Brewery wastewater treatment using MBR coupled with nanofiltration or electrodialysis: biomass acclimation and treatment efficiency.

Breweries release significant amounts of wastewater loaded with various organic and mineral materials. Prior studies of membrane bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment have been conducted with very little interest granted to the conditions of biomass acclimation. This study displays biomass behavior during brewery wastewater treatment by an aerobic MBR. In addition, nanofiltration and electrodialysis have been studied as potential post-treatment to decrease mineral concentrations and permit further water reuse for agriculture. An anoxic/aerobic laboratory MBR, associated with a flat sulfonated …

Small airway disease: A different phenotype of early stage COPD associated with biomass smoke exposure.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic exposure to biomass smoke (BS) can significantly compromise pulmonary function and lead to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). To determine whether BS exposure induces a unique phenotype of COPD from an early stage, with different physiopathological features compared with COPD associated with smoking (cigarette-smoke (CS) COPD), we assessed the physiopathology of early COPD associated with BS exposure (BS COPD) by incorporating spirometry, high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) imaging, bronchoscopy and pathological examinations. METHODS: In thi…

Catabolic cancer-associated fibroblasts transfer energy and biomass to anabolic cancer cells, fueling tumor growth.

Fibroblasts are the most abundant "non-cancerous" cells in tumors. However, it remains largely unknown how these cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) promote tumor growth and metastasis, driving chemotherapy resistance and poor clinical outcome. This review summarizes new findings on CAF signaling pathways and their emerging metabolic phenotypes that promote tumor growth. Although it is well established that altered cancer metabolism enhances tumor growth, little is known about the role of fibroblast metabolism in tumor growth. New studies reveal that metabolic coupling occurs between cataboli

Anaerobic treatment of low-strength synthetic TCF effluents and biomass adhesion in fixed-bed systems.

Toxicity effects produced by kraft mill effluents are due to the productive process. New bleaching processes have been proposed (e.g. total chlorine free, TCF) to reduce the production of toxic chlorine compounds. In the TCF processes large amounts of chelating compounds like the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DPTA) are used. The aim of this work is to research the feasibility of the degradation of low-strength synthetic TCF effluents in a anaerobic filter reactor (AF) and the biomass adhesion. The effects on the operation of the AF at different …

Bronchial responsiveness of non-smoking women exposed to environmental tobacco smoke or biomass fuel combustion.

We studied bronchial responsiveness (BR) in three groups of housewives with or without history of exposure to tobacco smoke or combustion of biomass fuels. Methacholine bronchoprovocation test was used to study BR. The group I subjects (60), who served as controls, were nonsmokers and had no chronic exposure to passive smoking or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) or biomass fuels. Three of these women showed a 20 per cent FEV1 fall with a cumulative methacholine dose of 72.5 mg or less. Of 60 women in group II (ETS-exposure) and 52 in group III (biomass exposure), 26 (43.3%) and 10 (19.2%) res…

Effect of storage, aqueous ammonia soaking and hydrothermal pretreatments in anaerobic digestion of Sparganium erectum biomass.

Sparganium erectum is a macrophyte whose use is very recent and offers a promising feedstock for biogas production. This study evaluates its methane yield after applying low and high-energy demand pretreatments (solar drying or ensiling, and aqueous ammonia soaking or hydrothermal treatment). These treatments are relatively easy to implement in existing biogas plants by using waste heat from the biogas engine or an aqueous ammonia solution recovered from the digestate. All pretreated biomasses exhibited higher methane yields than the untreated biomass (103 NmLCH4/gCOD), reaching the hydrotherm…

Effects of developmental stage-driven fungal community shifts on biomass and metabolite accumulation in Gastrodia elata.

BACKGROUND: Fungal communities play crucial roles in plant development and metabolite accumulation, especially in fully mycoheterotrophic medicinal plants like Gastrodia elata. While the importance of fungal symbiosis in G. elata is recognized, how fungal community dynamics evolve across its entire growth cycle and how they influence biomass and bioactive compound accumulation remain largely unclear. RESULTS: High-throughput sequencing combined with multi-omics analyses revealed that developmental progression significantly shapes fungal diversity and composition, thereby influencing biomass a…

Species Composition and Biomass Dynamics of Filamentous Algae and Their Environmental Drivers in Eriocheir sinensis Aquaculture Ponds.

Filamentous opportunistic algae, which behave as opportunistic species, are frequently observed in Eriocheir sinensis aquaculture ponds. These algae can entangle Eriocheir sinensis and release harmful substances during decomposition, thereby negatively impacting farming performance. At present, their management largely depends on non-selective herbicides, while fundamental research on species composition and biomass dynamics remains limited. In this study, 19 aquaculture ponds across five E. sinensis farms in Shanghai were monitored over a two-year period. Filamentous algae species were identi…

Insights into volatile fatty acid production and fermentation pathways of microalgae biomass combined with vinasse and glycerol.

The fermentation of industrial wastes derived from water recovery (pretreated microalgae biomass, PTMB), biodiesel (glycerol, GLY), and ethanol (vinasse, VIN)) is a promising sustainable alternative for producing volatile fatty acids (VFA). In this study, controlled fermentation experiments were performed using PTMB-VIN and PTMB-GLY mixtures with varying substrate concentrations and retention times to optimize the VFA yield and production efficiency. Acid fermentation was optimized at a 3-day hydraulic retention time, and methanogenic reactions were enhanced at longer hydraulic retention times…

Effects of biotic homogenization on community assembly and biomass production in an α × β-diversity grassland experiment.

Various studies have shown that local loss of plant species within patches (i.e., α-diversity loss) hampers plant biomass production, raising concerns about the consequences of biodiversity loss. However, biodiversity loss occurs at multiple spatial scales, and species losses at large spatial scales (γ-diversity loss) can be either caused by α-diversity loss, or by the homogenization of species compositions across patches (β-diversity loss). Yet, we poorly understand the consequences of β-diversity loss for ecosystem functioning. Here, we present the findings of the first study to experimental…

Comparative Evaluation of Soda and Nitrate-Alkaline Pulping of Hemp, Flax, and Sisal Post-harvest Biomass.

As wood is still scarce in some countries, it is necessary to replace wood in the paper industry with other lignocellulosic raw materials, particularly agricultural residues. This study evaluated hemp, flax, and sisal postharvest biomass as alternative nonwoody fibrous feedstocks for pulp and paper production. Pulping was performed using soda and nitrate-alkaline methods under comparable degrees of delignification. Their suitability for papermaking was assessed in terms of mechanical properties, fiber sedimentation (rheosedimentation), and chemical parameters, including the degree of polymeriz…

Plant-Microbiome Interactions in Medicinal Plants: A Synergistic Partnership for Biomass Production and Secondary Metabolite Accumulation.

Medicinal plants are important sources of secondary metabolites (SMs), but their production is constrained by resource shortages, low cultivation efficiency, and continuous cropping obstacles. As the "second genome" of host plants, the plant microbiome is deeply involved in plant growth and development, stress adaptation, and the accumulation of bioactive compounds, providing new pathways for the sustainable utilization of traditional Chinese medicine resources. This review summarizes the mechanisms by which the plant microbiome regulates biomass formation and SM accumulation in medicinal plan…
