Methodological aspects of design, analysis and reporting of studies with work participation as an outcome domain in patients with inflammatory arthritis: results of two systematic literature reviews informing EULAR points to consider.

OBJECTIVE: To summarise the methodological aspects in studies with work participation (WP) as outcome domain in inflammatory arthritis (IA) and other chronic diseases. METHODS: Two systematic literature reviews (SLRs) were conducted in key electronic databases (2014-2019): search 1 focused on longitudinal prospective studies in IA and search 2 on SLRs in other chronic diseases. Two reviewers independently identified eligible studies and extracted data covering pre-defined methodological areas. RESULTS: In total, 58 studies in IA (22 randomised controlled trials, 36 longitudinal observational

Cervical sympathectomy to treat cerebral vasospasm: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND/IMPORTANCE: Delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) is the second-leading cause of death and disability in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), and is associated with cerebral arterial vasospasm (CAV). Current treatments for CAV are expensive, invasive, and have limited efficacy. Cervical sympathetic block (CSB) is an underappreciated, but potentially highly effective therapy for CAV. OBJECTIVE: To provide a comprehensive review of the preclinical and human literature pertinent to CSB in the context of CAV. EVIDENCE REVIEW: This study followed Preferred Reporting Items

Neighbourhood Walkability and Risk of Diabetes: Causal Relationship or Epidemiologic Association?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We aim to evaluate whether the current literature supports (i) a causal relationship between neighbourhood walkability and risk of diabetes or instead (ii) a strictly epidemiologic association. RECENT FINDINGS: Both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have reported that neighbourhoods that are scored as having higher levels of walkability have lower rates of prevalent and incident diabetes, respectively. However, other studies have been inconclusive, with more nuanced findings suggesting that this association may be limited to particular demographic groups defined by a

Convalescent Plasma Therapy and Its Effects On COVID-19 Patient Outcomes: A Systematic Review of Current Literature.

Started in late 2019, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly turned into a global pandemic. Considering there is no proven therapy for COVID-19 infection, there is a need to propose potential treatment options. The use of convalescent plasma is one such option as convalescent plasma has previously been used for treating outbreaks of Ebola, influenza, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and severe acute respiratory (SAR) viruses. Therefore, we carried out an early systematic review to evaluate the efficacy of convalescent plasma (CP) therapy and its effects on COVI

Evidence-based review on temporomandibular disorders among musicians.

BACKGROUND: Playing a musical instrument that loads the masticatory system has frequently been linked to temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Previous literature reviews on this topic do not conform to the current standards of evidence-based medicine. AIMS: To investigate the effects of playing a musical instrument (i.e. violin/viola and wind instruments) or singing on the presence of TMDs, based on evidence derived from observational studies. METHODS: Databases of Medline, Web of Science and Google Scholar were searched using MeSH and other relevant terms. For each study, a quality assessmen

Age-related macular degeneration and cardiovascular disease in US population: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: As far as we know, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has become one of the predominant causes of visual impairments. Previous studies have revealed that AMD and many cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) share the same pathologic and genotypic factors, making the connection between AMD and CVD a hot topic. However, the conclusions of the available studies on the relationship between them are somewhat divergent. METHODS: We screened 5523 eligible participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2005 through 2008 for an observational clinic

Characteristics, prognostic determinants of monocytes, macrophages and T cells in acute coronary syndrome: protocol for a multicenter, prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Acute coronary syndrome(ACS) is the leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide. Immune response has been confirmed to play a vital role in the occurrence and development of ACS. The objective of this prospective, multicenter, observational study is to define immune response and their relationship to the occurrence and progressive of ACS. METHODS: This is a multicenter, prospective, observational longitudinal cohort study. The primary outcome is the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) including in-stent restenosis, severe ventricular arrhythmia, heart f

Clinical study protocol for a low-interventional study in intermediate age-related macular degeneration developing novel clinical endpoints for interventional clinical trials with a regulatory and patient access intention-MACUSTAR.

BACKGROUND: There is an unmet need for treatment options in intermediate age-related macular degeneration (iAMD). However, for any new interventions to be tested in clinical trials, novel currently unavailable clinical endpoints need to be developed. Thus, the MACUSTAR study aims to develop and evaluate functional, structural, and patient-reported candidate endpoints for use in future iAMD trials. METHODS: The protocol describes a low-interventional clinical multicenter study employing a novel two-part design. The cross-sectional part (total duration, 1 month) and the longitudinal part (total

Robot-assisted versus manual percutaneous vascular interventions across vascular territories: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Robot-assisted percutaneous vascular intervention (R-PVI) has expanded beyond coronary procedures, but previous reviews were largely coronary-focused and observational. Recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) warrant broader reassessment of R-PVI versus manual percutaneous vascular intervention (M-PVI) across vascular territories. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from database inception to January 31, 2026, following PRISMA guidelines. RCTs and observational studies including ≥10 adult patients in total were eligible. Compa

Prevalence of and recommendation for measuring chronic postsurgical pain in children: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: According to the prior 2017 review (Rabbitts et al), approximately 20% of children and adolescents develop chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP; ie, pain persisting >3 months after surgery) after major surgeries, which is associated with adverse functional and psychological consequences. A major barrier was that definitions of CPSP applied were highly variable. Since that prior review was conducted (n=4 studies in meta-analysis), numerous relevant studies have been published warranting an update. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this current review were to: (1) provide an updated prevalence esti

Vitamin D and Atopic Dermatitis-A Mere Correlation or a Real Supportive Treatment Option?

Atopic dermatitis (AD), a common chronic inflammatory disease in children and adults, is often studied to find the best way to prevent or reduce its severity. One of the substances tested so far is vitamin D. The main aim of this paper was to determine whether vitamin D truly brings benefits to people with AD or whether its action is too insignificant to have clinical significance. The review covered articles-observational studies, several animal studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs)-available in the PubMed database and published after 2019. Full-text manuscripts in English were used

Cutaneous non-volar melanoma dermoscopy and histopathology correlation: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Dermoscopy has a proved validity in the diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma, which is one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer. Although some studies have demonstrated a relationship between specific dermoscopic and pathologic melanoma features, there is no solid evidence allowing reliable conclusions. This study will evaluate the evidence regarding this association. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Observational studies eligible for our systematic review will enrol adults with histological cutaneous non-volar melanoma diagnosis and with dermoscopy image analysis. We will search the fol

Breast cancer determinants in low- to upper-middle-income countries: an umbrella review of meta-analyses of observational studies and an urgent call for implementation science.

INTRODUCTION: Meta-analyses on breast cancer determinants in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including upper-middle-income countries (UMICs), often produce fragmented, context-specific findings. This umbrella review provides a consolidated synthesis to identify consistent risk factors and strengthen the evidence base for guiding targeted public health strategies. METHODS AND MATERIALS: In accordance with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, we conducted a systematic search for meta-analyses across multiple databases. Effect of Paracetamol on Blood Pressure: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Paracetamol is widely used as a first-line analgesic for chronic pain, primarily due to its presumed safety profile. Unlike non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), paracetamol has been for long time considered free of significant cardiovascular effects, particularly on blood pressure (BP). However, emerging evidence suggests that long terme paracetamol use may be associated with elevated BP, challenging its status as a risk-free alternative to NSAIDs. This systematic review aimed to investigate the association between paracetamol intake and changes in BP by screening existi

Moderate Secondary Mitral Regurgitation: Evolving Evidence and Management Strategies.

Secondary mitral regurgitation (SMR) is common in patients with heart failure (HF). Although randomized clinical trials have been focused on the treatment of severe SMR, the prognostic role and potential for treatment of moderate SMR cannot be overlooked. The randomized RESHAPE-HF2 trial included patients with moderate and severe SMR with consistent findings in both groups, raising the hypothesis that transcatheter correction of moderate SMR could have beneficial effects, although this needs further investigation. The aim of this review is to describe the prevalence of moderate SMR in patients

Using Causal Inference to Estimate the Effect of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV Prevention on COVID-19 Mortality.

Traditional machine learning (ML) approaches learn to recognize patterns in the data but fail to go beyond observing associations. Such data-driven methods can lack generalizability when the data is outside the independent and identically distributed (i.i.d) setting. Using causal inference can aid data-driven techniques to go beyond learning spurious associations and frame the data-generating process in a causal lens. We can combine domain expertise and traditional ML techniques to answer causal questions on the data. In this paper, we estimate the causal effect of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (Pr

Risk and protective factors for cannabis, cocaine, and opioid use disorders: An umbrella review of meta-analyses of observational studies.

Several meta-analyses of observational studies have addressed the association between risk and protective factors and cannabis/cocaine/opioid use disorders, but results are conflicting. No umbrella review has ever graded the credibility of this evidence (not significant/weak/suggestive/highly suggestive/convincing). We searched Pubmed-MEDLINE/PsycInfo, last search September 21, 2020. We assessed the quality of meta-analyses with the AMSTAR-2 tool. Out of 3,072 initial references, five were included, providing 19 associations between 12 putative risk/protective factors and cannabis/cocaine/opio
