of megakaryocyte progenitors (CFU-MK) was observed in patients (10.8 +/- 12.0 CFU-MK per 10(5) bone-marrow non-adherent mononuclear cells (NAMC), compared to controls (22.5 +/- 15.4 CFU-MK); P < 0.002. Mouse interferon inhibits proliferation of bone-marrow derived macrophages. The degree of inhibition of cell proliferation is significant influenced by the genotype of the bone marrow donor in that C57BL/6 cells are more resistant to the cell multiplication inhibitory effect of interferon than are BALB/c cells. These results thus confirm earlier observations using murine erythroid precursors as target cells and point to the existence of genes modulating the action of interferon.

Houttuynia cordata is an herbal plant distributed throughout Asia. H. cordata has many bioactive properties, including antibacterial properties. The antibacterial effects of H. cordata on S. mutans remain unknown. Therefore, we treated S. mutans with 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, or 40 mg/mL H. cordata extract at 37°C for 24 h. AIM: The present study evaluated the capacity of three species of Fusarium isolated from onychomycosis to form biofilms and the antibiofilm effect of propolis extract on these biofilms.
MATERIALS & METHODS: The biofilms and antibiofilm effects were evaluated by quantifying the colony-forming units, mitochondrial metabolic activity assays, total biomass by crystal violet staining and scanning electron microscopy.
RESULTS: Propolis extract demonstrated significant antibiofilm efficiency on Fusarium spp. isolates and reduced F. solani, F. oxysporum and F. subglutinans mature biofilms.
