Preliminary Formulation-Dependent Angiogenesis-Related and Early Osteogenic Responses to Three-Dimensional Bioprinted Hydroxyapatite-Acrylated Palm Olein Scaffolds: An In Vitro Study.

Periodontal and alveolar bone regeneration requires coordinated angiogenic and osteogenic responses supported by biomimetic scaffolds. This study compared three-dimensional bioprinted hydroxyapatite-acrylated palm olein (3D-HA-APO) scaffold formulations containing 5%, 7% and 10% (w/v) hydroxyapatite (HA), designated F1, F2 and F3, respectively. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells were cultured on the scaffolds, and background-corrected soluble vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) concentrations in culture supernatants were quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). 3D-Printed Poly (Lactic-Co-Glycolic Acid) and Graphene Oxide Nerve Guidance Conduit with Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Effective Axon Regeneration in a Rat Sciatic Nerve Defect Model.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) impact the quality of life of millions of people. The current gold standard of treatment, the autograft, fails to restore nerve function and is often associated with untoward effects. The alternative interventions available remain unable to ensure full functional recovery. For this study we developed a 3D printed nerve guidance conduit (NGC) composed of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and 0.25% graphene oxide (GO), that can be seeded with human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), to develop a more effective treatment for PNI. Patient-specific Implants Improve Volumetric Surgical Accuracy Compared to Stock Reconstruction Plates in Modern Paradigm Virtual Surgical Planning of Fibular Free Flaps for Head and Neck Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Virtual surgical planning (VSP) for composite microvascular free flaps has become standard of care for oncologic head and neck reconstruction. Controversy remains as to the use of three-dimensional (3D)-printed patient-specific titanium implants (PSIs) versus hand-bent stock reconstruction plates. Proponents of PSIs cite improved surgical accuracy, reduced operative times, and improved clinical outcomes. Detractors purport increased cost associated with PSIs and presumed equivalent accuracy with less expensive stock plates. PURPOSE: The study purpose was to measure and compare the

Fused deposition modelling for the development of drug loaded cardiovascular prosthesis.

Cardiovascular diseases constitute a number of conditions which are the leading cause of death globally. To combat these diseases and improve the quality and duration of life, several cardiac implants have been developed, including stents, vascular grafts and valvular prostheses. The implantation of these vascular prosthesis has associated risks such as infection or blood clot formation. In order to overcome these limitations medicated vascular prosthesis have been previously used. The present paper describes a 3D printing method to develop medicated vascular prosthesis using fused deposition

Open Development and Clinical Validation of Multiple 3D-Printed Nasopharyngeal Collection Swabs: Rapid Resolution of a Critical COVID-19 Testing Bottleneck.

The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a severe international shortage of the nasopharyngeal swabs that are required for collection of optimal specimens, creating a critical bottleneck blocking clinical laboratories' ability to perform high-sensitivity virological testing for SARS-CoV-2. To address this crisis, we designed and executed an innovative, cooperative, rapid-response translational-research program that brought together health care workers, manufacturers, and scientists to emergently develop and clinically validate new swabs for

3D-Printed Drug/Cell Carrier Enabling Effective Release of Cyclosporin A for Xenogeneic Cell-Based Therapy.

Systemic administration of the immunosuppressive drug cyclosporin A (CsA) is frequently associated with a number of side effects; therefore, sometimes it cannot be applied in sufficient dosage after allogeneic or xenogeneic cell transplantation. Local delivery is a possible solution to this problem. We used 3D printing to develop a CsA-loaded 3D drug carrier for the purpose of local and sustained delivery of CsA. The carrier is a hybrid of CsA-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microsphere-loaded hydrogel and a polymeric framework so that external force can be endured under physiological con

Bone remodeling after revision total hip arthroplasty for large acetabular defects.

Large acetabular bone defects are challenging in hip revision surgery. Clinical assessment is crucial to evaluate modern technologies in surgical reconstruction. We aimed to better understand the bone remodeling that occurs following acetabular reconstruction. Our objectives were: (1) To characterize changes in the shape of the pelvis by studying sequential computed tomography (CT) scans collected immediately and 1-year postoperatively and (2) to identify which part of the pelvis is most susceptible to remodeling. We used the CT scans taken at two timepoints, of 24 patients with acetabular bon

Patient-specific 3D in vitro modeling and fluid dynamic analysis of primary pulmonary vein stenosis.

INTRODUCTION: Primary pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is a rare congenital heart disease that proves to be a clinical challenge due to the rapidly progressive disease course and high rates of treatment complications. PVS intervention is frequently faced with in-stent restenosis and persistent disease progression despite initial venous recanalization with balloon angioplasty or stenting. Alterations in wall shear stress (WSS) have been previously associated with neointimal hyperplasia and venous stenosis underlying PVS progression. Thus, the development of patient-specific three-dimensional (3D)

Soft Actuators with Stiffness and Shape Modulation Using 3D-Printed Conductive Polylactic Acid Material.

The field of soft robotics has seen increasing interest and developments in recent years. Stiffness tuning is a desirable characteristic for soft robots since it enables adaptively modulating the load-bearing capability, shape, and locomotion behavior of the robots. In this article a compact and cost-effective mechanism for stiffness tuning is proposed based on a three-dimensional printed conductive polylactic acid (CPLA) material, and its potential in soft robotics is demonstrated through a soft pneumatic actuator (SPA) capable of stiffness and shape modulation. In particular, the conductive

Optimization of culture duration of bone marrow cells before transplantation with a β-tricalcium phosphate/recombinant collagen peptide hybrid scaffold.

INTRODUCTION: Currently, various kinds of materials are used for the treatment of bone defects. In general, these materials have a problem of formativeness. The three -dimensional (3D) printing technique has been introduced to fabricate artificial bone with arbitrary shapes, but poor bone replacement is still problematic. Our group has created a β⁻tricalcium phosphate (β⁻TCP) scaffold by applying 3D printing technology. This scaffold has an arbitrary shape and an internal structure suitable for cell loading, growth, and colonization. The scaffold was coated with a recombinant collagen peptide (

Advancing access to emergency care for traumatic brain injuries in Indonesia: a national program integrating task-sharing and simulation technologies.

Severe shortages and geographic maldistribution of neurosurgeons continue to limit timely access to life-saving neurosurgical care in low- and middle-income countries, with Indonesia representing a particularly acute example due to its archipelagic geography, prolonged transfer times, and rising burden of traumatic brain injury and stroke. To address delays in emergency care in districts without neurosurgical coverage, Indonesia has launched a nationally endorsed neurosurgical task-sharing initiative in which selected general surgeons are trained to perform a restricted set of emergency crania

Comparative Biomechanical Evaluation of Bicortical Screw Versus Plate Fixation in Jones Fractures of the Fifth Metatarsal Using 3D-Printed Models.

Background: Jones fractures of the 5th metatarsal are frequently associated with nonunion due to limited vascularization and repetitive mechanical stress. The aim of the study was to compare the biomechanical performance of T-plate and bicortical screw fixation using standardized 3D models. Methods: Three-dimensional models of the 5th metatarsal were generated from CT images and printed using PolyJet technology (Stratasys J5 DentaJet) using a rigid-elastic composite with properties similar to cortical and cancellous bone. Jones fractures were fixed with either a locked T-plate or a bicortical

In Vitro Assessment of Right Ventricular Outflow Tract Anatomy and Valve Orientation Effects on Bioprosthetic Pulmonary Valve Hemodynamics.

PURPOSE: The congenital heart defect Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) affects 1 in 2500 newborns annually in the US and typically requires surgical repair of the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) early in life, with variations in surgical technique leading to large disparities in RVOT anatomy among patients. Subsequently, often in adolescence or early adulthood, patients usually require surgical placement of a xenograft or allograft pulmonary valve prosthesis. Valve longevity is highly variable for reasons that remain poorly understood. METHODS: This work aims to assess the performance of biopr

The impact of microcatheter-to-vessel size ratio on distal embolization during mechanical thrombectomy-an in vitro quantitative study: Comparative study of different microcatheter sizes in different neurovascular models.

Background and purposeMechanical thrombectomy (MT) is the gold standard for treating large vessel occlusions. Given the variability in vessel anatomy among patients and the sometimes arbitrary selection of devices by neurointerventionalists, the choice of microcatheter size requires thorough evaluation. We aim to evaluate the impact of device-to-vessel size ratio on periprocedural distal embolization.Materials and methodsFragment-prone clot analogs (length = 9.86±0.07 mm) were used to embolize three different vessels (lumen = 2.0, 2.5, 3.5 mm) in a three-dimensional-printed neurovascular model

Multiplexed 3D-rGO/AuNP electrochemical aptasensor for ultrasensitive detection of urinary PSMA in prostate cancer diagnosis.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common cancers in men worldwide and remains a major cause of cancer-related deaths. The current blood test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) lacks specificity, often producing false positives and leading to unnecessary biopsies. Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), a cell-surface glycoprotein highly overexpressed in prostate cancer, can also be detected in urine and provides a promising non-invasive biomarker for accurate diagnosis. In this work, we developed a multiplexed electrochemical aptasensor based on a three-working-electrode screen-prin

A mixed reality hand fracture simulator for virtual K-wire fixation.

PURPOSE: Proper management of hand fractures requires accurate reduction of bone fragments and stabilization with Kirschner wire (K-wire) fixation. Limited case exposure in residency and a shortage of feedback-rich skills assessment constrain deliberate practice. This work describes a mixed reality hand fracture simulator that integrates a realistic physical model with instrument tracking, real-time virtual image guidance, and quantitative performance feedback for training percutaneous K-wire fixation. METHODS: We developed a benchtop mixed reality (MR) simulator integrating an electromagneti
