Early childhood deprivation and the impact of negative life events on mental health in later life: a test of the stress sensitization hypothesis.

INTRODUCTION: Early life exposure to adversity and stress has been shown to sensitize young people to later negative life events (LEs), leading to increased susceptibility to mental health problems. We explored this question by testing whether exposure to severe institutional deprivation moderated the effect of adolescent exposure to LE on early adult depression and anxiety. To test the specificity of these effects, we contrasted the effects on these outcomes with neuro-developmental problems (autism and disinhibited social engagement), known from previous studies to be associated with depriva

Examining Whether Risk Factors Influence Student Perceptions of Campus Sexual Violence.

The present study examined university students' perceptions of a campus sexual violence scenario, and specifically determined whether the presence of known risk factors for sexual perpetration would influence their views of an individual who caused harm. Two hundred and seventy-five student participants read a vignette that either included the present or absence of the following three risk factors: Frequent alcohol use, attitudes supportive of rape, and negative peer influence. The findings indicated that the risk factors did not have a significant relationship with students' risk perceptions,…

Socialization, personality development, and the child's environments: comment on Vandell (2000).

Although many socialization agents influence children's behavior (D. L. Vandell, 2000), the evidence (e.g., from intervention studies) indicates that each exerts its influence only within its own domain. Context effects and genetic effects are among the confounding factors that make it impossible, given current data, to reject the null hypothesis of zero long-term effects of parenting on child outcomes. Problems with the prevailing view of development cannot be solved by invoking within-home environmental differences or gene- environment interactions. Group socialization theory can account for

Who Will Be My Friend? The Role of the Liking Gap in Preschooler Friend Selection.

Friend selection is a crucial aspect of social development, particularly during preschool years. This study investigated the role of the liking gap in shaping preschoolers' friend selection mechanisms through two experiments. In Experiment 1 (N = 120), a liking gap task was used to examine whether preschoolers perceive a discrepancy between how much they like familiar friends and how much they believe those friends like them in return. The results indicated that preschoolers tend to assume that their most liked peers evaluate them less positively than they do in return, whereas they believe th

"Be more positive and more kind to your own bodies": Adolescent and young adult preferences for how parents can support their children with weight-related pressures.

Body dissatisfaction is a key factor contributing to the development of disordered eating, and body dissatisfaction is often influenced by media, peer, and parental pressures during adolescence. Little research has explored ways in which parents can help their children manage pressures from social media and their peers. The present study used the MyVoice National Poll of Youth, a large text-message cohort of young people (14-24 years old) in the United States, to collect and examine qualitative data about their experiences with parental weight-related communication and how they think parents c

The experience of living after ECT: a qualitative meta-synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a controversial treatment. Research has predominantly focused on clinician assessment of short-term efficacy and, occasionally, on participant experiences of the treatment itself. While service user accounts of the long-term impacts of ECT are reported, they are dispersed throughout the literature and typically tangential to studie's main foci. AIM: The aim of this study was to synthesise service-user accounts, within peer-reviewed literature, of long-term impacts of ECT in their daily lives. METHODS: A qualitative meta-synthesis was conducted.

Social contagion of ethnic hostility.

Interethnic conflicts often escalate rapidly. Why does the behavior of masses easily change from cooperation to aggression? This paper provides an experimental test of whether ethnic hostility is contagious. Using incentivized tasks, we measured willingness to sacrifice one's own resources to harm others among adolescents from a region with a history of animosities toward the Roma people, the largest ethnic minority in Europe. To identify the influence of peers, subjects made choices after observing either destructive or peaceful behavior of peers in the same task. We found that susceptibility

Implementation determinants of risk-stratified gestational diabetes mellitus screening in community-based women's peer groups in rural western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) contributes to maternal and neonatal complications and is a growing concern in Kenya. The 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is recommended to diagnose GDM between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, but uptake remains low in settings experiencing financial and structural barriers to health care access. The Stratification Risk of Diabetes in Early pregnancy (STRiDE) tool is a risk-prediction model designed to identify women at elevated risk for GDM. The STRiDE-GDM screening approach integrates this tool within community-based peer groups to guid

Effectiveness of peer counselling in addressing psychological distress and exposure to violence among sexual and gender minorities in Nepal: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The burden of social stressors (discrimination, prejudice, violence, and stigmatization) is disproportionately high among LGBTIQA + (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer and Asexual) individuals. These stressors negatively influence the overall well-being of this population which in turn affects their health-seeking behaviours, including the disclosure of psychosocial concerns to health workers. Peer-led mental health interventions have therefore been identified as a potentially suitable and acceptable approach for this population. This protocol presents the SAATHI

Social Buffering is Dependent on Mutual Experience in Adolescent Male Mice Exposed to Social Defeat Stress.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who experience emotional, physical, or sexual abuse as children suffer from higher rates of major depressive disorder, drug abuse, and suicide. Early life interventions such as peer support groups can be beneficial to adolescents who experience trauma, suggesting that social support is important in facilitating rehabilitation and promoting resiliency to stress. Although there are some animal paradigms that can model how peer-peer interactions influence stress-reactivity, less is known about how individual stress experiences influence the effectiveness of social bufferin

Evidence for a vocal signature in the rat and its reinforcing effects: a key role for the subthalamic nucleus.

Although rodents have a well-structured vocal form of communication, like humans and non-human primates, there is, to date, no evidence for a vocal signature in the well-known 50- and 22-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) emitted by rats. Here, we show that rats can recognize the identity of the USV emitter since they choose to preferentially self-administer playback of 50-kHz USVs emitted by a stranger rat over those of their cagemate. In a second experiment, we show that only stranger, but not familiar, 50-kHz USVs reduce cocaine self-administration. Finally, to study the neurobiological su

A learner-driven, longitudinal model for high-value care education: early outcomes from the STARS program.

INTRODUCTION: Attitudes and clinical norms are shaped during medical training. Evidence from high-value care education suggests early exposure influences long-term practice patterns, making it an ideal target for curricula interventions. STARS (Students and Trainees Advocating for Resource Stewardship) is a learner-driven programme developed by Choosing Wisely Canada in 2015 and subsequently adopted in the USA. It exposes medical students to high-value care principles and activates them as change agents. We evaluated perceived sustained influence of the US STARS programme on attitudes, behavio

Disability and self-rated health: Exploring foreign- and U.S.-born differences across adulthood.

There is limited inquiry regarding how immigrant status intersects with disability to influence health across adulthood. As the U.S. population continues to age, especially immigrants, understanding how disability influences health is imperative. Using 2010-2018 National Health Interview Survey data (n = 461,010) and logistic regression models, we investigate how differences in reporting Activity of Daily Living (ADL) disability influence reports of self-rated health (SRH) between foreign- and U.S.-born respondents (ages 25+) by race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic,

Peer substance use and homelessness predicting substance abuse from adolescence through early adulthood.

Adolescents who experience homelessness are at higher risk for abusing substances, and for being exposed to substance-using peers. The current study used a longitudinal design to track substance abuse, affiliation with substance-using peers, and episodes of homelessness among a sample of 223 adolescents who were housed at the baseline data collection and 148 adolescents who were housed at baseline. Participants were interviewed at six waves over 6.5 years, covering an age range from 13 to 25. Many participants experienced a recurrence of homelessness during follow-up, with 64.6 % of the baseli
