Serum metabolomics of Bama miniature pigs bitten by Bungarus multicinctus.

Bungarus multicinctus is one of the top ten venomous snakes in China, and its bite causes acute and severe diseases, but its pathophysiology remains poorly elucidated. Thus, an animal model of Bungarus multicinctus bite was established by intramuscular injection of 30μg/kg of Bungarus multicinctus venom, and then the serum metabolites were subsequently screened, identified and validated by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight-mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) methods to explore the potential biomakers and possible metabolic pathways. Untargeted metabolomics analysi

A general protocol of ultra-high resolution MR angiography to image the cerebro-vasculature in 6 different rats strains at high field.

BACKGROUND: Differences in the cerebro-vasculature among strains as well as individual animals might explain variability in animal models and thus, a non-invasive method tailored to image cerebral vessel of interest with high signal to noise ratio is required. NEW METHOD: Experimentally, we describe a new general protocol of three-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography to visualize non-invasively the cerebral vasculature in 6 different rat strains. Flow compensated angiograms of Sprague Dawley, Wistar Kyoto, Lister Hooded, Long Evans, Fisher 344 and Spontaneous Hypertensive

Prevalence of Staphylococcus Species Colonization in Healthy and Sick Cats.

Staphylococcus is one of the most frequently isolated genera of opportunistic bacteria in animals and human beings. Staphylococci in mammals mostly inhabit the skin and mucous membranes. The objectives of the study were to investigate the distribution of staphylococcal species in healthy and sick cats in order to find diagnostic markers. The risk factors associated with colonization were also explored. Isolates from healthy (n=520) and sick cats (n=67) were identified at the species level using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Swabs f

Leptospirosis-persistence of a dilemma: an overview with particular emphasis on trends and recent advances in vaccines and vaccination strategies.

Leptospirosis, caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira, affects both humans and animals and is among the most common but neglected direct zoonotic disease in the world, particularly in untreated or undiagnosed animals as well as humans. Now, it has been considered as a re-emerging disease causing global health problem due to its increasing incidences in developing as well as developed nations. It is a multisystemic disease leading to death. Diagnostic tests of importance are Latex Agglutination Test (LAT), lateral flow and immunoglobulin M (IgM) based ELISA, PCR based assays,

Scientific rotoscoping: a morphology-based method of 3-D motion analysis and visualization.

Three-dimensional skeletal movement is often impossible to accurately quantify from external markers. X-ray imaging more directly visualizes moving bones, but extracting 3-D kinematic data is notoriously difficult from a single perspective. Stereophotogrammetry is extremely powerful if bi-planar fluoroscopy is available, yet implantation of three radio-opaque markers in each segment of interest may be impractical. Herein we introduce scientific rotoscoping (SR), a new method of motion analysis that uses articulated bone models to simultaneously animate and quantify moving skeletons without mar

The activity of the Arabidopsis bifunctional lysine-ketoglutarate reductase/saccharopine dehydrogenase enzyme of lysine catabolism is regulated by functional interaction between its two enzyme domains.

Lysine-ketoglutarate reductase/saccharopine dehydrogenase (LKR/SDH) is a bifunctional enzyme catalyzing the first two steps of lysine catabolism in animals and plants. To elucidate the biochemical signification of the linkage between the two enzymes of LKR/SDH, namely lysine ketoglutarate and saccharopine dehydrogenase, we employed various truncated and mutated Arabidopsis LKR/SDH polypeptides expressed in yeast. Activity analyses of the different recombinant polypeptides under conditions of varying NaCl levels implied that LKR, but not SDH activity, is regulated by functional interaction betw

Metal ions from S-PRG filler have the potential to prevent periodontal disease.

The surface pre-reacted glass ionomer (S-PRG) filler, a component of composite resin, is capable of releasing metal ions that possess antibacterial activity against caries and periodontal pathogens. Although S-PRG has been suggested to be involved in oral disease prevention, no reports have been published regarding its preventive effect on periodontal disease in vivo. The present study investigated whether the eluate from S-PRG (S-PRG eluate) has a suppressive effect on tissue destruction induced in a mouse model of ligature-induced periodontal disease. Twenty-seven C57BL/6 mice were divided i

A new biologging approach reveals unique flightless molt strategies of Atlantic puffins.

Animal-borne telemetry devices provide essential insights into the life-history strategies of far-ranging species and allow us to understand how they interact with their environment. Many species in the seabird family Alcidae undergo a synchronous molt of all primary flight feathers during the non-breeding season, making them flightless and more susceptible to environmental stressors, including severe storms and prey shortages. However, the timing and location of molt remain largely unknown, with most information coming from studies on birds killed by storms or shot by hunters for food. Using

The ovipositor cue indole inhibits animal host attraction in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes are responsible for disease transmission worldwide. They possess the ability to discriminate between different ecological resources, including nectar sources, animal hosts and oviposition sites, a feature mediated by their olfactory system. Insect repellents, such as N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (also called DEET), have been shown to activate and inhibit mosquito odorant receptors, resulting in behavioral modulation. This and other repellents currently available for personal protection against mosquitoes are topically applied to the skin and operate at a short range. In ou

Lévy-like movement patterns of metastatic cancer cells revealed in microfabricated systems and implicated in vivo.

Metastatic cancer cells differ from their non-metastatic counterparts not only in terms of molecular composition and genetics, but also by the very strategy they employ for locomotion. Here, we analyzed large-scale statistics for cells migrating on linear microtracks to show that metastatic cancer cells follow a qualitatively different movement strategy than their non-invasive counterparts. The trajectories of metastatic cells display clusters of small steps that are interspersed with long "flights". Such movements are characterized by heavy-tailed, truncated power law distributions of persist

Application testing of a new three-dimensional acceleration measuring system with wireless data transfer (WAS) for behavior analysis.

A wireless acceleration measurement system was applied to free-moving cows and horses. Sensors were available as a collar and a flat box for measuring leg or trunk movements. Results were transmitted simultaneously by radio or stored in an 8-MB internal memory. As analytical procedures, frequency distributions with standard deviations, spectral analyses, and fractal analyses were applied. Bymeans of the collar sensor, basic behavior patterns (standing, grazing, walking, ruminating, drinking, and hay uptake) could be identified in cows. Lameness could be detected in cows and horses by means of

Optogenetic Analysis of Behavior in the Mosquito Aedes aegypti.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is an important vector of viral pathogens and serves as a model for other vector species. Pathogens are transmitted when a mosquito bites a host animal, but the neural circuits that control seeking and biting behavior are not known. Here, we detail methods and protocols for the manipulation of neural activity in the mosquito using optogenetics, a key technique to determine the causal relationship between neural circuits and behavior. These methods include rearing mosquitoes for optogenetics and three assays that are designed to measure different steps in the sequence

A Deep Learning Framework for Real-Time Bird Detection and Its Implications for Reducing Bird Strike Incidents.

Bird strikes are a substantial aviation safety issue that can result in serious harm to aircraft components and even passenger deaths. In response to this increased tendency, the implementation of new and more efficient detection and prevention technologies becomes urgent. The paper presents a novel deep learning model which is developed to detect and alleviate bird strike issues in airport conditions boosting aircraft safety. Based on an extensive database of bird images having different species and flight patterns, the research adopts sophisticated image augmentation techniques which generat

Convergent evolution of a mobile bony tongue in flighted dinosaurs and pterosaurs.

The tongue, with fleshy, muscular, and bony components, is an innovation of the earliest land-dwelling vertebrates with key functions in both feeding and respiration. Here, we bring together evidence from preserved hyoid elements from dinosaurs and outgroup archosaurs, including pterosaurs, with enhanced contrast x-ray computed tomography data from extant taxa. Midline ossification is a key component of the origin of an avian hyoid. The elaboration of the avian tongue includes the evolution of multiple novel midline hyoid bones and a larynx suspended caudal to these midline elements. While var

Dispersal of Triatoma infestans and other Triatominae species in the arid Chaco of Argentina: flying, walking or passive carriage? The importance of walking females.

The aim of this paper was to analyse the active dispersal of Triatoma infestans and the role of chickens as passive carriers of this insect in peridomestic areas of La Rioja, Argentina. To measure active dispersal, monthly catches were made on six consecutive nights for five months (in the warm season) using light traps (for flying insects) and sticky dispersal barriers (for walking insects). The nutritional and reproductive states of adults were evaluated. Over the course of the sampling period, a total of eight flying adults, six walking nymphs and 10 walking adults of the species T. infesta

Benzoquinones from millipedes deter mosquitoes and elicit self-anointing in capuchin monkeys (Cebus spp.).

Neotropical monkeys of the genus Cebus anoint themselves by rubbing arthropods and plants against their pelage. A recent study has shown that free-ranging wedge-capped capuchin monkeys (C. olivaceus) in Venezuela self-anoint with a benzoquinone-secreting millipede, an activity by which they are hypothesized to appropriate chemical deterrents of mosquitoes. To evaluate the plausibility of this hypothesis, female yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) were presented with two millipede secretory compounds, 2-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone and 2-methoxy-3-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone, on nylon-reinforced sil

Migratory birds and spread of West Nile virus in the Western Hemisphere.

West Nile virus, an Old World flavivirus related to St. Louis encephalitis virus, was first recorded in the New World during August 1999 in the borough of Queens, New York City. Through October 1999, 62 patients, 7 of whom died, had confirmed infections with the virus. Ornithophilic mosquitoes are the principal vectors of West Nile virus in the Old World, and birds of several species, chiefly migrants, appear to be the major introductory or amplifying hosts. If transovarial transmission or survival in overwintering mosquitoes were the principal means for its persistence, West Nile virus might

Gene expression in rat vestibular and reticular structures during and after space flight.

Space flight produces profound changes of neuronal activity in the mammalian vestibular and reticular systems, affecting postural and motor functions. These changes are compensated over time by plastic alterations in the brain. Immediate early genes (IEGs) are useful indicators of both activity changes and neuronal plasticity. We studied the expression of two IEG protein products [Fos and Fos-related antigens (FRAs)] with different cell persistence times (hours and days, respectively) to identify brainstem vestibular and reticular structures involved in adaptation to microgravity and readaptat

Space radiation health risks to hematopoietic, neural, and gastrointestinal systems in astronauts.

The rapid progress in global deep space exploration presents astronauts with a complex space radiation environment that substantially exceeds that of near-Earth orbit. Space radiation primarily consists of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and solar particle events (SPEs), which exhibit strong penetrative capability and considerable biological damaging potential. These factors may induce persistent oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA double-strand breaks, and repair pathway challenges. This review examines the impacts of space radiation on the hematopoietic, neural, and gastrointestinal
