Severe encephalitis resulting from coinfections with HIV and JC virus.

We observed 3 cases of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) among frozen CNS samples obtained at autopsy from 102 adult AIDS patients. In 2 patients, PML was associated with severe HIV encephalitis. In those 2 cases, the areas of extensive JC-induced demyelination were massively infiltrated by HIV infected macrophages/microglial cells with evidence for localized increase of HIV encephalitis in PML lesions. Using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, we demonstrated that each virus infects, in a latent or productive fashion, different CNS cell populations. Therefore, the e

The Long Shadow of Early HCMV-HIV Coinfection: Epidemiology, Pathogenesis, and Immune Consequences.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are two pathogens known to have dramatic consequences when contracted early in life. In addition to having a significant impact when acquired individually, these two viruses are known to frequently cause coinfections. Indeed, also in the modern era, HCMV remains one of the most prevalent coinfections in newborns of mothers living with HIV, including both HIV-positive children regardless of their immune status, and those exposed to HIV but uninfected (HEU). In children with HIV infection, HCMV coinfection has historically been …

Secondary Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis Triggered by Mixed Plasmodium spp. and SARS-CoV-2 Coinfection.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a life-threatening hyperinflammatory syndrome that may be triggered by infectious diseases, including malaria and viral infections. A case of mixed Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum infection concomitant with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in a patient who developed secondary HLH is described in the present study. Malaria was acquired in the endemic state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, but diagnosed in Macaé, Rio de Janeiro, a nonendemic region. The patient presented with high fever, pancytopenia, hypertriglyceridemia, and hyperfer

Coinfection of Leprosy and American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: A Case Report From Ceará, Brazil.

Leprosy and American cutaneous leishmaniasis are endemic diseases in Brazil that may coexist in the same host, particularly in coendemic reg … , with favorable outcomes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first published report of such coinfection in Ceará. This case highlights the importance of sampling lesions with distinct morphologies and integrating clinical, histopathological, and laboratory findings in endemic settings.

Two epidemics, one patient: coinfection by SARS-CoV-2 and influenza in Colombia.

INTRODUCTION: Coinfection by SARS-CoV-2 and influenza (commonly referred to as "Flurona") presents a significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in pandemic and postpandemic settings. Although the two viruses share clinical similarities and transmission routes, their treatments differ substantially. The early suspicion of viral coinfection is crucial, particularly in patients with comorbidities or atypical clinical courses. A literature review was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar (Spanish and English), identifying few documented clinical reports in Colombia. CASE DESCRIPTI…

Advances in host-directed therapy for tuberculosis and HIV coinfection: enhancing immune responses.

Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV coinfection present a significant global health challenge worldwide. While most individuals infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) have clinically asymptomatic latent TB infection (LTBI), those with immunosuppressive conditions, such as HIV, are at higher risk for reactivation and disseminated TB. HIV exacerbates TB progression by impairing immune responses, particularly through the depletion of Mtb-specific CD4+ T cells and chronic immune activation. Despite the success of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) in managing HIV, it does not eliminate the risk …

Epidemiology of tuberculosis and HIV coinfection among inpatients in chengdu, china, 2018-2022.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are infectious diseases that pose serious threats to human health. TB and HIV can interact to promote the progression of diseases. This study aims to provide basic evidence for the formulation of disease prevention and control strategies. METHOD: A retrospective study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of demographics and comorbidity, in an attempt to identify factors associated with HIV and TB coinfection among TB inpatients at Public Health Clinical Center of Chengdu, China from January 2018 to December …

Coinfection between Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: A 20-year Bibliometric Study.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) has a major global impact and has been reported as one of the most relevant complications in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The aim of this study was to analyze the bibliometric parameters of the scientific literature indexed in Scopus regarding the coinfection between PTB and SLE. METHODS: A bibliometric study was conducted using a search strategy with MeSH terms to identify articles indexed in Scopus. After screening, 122 articles were included in the study. Bibliometric tools (SciVal, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrix) were used to anal…

Disseminated talaromycosis with pulmonary tuberculosis coinfection in an immunocompromised patient mimicking disseminated histoplasmosis.

Opportunistic infections in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can mimic each other, complicating diagnosis. Here, we report a rare case of disseminated Talaromyces marneffei in a 39-year-old immunocompromised male with HIV and pulmonary tuberculosis. The patient had respiratory symptoms, systemic manifestations, and skin lesions. Clinical and pathological investigations suggested disseminated histoplasmosis; however, microbiological culture confirmed the diagnosis of disseminated talaromycosis. Imaging confirmed central nervous system involvement. Treatment with amphotericin B l

Preventing human influenza and coronaviral mono or coinfection by blocking virus-induced sialylation.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) and endemic coronaviruses (eCoVs) are common etiologic agents for seasonal respiratory infections. The human H1N1 of IAV and coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43) can result in hospitalization, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and even death, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. They infect the epithelium of the respiratory tract by interacting with host cell sialic acid (Sia)- linked receptors whose synthesis is catalyzed by sialyltransferases (STs). Viral coinfection is challenging to treat because of the need to target specific components of two or mor…

Escherichia coli and HPV16 coinfection may contribute to the development of cervical cancer.

Persistent human papillomavirus HPV infection is a necessary but insufficient condition for cervical cancer. Malaria and COVID-19 coinfection in a non-malaria-endemic area in Brazil.

Differential diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) from other febrile diseases is one of several challenges imposed by the pandemic. We present a case of severe malaria and COVID-19 coinfection in a non-malaria-endemic region. A 44-year-old female with malaise, fever, hypotension, jaundice, and enlarged liver and spleen was admitted to the intensive care unit. Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR results for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 were positive. Rapid tests, microscopy, and quantitative PCR were positive for Plasmodium vivax. Cytokine storm profiles were i…
