Three cases from two families with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism and progressive sensorineural deafness are described. Cases 1 and 2 were siblings. Case 3 was one of four siblings from another family. All of them had both idiopathic hypoparathyroidism and progressive sensorineural hearing loss. There was no evidence to suggest involvement of autoimmune mechanism in these cases except for the associated Graves' hyperthyroidism in case 3. Human leukocyte antigen A9 and A11 were positive in both families. The sensorineural hearing loss was progressive even after the treatment for hypoparathyroidi…

Epstein's triad is a syndrome with a combination of hereditary macrothrombocytopathia and progressive sensorineural hearing loss and nephritis. This syndrome is rare and may be inherited as dominant trait or sex-linked or new mutation. But the true mode of this syndrome is still questionable. Bilateral sensorineural hearing loss is progressive and seems not to be related to the severity of bleeding episodes and renal failure. An 8-year-old boy with these findings is presented and discussed in this article.

A man aged 43 suffering from acute bilateral sudden deafness of sensorineural type (confirmed at repeated testings) and without signs and symptoms from the vestibular part of the inner ear regained normal hearing within 10 days. The serological examination for identification of viral antibodies in blood and liquor was negative. There was no sign of immunological disorder.

Clinical, pathologic, and laboratory studies suggesting a viral etiology for sudden deafness have been presented. Although a cause and effect relationship has not been proven, the frequent close association between viral infection and sudden deafness constitutes a strong argument in favor of a viral etiology of sudden deafness in about one of three patients with sudden deafness.

Although congenital syphilis is a well established cause of hearing loss, early acquired syphilis is frequently overlooked in the differential diagnosis of sensorineural deafness. This is due, in part, to a decrease in the incidence of syphilis and to the advent of penicillin in previous years which reduced this complication to a clinical rarity. However, with the increase in new cases of syphilis in the past decade, early acquired syphilitic deafness is being seen with increasing frequency. Along with it is the syndrome of early syphilitic meningitis with sudden sensorineural deafness. This p…

The histopathological study of two cases of sudden deafness is presented. The temporal bones showed cochleosaccular abnormality. The most striking pathological changes were collapse of the organ of Corti, atrophy of the tectorial membrane, atrophy of the stria vascularis, decrease in the number of the cochlear nerves, collapse of the saccular membrane and partial absence of the sensory epithelial layer in the saccular macula. These changes are quite similar in type to those occurring in labyrinthitis of known viral etiology and to those in previously reported cases of sudden deafness which wer…

In an attempt to study the relevance of ophthalmological changes to the diagnosis of cochlear hearing impairment due to fetal rubella infection, a survey of the literature combined with a clinical investigation was carried out. Based on the investigation of 57 patients, 31% had congenital hearing impairment due to fetal rubella infection. Of these patients, 61% had typical rubella retinal changes. In the remaining 69%, ophthalmoscopy revealed no abnormality, except in 1 patient. As the cause of the hearing impairment in this patient was unknown, it was concluded that the mother had suffered fr

Today neomycin is almost exclusively given as an ointment in combination with other antibiotics, because of its known oto- and nephrotoxicity. Topical application in high dosage can cause ototoxicity as proved by one patient from this clinic. After laryngectomy and neck dissection for an extensive carcinoma of the epiglottis a 2 X 2 cm dehiscent pyocyaneus infected wound was treated daily with neomycin sulphate solution. A total of 30 gm was given over 3 months during which time the patient became deaf neomycin caused the deafness.
