Unprecedented Combination of Rare Degenerative Pathologies in an Octogenarian Ex-Football Player.

A 79-year-old former professional football player presented with language deficits and cognitive changes. A year later, he had difficulty completing sentences, and 3 years after onset, was reduced to one-word answers. He developed severe apathy and agitation, and became more impulsive. He eventually became mute and had difficulty with walking and balance. The patient had mild repetitive head injury while playing football and three concussions. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed left > right frontotemporal atrophy. Duration of illness was 6 years. Neuropathology revealed an unexpected number a…

Women football observers' experiences: a perspective from system justification and glass ceiling.

INTRODUCTION: The legitimization theory of the system explains that despite people's inherent drive towards personal and group interests, they tend to support social systems. Understanding the sources of social pressure and the glass ceiling perceptions of female football observers is the main aim of this study in terms of examining attitudes within the legitimized system. To this end, the study sought to answer how female football observers are constructed in a marginalized position within the male-dominated football culture through sources of social pressure, and how they accommodate the acc…

Addressing head injury risk in youth football: are heading guidelines the answer?

BACKGROUND: Recent findings of neurodegenerative pathology in former professional football players have once again called into question the role that "heading", a fundamental aspect of the game, plays in the onset of neurological disease. By introducing guidelines aimed at limiting heading among youth players, the United Kingdom recently joined the United States as the only two nations yet to implement heading regulation in response to growing concerns surrounding football's head injury burden. PURPOSE: Evaluating the efficacy of risk mitigation strategies requires the continual reviewal of a…

Subconcussive head impact exposure between drill intensities in U.S. high school football.

USA Football established five levels-of-contact to guide the intensity of high school football practices. The objective of this study was to examine head impact frequency and magnitude by levels-of-contact to determine which drills had the greatest head impact exposure. Our primary hypothesis was that there would be an incremental increase in season-long head impact exposure between levels-of-contact: air<bags<control<thud<live. This observational study included 24 high-school football players during all 46 practices, 1 scrimmage, 9 junior varsity and 10 varsity games in the 2019 season. Playe…
