Venom of parasitoid, Pteromalus puparum, suppresses host, Pieris rapae, immune promotion by decreasing host C-type lectin gene expression.

BACKGROUND: Insect hosts have evolved immunity against invasion by parasitoids, and in co-evolutionary response parasitoids have also developed strategies to overcome host immune systems. The mechanisms through which parasitoid venoms disrupt the promotion of host immunity are still unclear. We report here a new mechanism evolved by parasitoid Pteromalus puparum, whose venom inhibited the promotion of immunity in its host Pieris rapae (cabbage white butterfly). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A full-length cDNA encoding a C-type lectin (Pr-CTL) was isolated from P. rapae. Quantitative PCR and

Horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis: CT and MR findings.

Horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis (HGPPS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by absence of conjugate horizontal eye movements and progressive scoliosis developing in childhood and adolescence. We present a child with clinical and neuroimaging findings typical of HGPPS. CT and MRI of the brain demonstrated pons hypoplasia, absence of the facial colliculi, butterfly configuration of the medulla and a deep midline pontine cleft. We briefly discuss the imaging aspects of this rare entity in light of the current literature.

Intravenous access: a comparison of two methods.

The reliability in providing a continued venous route to the circulation is compared between a winged needle (Abbott "Butterfly--23 INT") and a plastic catheter (Jelco Teflon "Catheter Placement Unit", 22 gauge). The catheter remained within the vein in all cases and had a much lower incidence of total obstruction during the study period. Where an intravenous infusion is not in place, a plastic catheter provides a more reliable access route to the circulation than does a winged needle.

Onshore human swimming motion measurement and dynamic analysis using wearable inertial sensors.

Accurately measuring and assessing human swimming performance remains challenging due to difficulties in capturing full-body motion in horizontal postures and evaluating swimming dynamics based on measured data. This study proposes an integrated framework combining wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs), an onshore swim trainer, and a multi-rigid-body dynamic model to measure swimming kinematics and evaluate swimming performance. Seventeen wireless IMUs are used to capture full-body motion data during onshore breaststroke, freestyle, and butterfly strokes, and comparison with optical motio

Modified Blood Collection from Tail Veins of Non-anesthetized Mice with a Vacuum Blood Collection System and Eyeglass Magnifier.

Blood sample collection is the basis of experimental animal research. It is of importance to obtain adequate blood samples for various research purposes. The tail veins of mice are small, and it is sometimes difficult to obtain the required blood volume by conventional puncture methods. This study investigates the superiority of repeated blood sample collection from tail veins of mice through use of a vacuum blood collection system and eyeglass magnifier (experimental group) compared to conventional blood sampling methods (conventional group), performed by beginners and experts, respectively.

Radiological and biomechanical analysis of humeral fractures occurring during arm wrestling.

BACKGROUND: Arm wrestling has recently become one of the most popular sports among young people, mainly due to its simplicity and spectacularity. Yet, unfortunately it is also injury prone. The aim of the study was to perform a biomechanical analysis of the forces which act during arm wrestling, as well as to explain the mechanism of the occurrence of humeral fractures of a similar topology as observed on X-rays. MATERIAL/METHODS: During the period 2001 to 2008 nine cases of humeral fractures resulting from arm wrestling were consulted and treated at the Clinic. The assessment of the limb con

Partial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 20: 46,XX,del(20)(p11)/46,XX mosaicism.

A 46,XX/46,XX,del(20)(p11) mosaicism was identified in a 10-month-old female infant with multiple congenital anomalies, development retardation and failure to thrive. The 20p partial deletion was observed in 50% of the cells examined. Both parents had normal phenotype and karyotype. Only four other patients with partial 20p deletion are known and they are not mosaics. Their clinical findings are similar to those of our patient; in particular, they share anomalies of the vertebral column such as segmentation errors and "butterfly-shaped" vertebrae.

Training activities associated with lumbar pain exacerbation in competitive swimmers with prior lumbar spine injury: a cross-sectional survey.

Competitive swimmers often accumulate high training volumes that place repetitive stress on the lumbar spine, potentially worsening injury and pain. This study examined training activities associated with self-reported lumbar spine pain exacerbation in competitive swimmers with prior lumbar spine injury. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional survey of 285 swimmers (mean age 18.7 ± 3.1 years) assessing demographics, training exposures, and injury history. 29 swimmers (10.2%) reported a prior lumbar spine injury, including disc pathology (20.7%), spondylolysis/spondylolisthesis or facet p

Molecular identification and characterization of rhodaneses from the insect herbivore Pieris rapae.

The association of cabbage white butterflies (Pieris spec., Lepidoptera: Pieridae) with their glucosinolate-containing host plants represents a well-investigated example of the sequential evolution of plant defenses and insect herbivore counteradaptations. The defensive potential of glucosinolates, a group of amino acid-derived thioglucosides present in plants of the Brassicales order, arises mainly from their rapid breakdown upon tissue disruption resulting in formation of toxic isothiocyanates. Larvae of P. rapae are able to feed exclusively on glucosinolate-containing plants due to expressi…

Estimated nationwide effects of pesticide spray drift on terrestrial habitats in the Netherlands.

This study estimated the potential effects of pesticide drift on terrestrial ecosystems outside target areas, for the Dutch situation. A series of field trials was conducted to estimate the effects of drift on different species groups at different distances from a treated plot for different categories of pesticide: herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. Measurements of the pesticide drift deposition resulting from standard agricultural practice were used to model deposition outside the treated area. These data were then combined with national statistics on cropland and pesticide use to asses
