Effectiveness of casein hydrolysate feedings in infants with colic.

This study found that two casein hydrolysate formulas varying in composition were equally effective in managing colicky symptoms associated with protein sensitivity. Both hydrolysate formulas were associated with a significant, comparable reduction in crying duration and intensity from baseline in 15 of 22 infants with complete data. Subsequent challenge data suggest that the population studied were infants experiencing colicky symptoms due to protein sensitivity. A greater proportion of infants showed a positive reaction (> or = 1.5 h of crying/d) to the protein challenges than the placebo ch

Pharmaceutical preparations. A review of drugs commonly used during the neonatal period.

Certified nurse-midwives, whose responsibility includes care of the newborn in the first days of life, should be well versed in the commonly used pharmaceutical preparations in the neonatal period. This article reviews therapeutic uses and the pharmacodynamics of vitamin K, as well as the neonatal eye preparations for prophylaxis of infections (silver nitrate, tetracycline, and erythromycin ophthalmic ointments). Preparations used in caring for the umbilical cord, as well as the commonly prescribed antibiotics ampicillin and gentamicin, are discussed. The narcotic antagonist naloxone is also r

The perineal eruption of Kawasaki syndrome.

The occurrence of a distinctive perineal eruption that appears in infants and children early in the course of Kawasaki syndrome has received little attention in the medical literature. Medical records of patients hospitalized during the acute phase of Kawasaki syndrome were reviewed to evaluate the prevalence of an erythematous, desquamating perineal eruption. The frequency of this eruption was compared with the syndrome's other diagnostic criteria. Thirty-nine (67%) of the 58 patients who fulfilled the criteria for the diagnosis of Kawasaki syndrome had documentation of the perineal rash that

A Natural Cream-to-Powder Formulation Developed for the Prevention of Diaper Dermatitis in Diaper-Wearing Infants and Children: Barrier Property and In-Use Tolerance Studies.

INTRODUCTION: Diaper dermatitis is a common condition that develops in the diaper area due to factors such as elevated moisture, increased skin surface pH, and exposure to irritants from urine and feces. These factors suggest interventions to prevent or treat diaper dermatitis such as exposing the skin to air, frequent diaper changes, and thorough cleansing of the diaper area. Barrier creams and powders also have a role in preventing and treating diaper dermatitis. We developed a cream-to-powder product with a formula based on corn starch and other natural ingredients for use in the diaper are

Cholestyramine ointment to treat buttocks rash and anal excoriation in an infant.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel treatment for perianal excoriation in an infant receiving a promotility agent. CASE SUMMARY: A 2-month-old boy with reflux, and regurgitation was treated with cisapride. Shortly after cisapride therapy he developed a rash on his buttocks and anal irritation that progressed in severity despite the use of numerous topical products and extended diaper-free periods. A topical cholestyramine ointment compound was prepared and administered, resulting in complete resolution within 3 days. DISCUSSION: Cisapride can decrease the gastrointestinal transit time, which can

Evaluation of the efficacy of local application of bee products in the care of diaper dermatitis in infants: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This randomized controlled trial compared the effects of a barrier cream containing propolis, beeswax, queen bee larvae, and vegetable oil (barrier cream 1) with those of zinc oxide (barrier cream 2) and olive oil on the healing of mild diaper dermatitis (DD). METHODS: A single-blind, parallel-group, pretest-posttest, repeated-measures randomized controlled trial was conducted. The study included infants aged 1-6 months diagnosed with mild DD, who were recruited from three family health centers and a pediatric outpatient clinic in a public hospital in a district of the

Parent-guided home skin care for infants via a WeChat platform: a study protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Diaper dermatitis and eczema are common skin conditions that affect infants with a high incidence rate. The prevention and management of these conditions largely depend on parents' adherence to appropriate home skin care practices, with the effectiveness of these practices closely linked to their accurate and consistent implementation. WeChat, a widely used messaging platform in China, has demonstrated potential in promoting health awareness and self-management strategies. We have developed a WeChat-based parent-guided home skin care scheme for infants, specifically designed to ass

Perianal pseudoverrucous papules and nodules after surgery for Hirschsprung disease.

We report two patients with Hirschsprung disease in whom severe diarrhea and a distinctive diaper dermatitis developed after delayed ileoanal anastomosis. The perianal papulonodular lesions cleared in months or years without specific treatment after resolution of the diarrhea. These perianal pseudoverrucous papules and nodules represent a peculiar form of primary irritant diaper dermatitis, distinct from Jacquet erosive diaper dermatitis and granuloma gluteale infantum.

Childhood psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease. Recently, few data have been published on epidemiology, comorbidity, or therapy in children with psoriasis. Psoriasis affects up to 2% of children in Europe, even during the first months of life. The link between psoriasis and metabolic comorbidities has been highlighted, notably in relation to excessive weight and obesity. The clinical picture of psoriasis in childhood resembles adult disease, however, some clinical features are noteworthy: neonatal diaper rash is relatively specific, face involvement and guttate psoriasis are more comm…

Documentation of impaired epidermal barrier in mild and moderate diaper dermatitis in vivo using noninvasive methods.

The presence of irritants from feces and urine with the concurrent mechanical friction and occlusion creates an environment in the diapered area that renders the skin prone to diaper dermatitis. Besides being a source of discomfort to the infant, these skin irritations pose a risk of secondary infections. In this study, we used noninvasive in vivo techniques to define measurable parameters that correlate with diaper dermatitis pathophysiology. In 35 infants (16 with mild or moderate and 19 without diaper dermatitis) we compared skin of diapered areas afflicted with diaper dermatitis to lesion-

Skin interaction with absorbent hygiene products.

Skin problems due to the use of absorbent hygiene products, such as diapers, incontinence pads, and feminine sanitary articles, are mostly due to climate or chafing discomfort. If these conditions are allowed to prevail, these may develop into an irritant contact dermatitis and eventually superficial skin infections. Skin humidity and aging skin are among the most significant predisposing and aggravating factors for dermatitis development. Improved product design features are believed to explain the decline in observed diaper dermatitis among infants. Where adult incontinence-related skin prob
