Interpersonal problems among patients suffering from panic disorder with agoraphobia before and after treatment.

The aim of this study was to examine interpersonal problems among panic disorder with agoraphobia patients before and after treatment. Patients (N = 46) suffering from panic disorder with moderate or severe agoraphobia and considering agoraphobia as their main problem were randomly assigned to receive either cognitive therapy or guided mastery therapy in a six-week in-patient group programme. The Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP) and various symptom measures were administered at pretreatment and at one-year follow-up. Two IIP subscales were derived from factor analysis of the present d

[Cost-effectiveness analysis of the screening strategies for primary angle closure glaucoma].

PURPOSE: To evaluate varlous primary angle clouse glaucoma(PACG)screening strategies by cost effectiveness analysis for choosing the best screening strategy. METHODS: We designed a model of the process of PACG screening, diagnosis, treatment, and estimated variable parameters of this model through literatures reviewed and the results of our study. Then four screening strategiers which are oblique flashlight test, measurement of axial anterior chamber depth (AACD), examination of peripheral anterior chamber depth (PACD), and combination of oblique flashlight test with examination of PACD in se

The use of two measures of health-related quality of life in HIV-infected individuals: a cross-sectional comparison.

Two measures of health-related quality of life in 65 HIV-infected individuals were compared in a cross-sectional design. The Quality of Well-Being Scale (QWB) results in a single score ranging from death to perfect health. The MOS-HIV Health Survey (MOS-HIV, 34-item version) gives scores in 11 dimensions. The QWB score distinguished subjects with AIDS from those who were asymptomatic (p = 0.027). For the seven multi-item scales of the MOS-HIV, Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.85-0.95, indicating good internal consistency reliability. Clinical HIV-infection status was significantly associated wit

Cost-effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori eradication for the long-term management of duodenal ulcer in Canada.

BACKGROUND: A 1994 National Institutes of Health consensus panel recommended that eradication of Helicobacter pylori should be first-line therapy for persons with duodenal ulcer. OBJECTIVE: To assess the cost-effectiveness of H pylori eradication relative to alternative pharmacologic strategies in the long-term management of persons with confirmed duodenal ulcer. METHODS: Decision analysis model to estimate expected costs and symptomatic ulcer recurrences during a 12-month period for three general treatment strategies: (1) immediate H pylori eradication; (2) H pylori eradication at first ulc

Application of sample survey methods for modelling ratios to incidence densities.

We describe ratio estimation methods for multivariately analysing incidence densities from prospective epidemiologic studies. Commonly used in survey data analysis, these ratio methods require minimal distributional assumptions and take into account the random variability in the at-risk periods. We illustrate their application with data from a study of lower respiratory illness (LRI) in children during the first year of life. One question of interest is whether children with passive exposure to tobacco smoke have a higher rate of LRI, on average, than those with no exposure and in a setting wh

On the relationship between nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy. Italian Group for Antiemetic Research.

In comparative trials on antiemetic efficacy of different regimens, the positive correlation between the probabilities of vomiting and of nausea could hide some confounding effect. Our work seeks to detect such effects. The data from two large studies on prevention of cisplatin-induced emesis were re-analyzed using two multifactorial logistic models. The first study compared ondansetron + dexamethasone (Ond+Dex) with metoclopramide+dexamethasone+diphenhydramine (Mtc+Dex+Dip), the second compared Mtc+Dex+Dip with Mtc+prednisolone. A group of 267 patients in the first study and 343 in the second

"Thucydides syndrome" reconsidered: new thoughts on the "Plague of Athens".

A recently published theory (N Engl J Med 1985;313:1027-30) argues that the famous Athenian epidemic of 430 B.C. was caused by a combination of influenza and toxin-producing staphylococci (the "Thucydides syndrome"). Although it is accepted by some medical authorities, and ostensibly supported by identification of modern cases, the theory's plausibility has not been carefully examined. The authors used an epidemiologic approach supplemented by historical and clinical observations to examine the likelihood that a "Thucydides syndrome" could have caused the Athenian epidemic. Arguing against the

Model for investigating snorers with suspected sleep apnoea.

BACKGROUND: Overnight polysomnography is expensive and time consuming. An approach based on a logistic regression model and overnight pulse oximetry has been developed to determine which of the snorers referred to our sleep laboratory need polysomnography. METHODS: The variables entered in the regression model were derived from questionnaires completed by 95 habitual snorers and 89 patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. The resulting regression equation included weight, height, sex, witnessed episodes of apnoea, and reports of falling asleep when reading. This prediction equation was applied

Relative risk, risk difference and rate difference models for sparse stratified data: a pseudo likelihood approach.

We consider a relative risk and a risk difference model for binomial data, and a rate difference model for Poisson (person year) data. It is assumed that the data are stratified in a large number of small strata. If each stratum has its own parameter in the model, then, due to the large number of parameters, straightforward maximum likelihood leads to inconsistent estimates of the relevant parameters. By contrast to the logistic model, conditioning on the number of events per stratum does not help in eliminating the stratum nuisance parameters. We propose a pseudo likelihood method to overcome

A modeling analysis of young drivers' judgments of accident risk due to alcohol use and other driving conditions.

Male (60) and female (60) college students who were under the legal drinking age completed a personal driving experience questionnaire and judged the probability of an accident occurring in 100 driving scenarios, half involving an intoxicated male driver and half a sober male driver. The scenarios also varied in terms of the safety levels of five other driving factors. Mathematical models derived from the probability judgments permitted measurement of the influence of the various driving factors on perceived risk. The driving factors in order of their influence on the accident probability judg

A statistical method for assessing a threshold in epidemiological studies.

I describe a method for estimating and testing a threshold value in epidemiological studies. A threshold effect indicates an association between a risk factor and a defined outcome above the threshold value but none below it. An important field of application is occupational medicine where, for a lot of chemical compounds and other agents which are non-carcinogenic health hazards, so-called threshold limit values or TLVs are specified. The method is presented within the framework of the logistic regression model, which is widely used in the analysis of the relationship between some explanatory

Harmonizing neuropsychological test data across prospective studies.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) research relies on large datasets and advanced statistical models. However, individual population studies often lack sufficient sample size for conclusive results. Harmonizing cognitive test data across studies can address this gap, despite differences in testing protocols. This study harmonizes cognitive data from three major AD cohorts to support robust clinical-pathological modelling. METHODS: Information from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (N = 1446); Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle (N = 1764); and Open Access Series of

Use of a Zwitterionic Isoquinolinium Dye as a Solvatochromic Indicator: Structure of the Microsphere of Solvation and Explicit Solvation Modeling.

The present study uses a hybrid approach to investigate the negative solvatochromism and preferential solvation of iso-quinolinium dicarboethoxy methylid (iQ) in pure and binary solvent mixtures. UV-vis absorbance studies were combined with DFT and TD-DFT methods with implicit and explicit solvation models. The binary solvent mixtures, formed from inert and protic polar solvent pairs, were treated within the Bosch-Rosés preferential solvation models. The solvatochromic analysis revealed that the behavior in binary mixtures is described by the general model, suggesting that the two solvents int

Manipulating prior causal beliefs affects the formation of apparent causal illusions.

Non-contingent learning data can produce an apparent "illusory" or "false" perception of causality ("causal illusion"), especially if a potential cause and effect frequently co-occur - a phenomenon known as the "outcome-density bias." In contrast to the prominent bias view, Bayesian models of causal induction explain these causal illusions as the result of a rational learning process in which observed data fail to fully override non-zero causal priors. Convincing evidence for this rational explanation requires an experimentally manipulated effect of causal priors - which has so far been lackin

Association between dietary inflammatory index and Parkinson's disease: a prospective study of 165,531 UK biobank participants.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder that increasingly affects the aging population. Inflammation is implicated in both the onset and progression of PD, with diet influencing inflammatory pathways. The Dietary Inflammation Index (DII) measures diet-related inflammatory potential. This study aimed to assess the relationship between DII and PD. Using data from the UK Biobank, which included 165,531 participants, Cox proportional hazards models were applied to examine the association, adjusting for various covariates. During the study, 934 participants (0.6%) developed

Longitudinal analysis of the ABCD® study.

The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development® (ABCD) Study provides a unique opportunity to investigate developmental processes in a large, diverse cohort of youths, aged approximately 9-10 at baseline and assessed annually for 10 years. Given the size and complexity of the ABCD Study, researchers analyzing its data will encounter a myriad of methodological and analytical considerations. This review provides an examination of key concepts and techniques related to longitudinal analyses of the ABCD Study data, including: (1) characterization of the factors associated with variation in development

Towards regulatory endorsement of drug development tools to promote the application of model-informed drug development in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Drug development for rare diseases is challenged by small populations and limited data. This makes development of clinical trial protocols difficult and contributes to the uncertainty around whether or not a potential therapy is efficacious. The use of data standards to aggregate data from multiple sources, and the use of such integrated databases to develop statistical models can inform protocol development and reduce the risks in developing new therapies. Achieving regulatory endorsement of such models through defined pathways at the US Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Aut

RADIATION DOSE ESTIMATION BY COMPLETELY AUTOMATED INTERPRETATION OF THE DICENTRIC CHROMOSOME ASSAY.

Accuracy of the automated dicentric chromosome (DC) assay relies on metaphase image selection. This study validates a software framework to find the best image selection models that mitigate inter-sample variability. Evaluation methods to determine model quality include the Poisson goodness-of-fit of DC distributions for each sample, residuals after calibration curve fitting and leave-one-out dose estimation errors. The process iteratively searches a pool of selection model candidates by modifying statistical and filter cut-offs to rank the best candidates according to their respective evaluat
