Posterior capsule opacification after cataract surgery in patients with uveitis.

PURPOSE: To compare the incidence rate of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after phacoemulsification and standard extracapsular cataract extraction (P/ECCE) in eyes with antecedent uveitis with the incidence rate in eyes without any history of intraocular inflammation. DESIGN: Review of records of 108 eyes of 78 patients with uveitis and 122 eyes of 106 patients with no uveitis who underwent P/ECCE. Rates of PCO were compared by the log-rank test of differences in the Kaplan-Meier survival curves. Proportional hazards regression models provided estimates of the relative risks of PCO amon…

Posterior Capsule Rupture and Vitreous Loss in Cataract Surgery: A Retrospective Analysis from a Swiss Tertiary Center.

PURPOSE: To determine the incidence of posterior capsule rupture (PCR) and vitreous loss (VL) during cataract surgery in a Swiss tertiary care center. Furthermore, we aimed to evaluate preoperative risk factors associated with PCR/VL, including pseudoexfoliation (PEX), age, type of anesthesia, and the Triemli Cataract Score (TCS), a locally implemented preoperative risk assessment tool for surgical complexity. METHODS: This retrospective single-center cohort study included all phacoemulsification and refractive lens exchange procedures performed at Stadtspital Zürich between January 2021 and …

PURPOSE: To describe a case of secondary acute angle closure glaucoma due to silicone oil migration into the posterior chamber causing entrapment of aqueous and its successful management. Case Presentation. A 69-year-old female presented with decreased vision and pain in the left eye (LE) for one month. She had a history of complicated phacoemulsification with nucleus drop and retinal detachment in LE, for which vitreoretinal surgery with silicone oil endotamponade was done. She was also a known case of primary open angle glaucoma on medications. The corrected distance visual acuity was 20/20 …

Anterior Chamber Shallowing from the Early Stage of Surgery and Suprachoroidal Effusion during Clear Corneal Small-Incision Cataract Surgery: A Case Report.

Suprachoroidal effusion (SCE) is a rarely observed complication due to the recent generalization of clear corneal small-incision cataract su … gressed, making the surgery progressively challenging. SCE was observed by fundus examination after phacoemulsification and cortex removal, and the wound was immediately closed with a suture. The IOP was 28 mm Hg on postoperative day (POD) 1 and decreased to 14 mm Hg on POD 5. SCE disappeared on POD 12. On POD 18, intraocular lens implantation into the bag and μLOT w …

Simultaneous Penetrating Keratoplasty, Cataract Removal and Intraocular Lens Implantation in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

INTRODUCTION: It is known that simultaneous penetrating keratoplasty, cataract removal and intraocular lens implantation are always a big challenge to a surgeon, especially in developing countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina. In these cases there is always a higher rate of different kind of intraoperative complications. Phacoemulsification after penetrating keratoplasty especially in older people may cause significant endothelial injury and also could affect long term graft survival. AIM: The aim of this report is to describe one of these challenging cases and the possible ways to manage t…

Long-term effectiveness and safety of a three-piece acrylic hydrophobic intraocular lens modified with hydroxyethyl-methacrylate: an open-label, 3-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Clareon® is a new hydrophobic acrylic optic biomaterial designed for enhanced clarity and greater resistance to glistening. The present study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of a three-piece hydrophobic, monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) Model MA60NM, made of this new optic material. METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter, open-label study, eligible patients aged ≥60 years, underwent a unilateral implantation with IOL Model MA60NM following phacoemulsification. Patients were followed-up for up to 3 years after implantation. Visual outcome and serious adverse events (SAEs,…

Frequency and Age-Related Changes in Corneal Astigmatism in Cataract Surgery Candidates at a Training Hospital in Turkey.

Background and Objectives: To evaluate the magnitude, axis and age-related changes in corneal astigmatism in patients before cataract surgery. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective, cross-sectional, and observational study, data from 2152 eyes that underwent phacoemulsification were evaluated. Keratometric values were obtained using the IOL Master 500 device. The frequency, magnitude and axis of corneal astigmatism were determined. The astigmatism axis was categorized as with the rule (WTR), against the rule (ATR), and oblique astigmatism. Quantitative analysis was performed using the p…

AIMS: To compare the visual effect and subjective satisfaction of cataract patients with different refractive states after trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. METHODS: This retrospective study describes 134 eyes of 86 patients that were implanted with trifocal IOL (TFNT00). Patients were allocated into three groups according to their preoperative axial length (AL): A group (AL ≤ 24 mm), B group (24 mm < AL < 26 mm), and C group (AL ≥ 26 mm). Postoperative visual acuity, defocus curve, visual quality and subjective satisfaction were collected and compared, and the postoperative follo

Comparative evaluation of several toric intraocular lens calculators for predicting postoperative refractive astigmatism in cataract surgery: a real-world study.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the predictive accuracy of six widely used toric intraocular lens (IOL) calculators in eyes undergoing cataract surgery with toric IOL implantation. METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed 53 eyes of 53 patients that underwent cataract extraction with toric IOL implantation using Zeiss 709 M. Six toric IOL calculators were evaluated: Barrett toric calculator (with predicted PCA, measured PCA, and TK), Kane formula (predicted PCA), and EVO 2.0 formula (predicted and measured PCA). Postoperative refractive astigmatism prediction errors
