A rigid one-piece PMMA anterior chamber lens (Scharf type) had to be removed 30 years after implantation because of diffuse bullous keratopathy and painful secondary glaucoma. Scanning electron microscopy showed the IOL to have a crater-like surface, while the haptics, having been in contact with intraocular tissues, were superficially and deeply eroded. Comparison with two identical anterior chamber lenses which had not been implanted revealed that the changes seen in the removed IOL must have been the result of degradation of the PMMA material.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of varying the powder/liquid ratio on the physical properties and the degree and rate of curing of C&B Metabond cement. The powder/liquid ratios evaluated had no effect on the tensile bond strength of Rexillium III to etched enamel or on the retention of cemented full cast crowns. The higher P/L ratio resulted in an increased vertical displacement of the cemented crowns. The rate of monomer conversion and the total conversion were not affected significantly by the different P/L ratios.

Following extracapsular senile cataract extraction, visual thresholds were measured in 15 aphakic eyes corrected with glasses and compared with an appropriately matched group of 23 eyes with poly (methyl methacrylate) posterior chamber lenses. All subjects were six months to three years postoperative and had 20/30 or better visual acuity. The paramacular dark adapted threshold, the foveal luminance threshold, and the glare effect on both thresholds were not significantly different in the two groups despite the optical differences between aphakic and pseudophakic correction.

This paper describes the clinicopathologic findings in 38 eyes that were surgically enucleated or eviscerated after cataract extraction with implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). Endophthalmitis and/or complications of wound healing accounted for loss of the eye in 29 cases. Eight of the 38 eyes had complications of IOL insertion that necessitated multiple surgical procedures. These procedures were the removal of an IOL, the secondary insertion of an IOL, and penetrating keratoplasty. Two cases of endophthalmitis were the result of contamination of the solution used to sterilize the lens.
