Hearing Outcomes in Children with Unilateral Hearing Loss. The Benefits of Rehabilitative Strategies: Preliminary Results.

Background/Objectives: Unilateral hearing loss (UHL) is a relatively common disability condition comprising around 20-50% of all congenital hearing loss (HL). The adverse effects of UHL affect the typical development of auditory function with implications for communication, speech and language acquisition, academic development and quality of life. Current literature suggests an early intervention treatment in order to avoid developmental delays, but there is a lack of evidence about the effectiveness and use of hearing devices. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the benefits of r

Towards a closed loop retinal prosthesis: measuring electrically evoked retinal responses using large electrodes.

Objective.Sensory prostheses use arrays of electrodes to stimulate neural tissue and restore a sense of vision or hearing. At perceptible levels of stimulation, the current from each electrode spreads and causes overlapping regions of neural activation. This lack of specificity results in perceptual deficits. Methods to overcome this reduced specificity, such as a closed loop stimulation approach require measurement of the neural response to stimulation. This investigation tests the possibility of using the large stimulating electrodes such as those required by some subretinal or suprachoroida

Tmprss3 is expressed in several cell types of the inner ear including type II but hardly in type I spiral ganglion neurons.

Mutations in the transmembrane serine protease 3 gene (TMPRSS3) cause non-syndromic hearing impairment, with congenital (DFNB10) or late childhood onset (DFNB8). In some reports, these patients were found to have lower speech comprehension scores with cochlear implants (CIs) compared to CI users with other etiologies. Since CIs electrically stimulate spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) to activate the auditory pathway, TMPRSS3 deficiency was presumed to cause a dysfunction or degeneration of these cells, of which type I SGNs form the predominant group. Here, we revisited the expression pattern of T

Exploring the Contributions of Various Acoustic Features in Cantonese Vocal Emotions.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the acoustic patterns of six emotions and a neutral state in Cantonese speech by focusing on the prosodic modulations that convey emotional content in this tonal language, which has six lexical tones. METHOD: We employed the extended Geneva minimalistic acoustic parameter set to systematically analyze the acoustic features of 3,474 recordings from the Cantonese Audio-Visual Emotional Speech Database. Linear mixed-effects models were fitted to examine variations in acoustic parameters across emotional states. Decision tree models were used to a

Age-Related Hearing Loss: Evidence-Based Strategies for Early Detection and Management.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is common in older adults and has been linked to significant health and social challenges. These challenges include cognitive decline, depression, falls, and overall decreased quality of life. Despite its high prevalence, ARHL remains underdiagnosed and undertreated, partly due to its gradual onset, stigma, and lack of standardized screening and management protocols. This article provides a comprehensive overview of evidence-based strategies for the early detection and management of ARHL, with an emphasis on recent clinical practice guidelines where nurses are i

Differentiation of Spiral Ganglion Neurons from Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells: A Further Step towards Autologous Auditory Nerve Recovery.

The degeneration of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs), which convey auditory signals from hair cells to the brain, can be a primary cause of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) or can occur secondary to hair cell loss. Emerging therapies for SNHL include the replacement of damaged SGNs using stem cell-derived otic neuronal progenitors (ONPs). However, the availability of renewable, accessible, and patient-matched sources of human stem cells is a prerequisite for successful replacement of the auditory nerve. In this study, we derived ONP and SGN-like cells by a reliable and reproducible stepwise gui

The natural history, clinical outcomes, and genotype-phenotype relationship of otoferlin-related hearing loss: a systematic, quantitative literature review.

Congenital hearing loss affects one in 500 newborns. Sequence variations in OTOF, which encodes the calcium-binding protein otoferlin, are responsible for 1-8% of congenital, nonsyndromic hearing loss and are the leading cause of auditory neuropathy spectrum disorders. The natural history of otoferlin-related hearing loss, the relationship between OTOF genotype and hearing loss phenotype, and the outcomes of clinical practices in patients with this genetic disorder are incompletely understood because most analyses have reported on small numbers of cases with homogeneous OTOF genotypes. Here, w

Early Health Economic Modeling of Novel Therapeutics in Age-Related Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Health systems face challenges to accelerate access to innovations that add value and avoid those unlikely to do so. This is very timely to the field of age-related sensorineural hearing loss (ARHL), where a significant unmet market need has been identified and sizeable investments made to promote the development of novel hearing therapeutics (NT). This study aims to apply health economic modeling to inform the development of cost-effective NT. METHODS: We developed a decision-analytic model to assess the potential costs and effects of using regenerative NT in patients ≥50 with AR

Influence of Compression Thresholds and Maximum Power Output on Speech Understanding with Bone-Anchored Hearing Systems.

Bone-anchored hearing systems (BAHS) transmit sound via osseointegrated implants behind the ear. They are used to treat patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss, but speech understanding may be limited especially in users with substantial additional cochlear hearing losses. In recent years, BAHS with higher maximum power output (MPO) and more advanced digital processing including loudness compression have become available. These features may be useful to increase speech understanding in users with mixed hearing loss. We have tested the effect of 4 combinations of two different MPO levels

Factors associated with deaf-mutism in children attending special schools of rural central India: A survey.

BACKGROUND: Effects of hearing loss on the development of a child's ability to learn, to communicate, and to socialize can be devastating. If no auditory rehabilitation is done by peri-lingual period, the child develops permanent speech problems. The cases included in this category will be those having hearing loss more than 90 dB in the better ear or total loss of hearing in both the ears. Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA)/Auditory Brainstem response (ABR) has been established as the most reliable screening tool for hearing assessment in neonates. OBJECTIVES: To perform a questionn

Hearing Loss in Adults: Differential Diagnosis and Treatment.

More than 30 million U.S. adults have hearing loss. This condition is underrecognized, and hearing aids and other hearing enhancement technologies are underused. Hearing loss is categorized as conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. Age-related sensorineural hearing loss (i.e., presbycusis) is the most common type in adults. Several approaches can be used to screen for hearing loss, but the benefits of screening are uncertain. Patients may present with self-recognized hearing loss, or family members may observe behaviors (e.g., difficulty understanding conversations, increasing television volume)

Characterization of Detailed Audiological Features of Cytomegalovirus Infection: A Composite Cohort Study from Groups with Distinct Demographics.

Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection is a common congenital infection that causes sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Despite its substantial impact on public health and cost burden, epidemiology and clinical features of CMV-related SNHL have never been reported in the Korean populations. This study investigated the detailed audiologic phenotypes of cCMV infection to see if a specific SNHL pattern is associated with a particular clinical setting. A total of 38 patients with cCMV infection were studied retrospectively. Patients were classified into three groups with distinct demographics:
