Self-expandable transcatheter aortic valve replacement is associated with frequent periprocedural stroke detected by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Little evidence is available regarding the risk of peri-procedural stroke detected by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Our purpose was to evaluate stroke risk after TAVR using DW-MRI by enrolling consecutive patients who underwent transfemoral TAVR and post-procedural DW-MRI. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 113 consecutive patients who underwent transfemoral TAVR and post-procedural DW-MRI. We used balloon-expandable valves as first-line therapy and selected self-expandable valves only for patients with

Oscillating-gradient diffusion magnetic resonance imaging detects acute subcellular structural changes in the mouse forebrain after neonatal hypoxia-ischemia.

The recently developed oscillating-gradient diffusion MRI (OG-dMRI) technique extends our ability to examine brain structures at different spatial scales. In this study, we investigated the sensitivity of OG-dMRI in detecting cellular and subcellular structural changes in a mouse model of neonatal hypoxia ischemia (HI). Neonatal mice received unilateral HI injury or sham injury at postnatal day 10, followed by in vivo T2-weighted and diffusion MRI of the brains at 3-6 h and 24 h after HI. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps were acquired using conventional pulsed-gradient dMRI (PG-dMRI)

Magnetic resonance imaging of blood-brain barrier permeability in ischemic stroke using diffusion-weighted arterial spin labeling in rats.

Diffusion-weighted arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance imaging has recently been proposed to quantify the rate of water exchange (Kw) across the blood-brain barrier in humans. This study aimed to evaluate the blood-brain barrier disruption in transient (60 min) ischemic stroke using Kw magnetic resonance imaging with cross-validation by dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging and Evans blue histology in the same rats. The major findings were: (i) at 90 min after stroke (30 min after reperfusion), group Kw magnetic resonance imaging data showed no significant blood-brain barr

Detection of renal allograft rejection using blood oxygen level-dependent and diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Acute rejection (AR) and acute tubular necrosis (ATN) are main causes of early renal allograft dysfunction. Blood oxygen level-dependent magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD MRI) and Diffusion weighted (DW) MRI can provide valuable information about changes of oxygen bioavailability and water diffusion by measuring R2* or apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) respectively. We aimed to determine the value of BOLD MRI and DW MRI in detecting causes for early allograft dysfunction in renal allograft recipients. METHODS: Fifty patients received renal allografts from deceased donors were an

[Hemiconvulsion-hemiplegia syndrome: two case reports with findings from magnetic resonance imaging of the brain in diffusion-weighted sequences].

INTRODUCTION: Hemiconvulsion-hemiplegia (HH) syndrome is characterised by prolonged hemiclonic seizures followed by, very often permanent, hemiplegia. We report the cases of two patients with HH syndrome; in addition, the paper also includes a discussion of the value of neuroimaging in its diagnosis, including the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain in diffusion-weighted sequences, and its clinical-radiological progression. CASE REPORTS: Case 1: a 16-month-old female who was admitted to hospital owing to right-side hemiclonic seizures, with a febrile condition, that lasted at

Microstructure of temporo-parietal white matter as a basis for reading ability: evidence from diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging.

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to study the microstructural integrity of white matter in adults with poor or normal reading ability. Subjects with reading difficulty exhibited decreased diffusion anisotropy bilaterally in temporoparietal white matter. Axons in these regions were predominantly anterior-posterior in direction. No differences in T1-weighted MRI signal were found between poor readers and control subjects, demonstrating specificity of the group difference to the microstructural characteristics measured by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). White matter diff

Apparent diffusion coefficient map based on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging is useful in diagnosing the brainstem variant of reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome with uremia.

A 54-year-old Japanese man entered our hospital for investigation of appetite loss. His blood pressure was 201/113 mmHg, and laboratory findings revealed renal failure and hyponatremia. On physical examination, disorientation and dysarthria were observed. Hemodialysis was performed the same day. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after hemodialysis revealed swelling of the brainstem and a high signal intensity on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging, similar to findings of central pontine myelinolysis (CPM), which is generally irreversible. However, on an apparent diffusion coeffi
