Auditory fear conditioning with tone bursts followed by electric leg stimulation activates neurons not only in the auditory and somatosensory systems but also in many other regions of the brain and elicits shifts in the best frequencies (BFs) of collicular and cortical neurons, i.e., reorganization of the frequency (co-chleotopic) maps in the inferior colliculus and auditory cortex (AC). What are the neural elements minimally necessary for evoking long-term cortical BF shifts? We found that: (i) both electric stimulation and acetylcholine applied to the AC evoke the long-term cortical BF shift…

In the article is summarized the experience of treatment of 15 patients with dysplastic lumbar scoliosis of the II and III degree by the method of electrostimulation of dorsal muscles by means of walking corrector. Stimulation of the given type has been employed as rehabilitation therapy after carrying out of the closed chemonucleolysis for the purpose of muscle jacket restoration. Stimulation of trunk muscles in walking allowed to increase correction and stability of vertebral column distortion. Dynamic observations of patients demonstrated stability of achieved curative effect. Therapy of de

A bilateral reflex contraction of the tensor tympani muscle has been obtained in man by electric stimulation of the tongue (1-2 mA). The stimulus is well tolerated and always effective. The advantage is stressed of eliciting a contraction of this muscle without involvement of the stapedius, as occurs with other methods. An analysis has been subsequently conducted in normal subjects and in patients affected by pathology of the tympano-ossicular system: tympanosclerosis, otosclerosis, suprastapedial facial paralysis; in cases of interruption of the afferent arch: section of the homo-lateral ling…

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a heterogeneous group of pathologies affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the jaw muscles, or both. Epidemiological studies of TMD reveal a prevalence of 82% in the general population with 48% of them presenting with clinical features of muscle tenderness and difficulty in mouth opening. TMD are considered to be the most common orofacial pain conditions of nondental origin.
METHODS: The patients with TMD were randomly divided into two groups, A and B, based on their VAS scale. Group A consists of two subgroups 1 and 2 each consistin

PURPOSE: Extraocular electrical stimulation is known to provide neuroprotection for retinal cells in retinal and optic nerve diseases. Currently, the treatment approach requires patients to set up extraocular electrodes and stimulate potentially weekly due to the lack of an implantable stimulation device. Hence, a minimally-invasive implant was developed to provide chronic electrical stimulation to the retina, potentially improving patient compliance for long-term use. The aim of the present study was to determine the surgical and stimulation safety of this novel device designed for neuroprote

Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (TES) is a promising tool for treating many neurological disorders, but it classically results in diffused stimulation. Many optimization algorithms have been proposed for focusing TES, commonly by creating multi-electrode arrangements and choosing current amplitudes such that the resulting current fields in the brain are focused in the target region, and are as small as possible outside the target region. Consequently, it is likely that such optimization does not harness the non-linear nature of neural dynamics, particularly their thresholding phenomenon, i

OBJECTIVE: The performance of neuroprostheses, including cochlear and retinal implants, is currently constrained by the spatial resolution of electrical stimulation. Optogenetics has improved the spatial control of neurons in vivo but lacks the fast-temporal dynamics required for auditory and retinal signalling. The objective of this study is to demonstrate that combining optical and electrical stimulation in vitro could address some of the limitations associated with each of the stimulus modes when used independently.
APPROACH: The response of murine auditory neurons expressing ChR2-H134 to

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and peripheral nerve electrical stimulation (PES) can change corticospinal excitability. tDCS can be used to non-invasively modulate the cerebral cortex's excitability by applying weak current to an electrode attached to the head, and the effect varies with the electrode's polarity. Previous studies have reported the effect of combined tDCS and PES on corticospinal excitability; when compared to single stimulation, combined stimulation increases cortical excitability. In contrast, another study reported that the effect of tDCS is attenuated by PES

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to determine whether repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) combined with neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) effectively ameliorates dysphagia and how rTMS protocols (bilateral vs. unilateral) combined with NMES can be optimized.
METHODS: Sixty-four patients were randomly divided into four groups using a random distribution table: the sham rTMS plus NMES (Sham-rTMS/NMES), ipsilesional 10-Hz rTMS plus NMES (Ipsi-rTMS/NMES), contralesional 1-Hz rTMS plus NMES (Contra-rTMS/NMES), and bilateral rTMS plus NMES (Bi-rTMS/NMES) groups. We present a low-frequency stimulation method via multi-pad electrodes for delaying muscle fatigue. We compared two protocols for muscle activation of the quadriceps in paraplegics. One protocol involved a large cathode at 30 HZ (HPR, high pulse-rate), and the other involved four smaller cathodes at 16 HZ (LPR, low pulse-rate). The treatment included 30-min daily sessions for 20 days. One leg was treated with the HPR protocol and the other with the LPR protocol. Knee-joint torque was measured before and after therapy to assess the time interval before the knee-joint torque decreased to 70% of

This work presents the application of a rehabilitation protocol using a novel Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation (NIBS) technique, called cerebrospinal Direct Current Stimulation (csDCS), together with the use of a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) based on Motor Imagery (MI) with Neurofeedback (NFB), and applying Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) plus the use of a pedal exerciser. This protocol uses the concept of Alternating Treatment Design (ATD), in which a chronic post-stroke subject is submitted to these techniques to recover his left hand and leg movements. The rehabilitation progress wa

OBJECTIVE: An intact cochlear nerve is necessary for successful cochlear implantation (CI). Although the promontory stimulation test (PST) using a promontory stimulator (PS) and a transtympanic needle electrode is invasive, it is still commonly used to verify cochlear nerve function. PSs are currently unavailable because they are no longer manufactured; however, considering that PST continues to be beneficial in certain situations, alternative equipment is needed. The PNS-7000® (PNS) was developed as a neurologic instrument for stimulating the peripheral nerves. This study investigated the use

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence of crosstalk between organs. The neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is a peripheral chemical synapse whose function and morphology are sensitive to acetylcholine (ACh) release and muscle depolarization. In an attempt to improve our understanding of NMJ plasticity and muscle crosstalk, the effects of unilateral direct electrical stimulation of a hindlimb muscle on the NMJ were investigated in rats exposed long-term post-synaptic neuromuscular blockade.
METHODS: Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to post-synaptic blockade of neuromuscular transmission by syste

AIM: To compare the effects of transvaginal electrical stimulation (ES) and posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) in the treatment of overactive bladder syndrome (OAB).
METHODS: Women applying with symptoms of urgency, frequency, and nocturia with or without incontinence and diagnosed with OAB were divided into an ES or PTNS group. Bladder diary, urodynamics, 1-hour pad test, and King's Health Questionnaire were performed before and after treatment. ES was applied for 20 min, 6-8 weeks with pulses of 10-50 Hz square waves at a 300-µs or 1-ms pulse duration and a maximal output current of
