IOeRT conventional and FLASH treatment planning system implementation exploiting fast GPU Monte Carlo: The case of breast cancer.

Partial breast irradiation for the treatment of early-stage breast cancer patients can be performed by means of Intra Operative electron Radiation Therapy (IOeRT). One of the main limitations of this technique is the absence of a treatment planning system (TPS) that could greatly help in ensuring a proper coverage of the target volume during irradiation. An IOeRT TPS has been developed using a fast Monte Carlo (MC) and an ultrasound imaging system to provide the best irradiation strategy (electron beam energy, applicator position and bevel angle) and to facilitate the optimisation of dose pres

An OrthoBoXY-method for various alternative box geometries.

We have shown in a recent contribution [Busch and Paschek, J. Phys. Chem. B, 2023 127, 7983-7987] that for molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of isotropic fluids based on orthorhombic periodic boundary conditions with "magical" box length ratios of Lz/Lx = Lz/Ly = 2.7933596497, the computed self-diffusion coefficients Dx and Dy in x- and y-direction become system size independent. They thus represent the true self-diffusion coefficient D0 = (Dx + Dy)/2, while the shear viscosity can be determined from diffusion coefficients in x-, y-, and z-direction, using the expression η = kBT·8.1711245653

Morphology of the murine choroid plexus: Attachment regions and spatial relation to the subarachnoid space.

The choroid plexus has recently been identified as a possible migration route for peripheral immune cells into the central nervous system. For future investigation of this route, profound knowledge of the morphology of the murine choroid plexus is a prerequisite. We here present a detailed morphological description of the murine choroid plexus, its attachment regions as well as its spatial relation to the subarachnoid space. We used micro-computed tomography of immersion-contrasted fixated brains to generate three-dimensional models of the ventricle system and the choroid plexus and aligned mi

Objective analysis of the effectiveness of facial massage using breakthrough computed tomographic technology: A preliminary pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Facial massage is empirically known to be associated with morphological changes, such as improvements in facial sagging. However, quantified objective evaluations of massage-induced changes have not been performed to date. This preliminary pilot study aimed to verify the effectiveness of facial massages by using breakthrough computed tomographic technology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five healthy adult volunteers (three women and two men; age, 29-37 years) were enrolled, and computed tomography (CT) examinations using a 320 detectors-spiral CT system known as 320-multidetector-row CT

A Keratinocyte-Tethered Biologic Enables Location-Precise Treatment in Mouse Vitiligo.

Despite the central role of IFN-γ in vitiligo pathogenesis, systemic IFN-γ neutralization is an impractical treatment option owing to strong immunosuppression. However, most patients with vitiligo present with <20% affected body surface area, which provides an opportunity for localized treatments that avoid systemic side effects. After identifying keratinocytes as key cells that amplify IFN-γ signaling during vitiligo, we hypothesized that tethering an IFN-γ‒neutralizing antibody to keratinocytes would limit anti‒IFN-γ effects on the treated skin for the localized treatment. To that end, we de

Efficient search for informational cores in complex systems: Application to brain networks.

An important step in understanding the nature of the brain is to identify "cores" in the brain network, where brain areas strongly interact with each other. Cores can be considered as essential sub-networks for brain functions. In the last few decades, an information-theoretic approach to identifying cores has been developed. In this approach, interactions between parts are measured by an information loss function, which quantifies how much information would be lost if interactions between parts were removed. Then, a core called a "complex" is defined as a subsystem wherein the amount of infor

Stiffness modulation of redundant musculoskeletal systems.

This work presents a framework for computing the limbs' stiffness using inverse methods that account for the musculoskeletal redundancy effects. The musculoskeletal task, joint and muscle stiffness are regulated by the central nervous system towards improving stability and interaction with the environment during movement. Many pathological conditions, such as Parkinson's disease, result in increased rigidity due to elevated muscle tone in antagonist muscle pairs, therefore the stiffness is an important quantity that can provide valuable information during the analysis phase. Musculoskeletal re

Evaluating residual strain throughout the murine female reproductive system.

Mounting evidence suggests that cells within soft tissues seek to maintain a preferred biomechanical state. Residual stress is defined as the stress that remains in a tissue when all external loads are removed and contributes to tissue mechanohomeostasis by decreasing the transmural gradient of wall stress. Current computational models of pelvic floor mechanics, however, often do not consider residual stress. Residual strain, a result of residual stress can be quantitatively measured through opening angle experiments. Therefore, the objective of this study is to quantify the regional variation

A Poincare map based analysis of stroke patients' walking after a rehabilitation by a robot.

Since the past decade, rehabilitation robots have become common technologies for recovering gait ability after a stroke. Nevertheless, it is believed that these robots can be further enhanced. Hence, several researches are making progress in optimizing gait rehabilitation robots. However, most of these researches have only assessed the robots and their controllers in improving spatiotemporal and kinetic features of walking. There are not many researchers have focused on the robots' controllers' effects on the central nervous or neuromuscular systems. On the other hand, recently computational m

An EEG-EMG correlation-based brain-computer interface for hand orthosis supported neuro-rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Corticomuscular coupling has been investigated for long, to find out the underlying mechanisms behind cortical drives to produce different motor tasks. Although important in rehabilitation perspective, the use of corticomuscular coupling for driving brain-computer interface (BCI)-based neurorehabilitation is much ignored. This is primarily due to the fact that the EEG-EMG coherence popularly used to compute corticomuscular coupling, fails to produce sufficient accuracy in single-trial based prediction of motor tasks in a BCI system. NEW METHOD: In this study, we have introduced a

EEG-based neglect assessment: A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Spatial neglect (SN) is a neuropsychological syndrome that impairs automatic attention orienting to stimuli in the contralesional visual space of stroke patients. SN is commonly assessed using paper and pencil tests. Recently, computerized tests have been proposed to provide a dynamic assessment of SN. However, both paper- and computer-based methods have limitations. NEW METHOD: Electroencephalography (EEG) shows promise for overcoming the limitations of current assessment methods. The aim of this work is to introduce an objective passive BCI system that records EEG signals in res

Utility of the computed tomography severity index (Balthazar score) in children with acute pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies in children with acute pancreatitis have demonstrated that clinical scoring systems such as the Ranson, modified Glasgow, and pediatric acute pancreatitis scores are of value in predicting severity of the disease. The aim of this study was to determine the predictive value of the computed tomography severity index (CTSI or Balthazar score) in pediatric patients. METHODS: All children (≤ 18 years) admitted to our institution with acute pancreatitis from 2000 through 2009 were reviewed. Contrast-enhanced computed tomographic (CT) images at presentation were retrospe

Coronary venous retention-a feature in heart failure as evidenced by mean of cardiac computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Whether the functional status of the heart can influence the coronary venous system itself has not yet been examined. In order to answer this question, we used multislice computed tomography (CT) imaging. PURPOSE: To answer the question of whether the heart failure (HF) is associated with significant anatomical changes in the coronary venous system? METHODS: In 136 (aged 56.6 ± 11.5) patients, a 64-slice CT was performed. Patients were divided into three groups according their ejection fraction. In each case, nine 3D volume rendering reconstructions, using a 2-mm layer with elect

Atrial septostomy benefits severe pulmonary hypertension patients by increase of left ventricular preload reserve.

At present, it is unknown why patients suffering from severe pulmonary hypertension (PH) benefit from atrial septostomy (AS). Suggested mechanisms include enhanced filling of the left ventricle, reduction of right ventricular preload, increased oxygen availability in the peripheral tissue, or a combination. A multiscale computational model of the cardiovascular system was used to assess the effects of AS in PH. Our model simulates beat-to-beat dynamics of the four cardiac chambers with valves and the systemic and pulmonary circulations, including an atrial septal defect (ASD). Oxygen saturatio

Artificial baroreflex: clinical application of a bionic baroreflex system.

BACKGROUND: We proposed a novel therapeutic strategy against central baroreflex failure: implementation of an artificial baroreflex system to automatically regulate sympathetic vasomotor tone, ie, a bionic baroreflex system (BBS), and we tested its efficacy in a model of sudden hypotension during surgery. METHODS AND RESULTS: The BBS consisted of a computer-controlled negative-feedback circuit that sensed arterial pressure (AP) and automatically computed the frequency (STM) of a pulse train required to stimulate sympathetic nerves via an epidural catheter placed at the level of the lower thor

[A study of the movement of the articulatory organs in Japanese geminate production ANX-ray microbeam analysis].

The pattern of movements of the articulatory organs, particularly the tongue and lips, in the production of Japanese geminate was analyzed using an X-ray microbeam system. Special attention was paid to clarify the difference in the pattern of movements in geminate production from that in simple and long vowel production. The subject was a Japanese male who spoke the Tokyo dialect of Japanese. Goldpellets were attached to the uppersurface of the tongue body and dorsum, lowerlip and lower Jaw using dental adhesive. Another reference pellet was placed on the nasal dorsal, and a goldfilling in the

Ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm wall stress analysis using patient-specific finite element modeling of in vivo magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVES: Rupture/dissection of ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms (aTAAs) carries high mortality and occurs in many patients who did not meet size criteria for elective surgery. Elevated wall stress may better predict adverse events, but cannot be directly measured in vivo, rather determined from finite element (FE) simulations. Current computational models make assumptions that limit accuracy, most commonly using in vivo imaging geometry to represent zero-pressure state. Accurate patient-specific wall stress requires models with zero-pressure three-dimensional geometry, material propertie
