On the path to evidence-based therapy in neuromuscular disorders.

Neuromuscular disorders encompass a diverse group of acquired and genetic diseases characterized by loss of motor functionality. Although cu … nal muscular atrophy (SMA), Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disorders, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP), acquired autoimmune myasthenia gravis (MG), and Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), to illustrate the progress made on the path to evidenced-based therapy.

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)-Associated Guillain-Barre' Syndrome: Case Report.

Though the novel corona virus (COVID-19) mostly affects the respiratory system, it can also result in several neurological complications. One of these is Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) and which is rare and only reported from some parts of the world during this pandemic. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy. Patients can present with limb or cranial-nerves weakness, loss of deep tendon reflexes, sensory and dysautonomic symptoms. The main pathophysiology for the clinical presentation is demyelination and/or axonal damage to peripheral nerves or roots. Neuro…

Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP): A Comprehensive Review of Types, Pathophysiology, and Treatment Approaches.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), focusing on its clinical manifestations, pathophysiology, and treatment advancements, with particular emphasis on efgartigimod as a novel therapeutic agent. RECENT FINDINGS: CIDP is a chronic autoimmune disorder caused by demyelination and axonal degeneration, leading to progressive weakness and impaired sensory function. While conventional treatments, including corticosteroids, IVIg, and plasma exchange, provide symptomatic relief, their limitations include sig

A case of Guillain-Barré syndrome developed minimal change nephrotic syndrome simultaneously.

A case who developed Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and nephrotic syndrome (NS) simultaneously is reported. In this case, the onset of nephrotic change of proteinuria coincided with the development of the neurological disturbance. Analysis of renal biopsy by light, immunofluorescent and electron microscopy showed minor glomerular abnormalities. The occurrence of GBS in association with NS is rare, and moreover most cases in the previous reports had membranous nephropathy. Only 1 case had minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS). To our knowledge, this is the first report of a case beneficially

Guillain-Barré syndrome: clinical neurophysiologic studies.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a well-defined clinical entity corresponding to primary inflammatory demyelinating lesions of peripheral nerves and spinal roots in the majority of cases seen in Western Europe and North America. Documentation of conduction abnormalities characteristic of demyelination in the context of rapidly developing weakness confirms the clinical diagnosis of acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy. These abnormalities include (1) conduction block, (2) markedly prolonged distal latencies, (3) marked slowing of motor conduction velocities, and (4) absent or imper…

Meningoencephalitis and polyradiculoneuritis in adults: don't forget rubella.

We describe a severe case of meningoencephalitis and polyradiculoneuritis that occurred following rubella in an otherwise healthy 19-year-old man. The diagnosis was made serologically. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of extensive neurological involvement in an adult with rubella.

Impairment of taste in the Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Involvement of those cranial nerves subserving taste is common in the Guillain-Barré syndrome, yet seldom reported are disturbances of taste. This may reflect relative sparing of taste fibers, which are small thinly myelinated fibers. However, the true incidence of taste disturbances in GBS is probably underestimated since formal taste testing is often not performed, particularly in those cases where patients have been intubated. We observed two patients with GBS and abnormalities of taste. Disturbances of taste are often neglected clinically and the clinical evaluation of taste has been hampe

[Peculiar clinical pictures of Guillain-Barré-Strohl syndrome. Description of 2 clinical cases].

A clinical of 37 patients suffering form Guillain-Baré syndrome has been carried out. Because of their unusual onset and clinical course, two of the cases are reported in full. The first case presented atypical onset modalities characterised by dysarthria, dysphonia and dysphagia with subsequent diplegia of the facial nerve and motor involvement of all four extremities; the second was difficult to diagnose and over time it turned out to be disimmune chronic-recurrent polyneuropathy. The clinic instrumental diagnostic and therapeutic course of this case, which was characterised by the poor resp

Guillain-Barré syndrome associated with acute cytomegalovirus mononucleosis syndrome.

A case of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in a young patient who suffered from an acute cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is presented. The diagnosis was reached following the isolation of the virus from the urine and the demonstration of high titers of both IgM and IgG antibodies in the serum. In contrast to previous cases in which GBS was merely associated with positive serology for CMV, but with almost no clinical manifestations of CMV mononucleosis syndrome, our patient had a full blown picture of acute CMV mononucleosis, including peripheral lymphocytosis, splenomegaly, hepatic involvement an
