Quality appraisal of clinical practice guidelines for the evaluation and management of primary hyperparathyroidism.

PURPOSE: Multiple groups have created clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for the management of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). This report provides a rigorous quality assessment using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation Instrument (AGREE II) to identify high-performing guidelines and areas for improvement. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to isolate CPGs addressing the management of PHPT. Guideline data was extracted and quality ratings were assigned by four independent reviewers. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated to ensure interrater r

Analysis of Movement Variability in Cycling: An Exploratory Study.

The purpose of this study was to determine the test-retest repeatability of Blue Trident inertial measurement units (IMUs) and VICON Nexus kinematic modelling in analysing the Lyapunov Exponent (LyE) during a maximal effort 4000 m cycling bout in different body segments/joints. An additional aim was to determine if changes in the LyE existed across a trial. Twelve novice cyclists completed four sessions of cycling; one was a familiarisation session to determine a bike fit and become better accustomed to the time trial position and pacing of a 4000 m effort. IMUs were attached to the head, thor

Suprachoroidal Delivery in Rats and Guinea Pigs Using a High-Precision Microneedle Injector.

PURPOSE: Methods of injection into the suprachoroidal space (SCS) have been developed for larger animals and humans, but reliable administration to the SCS of rodents remains challenging given their substantially smaller eyes. Here, we developed microneedle (MN)-based injectors for SCS delivery in rats and guinea pigs. METHODS: We optimized key design features, including MN size and tip characteristics, MN hub design, and eye stabilization, to maximize injection reliability. Performance of the injection technique was characterized in rats (n = 13) and guinea pigs (n = 3) in vivo using fundosc

Toward a robust swallowing detection for an implantable active artificial larynx: a survey.

Total laryngectomy consists in the removal of the larynx and is intended as a curative treatment for laryngeal cancer, but it leaves the patient with no possibility to breathe, talk, and swallow normally anymore. A tracheostomy is created to restore breathing through the throat, but the aero-digestive tracts are permanently separated and the air no longer passes through the nasal tracts, which allowed filtration, warming, humidification, olfaction, and acceleration of the air for better tissue oxygenation. As for phonation restoration, various techniques allow the patient to talk again. The ma

Reliability and Validity of the Elkins Hypnotizability Scale within a Clinical Sample.

Hypnotherapy is used in clinical settings to treat mental and physical health-related conditions. Hypnotic response can be measured through hypnotizability scales to help interventionists personalize treatment plans to suit the patients' individualized hypnotic abilities. Examples of these scales are the Elkins Hypnotizability Scale (EHS) and the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C (SHSS:C). According to the previous literature, these scales have good discriminating ability and internal consistency (α = 0.85) in collegiate samples, but the psychometric properties of the EHS for a ta

The bruxism screener (BruxScreen): Development, pilot testing and face validity.

BACKGROUND: To assess awake and sleep bruxism, the Standardised Tool for the Assessment of Bruxism (STAB) is currently being developed. The STAB will be a comprehensive tool for the detailed assessment of bruxism behaviour itself as well as of its possible consequences, causes, and comorbid conditions. OBJECTIVE: Since the STAB cannot fully meet the 'A4 principle' for a bruxism assessment tool, i.e., being Accurate (reliable and valid), Applicable (feasible), Affordable (cost-effective), and Accessible (suitable for everyday clinical use), the Bruxism Screener (BruxScreen) has been developed

The Affect Intolerance Scale (AIS), German version: A validation study in a student and clinical sample of patients with trauma-related disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The Affect Intolerance Scale (AIS) assesses two core concepts of emotion regulation: appraisals of negative emotions as threatening and proneness to emotional avoidance. Maladaptive emotion regulation is associated with various psychopathologies. We translated and validated the AIS in a German student and clinical sample of patients with trauma-related disorders. METHODS: 340 patients, 161 with post-traumatic stress disorder and 179 with adjustment disorder, and 322 students were enrolled. We employed exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses in a cross-validatio

A Scoping Review of the Validity and Reliability of Smartphone Accelerometers When Collecting Kinematic Gait Data.

The aim of this scoping review is to evaluate and summarize the existing literature that considers the validity and/or reliability of smartphone accelerometer applications when compared to 'gold standard' kinematic data collection (for example, motion capture). An electronic keyword search was performed on three databases to identify appropriate research. This research was then examined for details of measures and methodology and general study characteristics to identify related themes. No restrictions were placed on the date of publication, type of smartphone, or participant demographics. In

Development, Factor Structure, and Psychometric Validation of the Impostor Phenomenon Assessment: A Novel Assessment of Impostor Phenomenon.

Despite growing attention surrounding impostor phenomenon (also known as "imposter syndrome"), recent reviews have suggested that current measures may be inadequate in capturing the complex and multifaceted nature of this construct. The objective of the current studies was to clarify the theoretical conceptualization of impostor phenomenon based on experiences in an achievement-oriented setting. We conducted a review of the literature and developed an item pool for a novel impostor phenomenon assessment (IPA) (Study 1). Exploratory factor analyses (Study 1) and confirmatory factor analyses (St

Reliability of non-contact tongue diagnosis for Sjögren's syndrome using machine learning method.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by dry mouth. The cause of SS is unknown, and its diverse symptoms make diagnosis difficult. The Saxon test, an intraoral examination, is used as the primary diagnostic method for SS, however, the risk of salivary infection is problematic. Therefore, we investigate the possibility of diagnosing SS by non-contact and imaging observation of the tongue surface. In this study, we obtained tongue photographs of 60 patients at the Tsurumi University School of Dentistry outpatient clinic to clarify the relationship between the features of

The psychometric properties of positive and negative beliefs about the rumination scale in Chinese undergraduates.

BACKGROUND: Rumination, a transdiagnostic factor in different psychopathological conditions, is believed to be activated and sustained by dysfunctional metacognition. The Positive Beliefs about Rumination Scale (PBRS) and the Negative Beliefs about Rumination Scale (NBRS) have been used to measure the metacognitive beliefs of rumination and have been investigated in many cultural contexts. However, it remains unclear whether these scales can work as well for the Chinese population. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the psychometric properties of the Chinese versions of these scales and to

Electrochemical Determination of Chloroquine Phosphate in Real Samples Using a Diresorcinate-1,10-phenanthrolinecobalt(II)-Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode.

Chloroquine phosphate (CQP) is used for malaria treatment. As it is facing increasing resistance, it needs continuous monitoring using sensitive and specific detection methods. In this work, a voltammetric sensor was prepared by electropolymerization of a diresorcinate-1,10-phenanthrolinecobalt(II) complex on a glassy carbon electrode (poly(DHRPCo)/GCE) which was followingly characterized. Compared with a bare GCE, CQP showed single well shaped irreversible oxidative peak at the poly(DHRPCo)/GCE. The peak current showed excellent linearity with CQP concentration in the range of 0.005-300.0 μm

Aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) as a screening tool for primary aldosteronism (PA).

The aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) is the standard screening test for primary aldosteronism (PA). Because of the poor reproducibility of the ARR, repeat testing is recommended if the result is not compatible with the clinical condition. Various methods to measure renin are used in different hospitals in Taiwan, and the ARR cutoff values also differ among laboratories. The Task Force of Taiwan PA recommend using plasma renin activity (PRA) to calculate ARR instead of direct renin concentration (DRC) unless PRA is unavailable, because PRA is widely used in international guidelines and most stu
