Melanoma segmentation based on deep learning.

Malignant melanoma is one of the most deadly forms of skin cancer, which is one of the world's fastest-growing cancers. Early diagnosis and treatment is critical. In this study, a neural network structure is utilized to construct a broad and accurate basis for the diagnosis of skin cancer, thereby reducing screening errors. The technique is able to improve the efficacy for identification of normally indistinguishable lesions (such as pigment spots) versus clinically unknown lesions, and to ultimately improve the diagnostic accuracy. In the field of medical imaging, in general, using neural net

Three-dimensional analysis of pharyngeal high-resolution manometry data.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: High-resolution manometry (HRM) represents a critical advance in the quantification of swallow-related pressure events in the pharynx. Previous analyses of the pressures measured by HRM, though, have been largely two-dimensional, focusing on a single sensor in a given region. We present a three-dimensional approach that combines information from adjacent sensors in a region. Two- and three-dimensional methods were compared for their ability to classify data correctly as normal or disordered. STUDY DESIGN: Case series evaluating new method of data analysis. METHODS: A t

Classification of hysteroscopical images using texture and vessel descriptors.

In recent years, hysteroscopy, used as an outpatient office procedure, in combination with endometrial biopsy, has demonstrated its great potential as the method of first choice in the diagnosis of various gynecological abnormalities including abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) and endometrial cancer (CA). In patients suffering with AUB, the blood vessels of the endometrium are hypertrophic, whereas in the case of CA vascularization is irregular or anarchic. In this paper, a methodology for the classification of hysteroscopical images of endometrium using vessel and texture features is presented.

An improved decision support system for detection of lesions in mammograms using Differential Evolution Optimized Wavelet Neural Network.

In this paper, a computerized scheme for automatic detection of cancerous lesion in mammograms is examined. Breast lesions in mammograms are an area with an abnormality or alteration in the breast tissues. Diagnosis of these lesions at the early stage is a very difficult task as the cancerous lesions are embedded in normal breast tissue structures. This paper proposes a supervised machine learning algorithm - Differential Evolution Optimized Wavelet Neural Network (DEOWNN) for detection of tumor masses in mammograms. Differential Evolution (DE) is a population based optimization algorithm base

Computer-aided mass detection based on ipsilateral multiview mammograms.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Recent reports on advances in computer-aided detection (CAD) indicate that current schemes miss early-stage breast cancers and result in a relatively large false-positive detection rate in order to achieve a high sensitivity rate for mass detection. This paper is inspired by the interpretation procedure from mammographers. The abnormal diagnosis can be derived from multiple views but is not available through single-view image analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A new multiview CAD system for early-stage breast cancer detection, which is based on modifying the optimized

The computerized fetal heart rate analysis in post-term pregnancy identifies patients at risk for fetal distress in labour.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the diagnostic ability of a computerized fetal heart rate (FHR) analysis system in the identification of patients at risk of fetal distress in labour. STUDY DESIGN: Three hundred and two healthy post-term pregnancies were enrolled in a retrospective, cross-sectional study and subdivided into two groups, with (n=42) or without (n=260) fetal distress in labour. The last computerized FHR recording before onset of labour was analyzed. RESULTS: The two groups showed a significant difference only in FHR baseline and in percentage of small accelerations on total. The multiva

Classification of aorta insufficiency and stenosis using neuro-fuzzy system.

Cardiac Doppler signals recorded from aorta valve of 60 patients were transferred to a personal computer by using a 16 bit sound card. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) method was applied to the recorded signal from each patient. Since FFT method inherently cannot offer a good spectral resolution at jet blood flows such as cardiac Doppler signals, it sometimes causes wrong interpretation. In order to do a good interpretation and rapid diagnosis, cardiac Doppler blood flow signals were statistically arranged and then classified using neuro-fuzzy system. The NEFCLASS model, which is used to creat

Bayesian neural network approaches to ovarian cancer identification from high-resolution mass spectrometry data.

MOTIVATION: The classification of high-dimensional data is always a challenge to statistical machine learning. We propose a novel method named shallow feature selection that assigns each feature a probability of being selected based on the structure of training data itself. Independent of particular classifiers, the high dimension of biodata can be fleetly reduced to an applicable case for consequential processing. Moreover, to improve both efficiency and performance of classification, these prior probabilities are further used to specify the distributions of top-level hyperparameters in hiera

Artificial neural network: improving the quality of breast biopsy recommendations.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the performance and inter- and intraobserver variability of an artificial neural network (ANN) for predicting breast biopsy outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five radiologists described 60 mammographically detected lesions with the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) nomenclature. A previously programmed ANN used the BI-RADS descriptors and patient histories to predict biopsy results. ANN predictive performance was compared with the clinical decision to perform biopsy. Inter- and intraobserver variability of radiologists' interpr

DEEP-LEARNING STRATEGY FOR PULMONARY ARTERY-VEIN CLASSIFICATION OF NON-CONTRAST CT IMAGES.

Artery-vein classification on pulmonary computed tomography (CT) images is becoming of high interest in the scientific community due to the prevalence of pulmonary vascular disease that affects arteries and veins through different mechanisms. In this work, we present a novel approach to automatically segment and classify vessels from chest CT images. We use a scale-space particle segmentation to isolate vessels, and combine a convolutional neural network (CNN) to graph-cut (GC) to classify the single particles. Information about proximity of arteries to airways is learned by the network by mea

Improving central apnea detection in preterm infants: Neural network strategies and clinical impact.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Preterm infants are characterized by immature cardiorespiratory systems and require continuous monitoring of physiological signals in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) to assess their clinical condition and return alarms in critical situations. However, many alarms are false or clinically irrelevant, leading to alarm fatigue for nurses and clinicians. A particularly high false alarm rate is reported for central apneas (CAs), with precision as low as 0.35. This study proposes neural networks to improve CA detection by increasing precision. METHODS: We used a refer

A genetic algorithm for self-supervised models of oscillatory neurodynamics.

Predictive processing theories propose that the brain builds internal models of its environment by reducing the discrepancy between internally generated predictions and external sensory signals. Prior work has linked these processes to oscillatory activity in gamma (40-100 Hz) and alpha/beta (10-30 Hz) frequency ranges. Current computational approaches face a trade-off: abstract predictive-processing models can implement self-supervised computations but often omit oscillatory spiking dynamics, whereas biophysically constrained spiking models can generate neural rhythms but often require extens

The neuroscience of transformers.

Neuroscience has long informed the development of artificial neural networks, but the success of modern architectures invites, in turn, the converse: can modern networks teach us lessons about brain function? Here, we examine the structure of the cortical column and propose that the transformer provides a natural computational analogy for multiple elements of cortical microcircuit organization. Rather than claiming a literal implementation of transformer equations in cortex, we develop a hypothetical mapping between transformer operations and laminar cortical features, using the analogy as an

An Upper-Probability-Based Softmax Ensemble Model for Multi-Sensor Bearing Fault Diagnosis.

In bearing fault diagnosis for rotating machinery, multi-sensor data-such as acoustic and vibration signals-are increasingly leveraged to enhance diagnostic performance. However, existing methods often rely on complex network architectures and incur high computational costs, limiting their applicability in real-time industrial environments. To address these challenges, this study proposes a lightweight and efficient multi-sensor ensemble framework that achieves high diagnostic accuracy while minimizing computational overhead. The proposed method transforms vibration and acoustic signals into s

A Deep Learning Framework Based on Denoising and 2D Image Encoding for Arrhythmia Classification.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals are essential for arrhythmia detection; however, they are frequently degraded by noise during acquisition, and their evaluation is vulnerable to data-leakage and patient-overlap issues that can compromise model assessment. Therefore, in this study, we propose an image-encoding-based arrhythmia classifier combined with a morphology-aware denoising autoencoder. We evaluate signals under a corrected, patient-independent protocol in which every model-selection decision was made on a separate validation partition. On a leakage-free test partition, the autoencoder ach

Free-Breathing Hepatic Oxygen Extraction Fraction (OEF) Mapping Using Radial GESSE.

PURPOSE: Noninvasive assessment of hepatic oxygenation is relevant for evaluating liver both in acute and long-term liver pathologies. However, existing methods are limited to single-slice acquisitions and require breath-holding. This study aims to develop and evaluate a motion-robust technique for whole-liver oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) mapping using a radial gradient-echo sampling of spin-echo (rGESSE) sequence in combination with an artificial neural network (ANN) for quantification. METHODS: Seven healthy volunteers were scanned using a 1.5 T MRI system with an 18-channel body coil.

Computational and machine learning approach for nanoparticles-enhanced bio-heat transport with coupled effects of interparticle spacing and particles radius.

Targeted delivery of drugs and hyperthermia in cardiovascular disease demand the accurate delivery of nanoparticles in complex arterial geometries. This paper introduces combined hybrid computational model that concomitantly examines the combined impact of nanoparticle radius and interparticle spacing on the thermal and mass transport characteristics of ternary bio-nanofluid flow under magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect. The ternary fluid is composed of blood fluid with suspended nanoparticles such as gold (Au), silver (Ag) silica SiO2. The mathematical model accounts for geometric properties of

segcsvdPVS: A Convolutional Neural Network-Based Tool for Quantification of Enlarged Perivascular Spaces (PVS) on T1-Weighted Images.

Enlarged perivascular spaces (PVS) are imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) that are associated with age, disease phenotypes, and overall health. Quantification of PVS is challenging but necessary to expand an understanding of their role in cerebrovascular pathology. Accurate and automated segmentation of PVS on T1-weighted images would be valuable given the widespread use of T1-weighted imaging protocols in multisite clinical and research datasets. We introduce segcsvdPVS, a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based tool for automated PVS segmentation on T1-weighted images.

Bone Cancer Cell Prediction Using an Enhanced Deep Learning Algorithm with an Optimization Technique.

OBJECTIVE: Bone cancer is a very serious disorder that can be fatal for many people. A reliable detection and classification system is required for early-stage bone cancer diagnosis. Traditional manual approaches are time-consuming and need specific skills, thus the creation of an automated system for detecting and classifying malignant and healthy bone tissue is critical. Cancerous bone tissue often has a different texture than healthy tissue in the affected location. Despite initially using Support Vector Machine and Edge Detection methods to improve outcomes, we only reached 0.92% accuracy.
