OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study addressed the general hypothesis that abnormalities of the mitral valve apparatus are common in cats with idiopathic hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and contribute to dynamic obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT).
ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: 106 cats (28 controls and 78 with HCM) had transthoracic two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography performed with quantification of 33 variables. Three groups of cats (control [Group-1], HCM without obstruction [Group-2], and HCM with obstruction [Group-3]) were identified and compared by an

Univentricular atrioventricular (AV) connections are rare and complex congenital cardiac anomalies in which both AV valves communicate into a large, common (single) receiving chamber. The common chamber can be of left, right, or mixed ventricular morphology. Although well documented in people, reports of the double-inlet ventricle malformation are rare in the veterinary literature. This report provides description of an Arabian horse with a double-inlet univentricular connection of left ventricular type, a hypoplastic subpulmonary right ventricle, two muscular ventricular septal defects, and a

OBJECTIVE: To determine changes in cardiac troponin I concentration (cTnI) associated with cardiovascular catheterization in dogs.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: cTnI was measured after transarterial coil embolization of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), balloon valvuloplasty (BV), and pacemaker implantation (PACE). Dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy (OHE) were used as a control, with 15 animals in each group. Blood for the cTnI assay was collected at baseline (T0), at 5h (T5), 24h (T24) and 10 days (T240) post-procedure. The effects of age, duration and difficulty of the procedure were evalua

Three dogs presented for the evaluation of cardiac murmurs were diagnosed with aberrant arteriovenous shunts. All cases demonstrated the following findings: 1) relatively soft continuous murmur loudest at the left heart base resembling patent ductus arteriosus (PDA); 2) shunt flow signals in the pulmonary artery on echocardiography; and 3) no PDA on selective angiography, but evidence of anomalous shunting vessels from thoracic aorta to pulmonary vasculature. An aberrant arteriovenous shunt should be considered when a continuous murmur of relatively small intensity is heard.

A 4-year-old, intact male Dogue de Bordeaux dog with congenital valvular pulmonic stenosis, tricuspid valve dysplasia, and chronic atrial fibrillation underwent ultrasound-guided balloon valvuloplasty in addition to pharmacological treatment. Owner compliance to prescribed pharmacotherapy proved very poor, and concerns developed regarding the ability to successfully control heart rate and symptoms using drug therapy alone. These concerns were addressed by the implantation of a novel vagal stimulation system that was programmed to prevent a ventricular rate of >145 bpm. Consequently, post-opera

A 6-month-old German shepherd dog was referred for evaluation of a cardiac murmur. Upon physical examination, the auscultated heart rate was 120 beats/min, and a grade IV/VI systolic heart murmur with a point of maximal intensity over the left heart base radiating up the neck was heard. The standard echocardiographic examination showed subaortic stenosis and an anechoic tubular structure extending from the sinus of Valsalva to the left ventricular posterior wall. Aneurysmal left coronary artery (CA) was confirmed by angiography. The dog was euthanized and post-mortem examination showed severe

A 2.6-year-old duck was evaluated for respiratory difficulty. On the basis of physical, radiographic and echocardiographic findings, a diagnosis of congestive heart failure secondary to congenital mitral stenosis and subvalvular aortic stenosis was made. The duck did not respond well to medical therapy and was euthanized. The diagnosis was confirmed at necropsy.

A Labrador retriever, presented for a routine yearly wellness exam, shows on ECG a normal sinus rhythm with first degree atrioventricular blockade and atrial dissociation (AD). A detailed cardiologic examination was performed including thoracic radiography, echocardiography and blood pressure measurement, all of which were considered normal. The dog described in this current report was re-examined several times over the subsequent 2 years and no clinical signs of heart failure, heart disease or other diseases were recognized, the AD appears to have been benign.

A 5-month-old male domestic cat presented with a history of rapid, heavy breathing and cyanosis after exercise. Physical examination showed an abnormal respiratory pattern with an increased rate and stress-induced cyanosis. Auscultation revealed tachycardia and a grade 5/6 systolic murmur best heard over the left base. Radiographs showed evidence of right atrial and ventricular enlargement with distended pulmonary vessels and an enlarged ascending aorta. An echocardiographic examination revealed a dilated right atrium, eccentric right ventricular hypertrophy and an overriding aorta associated

BACKGROUND: Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) is widely used as a curative therapeutic strategy in human beings with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), but rarely applied in animals. This report describes successful RFCA of atrioventricular accessory pathways (AP) in two dogs with episodic weakness caused by frequent paroxysms of supraventricular tachycardia.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Invasive electrophysiological studies (EPS) identified two APs in the 1st dog (right postero-septal, right posterior), and one in the 2nd dog (right posterior). Programmed electrical stimulation dem

Third degree atrioventricular (AV) block in dogs is thought to be most frequently characterized by non-specific fibrotic changes in the AV node. However, it may occur secondary to an undiagnosed inflammatory process. We report a case of third degree AV block in a dog, secondary to acute lymphocytic-plasmacytic myocarditis that resulted in sudden death. This dog had cardiac troponin I levels of 44.65 ng/mL (normal <0.11 ng/mL). The serum cardiac troponin I level was five times higher than any other AV block patient measured in our laboratory, and was also substantially higher than in dogs with

OBJECTIVES: To characterize angiographic morphology and minimum internal transverse diameter of left-to-right shunting patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in a large series of dogs.
BACKGROUND: PDA is the most common congenital cardiac malformation in the dog. Transarterial ductal occlusion is increasingly performed to close this defect. While accurate assessment of ductal morphology and luminal diameter is important to assure optimal occlusion using catheter-delivered devices, such information is currently limited.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 246 dogs representing 31 breeds with left-to-r

A young, overweight dog presented with sudden onset lethargy and collapse following exercise in warm environmental conditions. Investigations revealed systolic hypotension, multiform ventricular premature complexes, irregular myocardial echogenicity with poor left ventricular systolic function and a markedly elevated troponin cTnI (180ng/mL, reference range <0.3ng/mL) consistent with severe myocyte damage. Infectious causes of myocarditis were ruled out on the basis of serological and polymerase chain reaction blood tests. Exercise-induced malignant hyperthermia was excluded from the history,

The main purpose of this study was to describe electrocardiographic (ECG) changes in canine babesiosis, and to relate these to clinical severity, outcome and cardiac pathology. Four groups of dogs with babesiosis were studied: mild to moderate anemia, severe anemia, concurrent autoagglutination and concurrent complications. Lead II ECG was recorded at admission for 1 minute in all dogs (121). A six lead ECG was recorded in 88 dogs. Full necropsy was performed on 16 dogs (5 died on arrival, 11 had ECG recording). The following ECG changes were recorded in relatively high prevalence: sinoatrial

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) enhances our ability to see the patent ductus arteriosus in the dog. The improved visualization may potentially improve our ability to perform transcatheter coil embolization in patients that are more likely to have a successful outcome. This report uses still and video images to detail the specifics of coil embolization as performed with the assistance of TEE and compares the images with those of angiography, surgery and postmortem examination.

Infectious endocarditis is a systemic disease associated with high morbidity and mortality. Clinical recognition and effective management is challenging, but insights can be gleaned from relevant pathologic features. Risk factors include subaortic stenosis, possibly certain other congenital anomalies, and bacteremia. Auscultation can provide clues regarding valvular involvment, particularly when a diastolic left basilar murmur of aortic valve regurgitation is present. Aortic valve vegetations and insufficiency may also alter femoral arterial pulse characteristics. Echocardiography may facilita

BACKGROUND: Canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is an acquired heart muscle disease of unknown etiology characterized by commonly adult onset of arrhythmias, congestive heart failure(CHF), and sudden death. Myocardial failure associated with myocarditis has been well documented in puppies infected with parvovirus. While a form of DCM has recently been described in juvenile Portuguese Water Dogs it has not been reported in juvenile Doberman pinschers, a breed known for its high prevalence of DCM.
METHODS: We examined 7 Doberman pinscher puppies that were referred for cardiovascular examination

BACKGROUND: : Catheter closure of patent ductus arteriosus Botalli (PDA) is increasingly replacing traditional surgical ligation via thoracotomy. A variety of techniques have been described in dogs, although the technique and implant chosen may depend on the minimum ductus diameter.
OBJECTIVES: : To evaluate the feasibility and treatment of choice of catheter closure of large and small PDAs in dogs.
METHODS: : In 16 dogs with a PDA, catheter closure was performed using transarterial embolisation using detachable or free coils, or transvenously using an Amplatzer, duct occluder (ADO).

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to describe the clinical course of Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) in older canine patients (defined as patients greater than 24 months at the time of presentation) with and without intervention. This study was also undertaken to evaluate if adult dogs with persistent flow across the ductus should still be closed, what the benefits are from late closure, and to hypothesise why some animals still continue to deteriorate despite closure.
BACKGROUND: Currently accepted therapies for patent ductus arteriosus are surgical ligation and transcatheter coil
