Stereoscopic object categorization is influenced by both low-level visual features and high-level contextual attributes. Here, we investigated how object naturalness and real-world size affect behavioural and neural responses during object categorization when visual input is restricted to stereoscopic depth information. In Experiment 1, participants performed a behavioural task to judge (as quickly as possible) whether stereoscopic objects, defined solely by binocular disparity and without texture or colour cues, were 'natural' or 'man-made'. The stimuli presented varied in terms of their natu

BACKGROUND: External trigeminal nerve stimulation (eTNS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation method approved for treating migraines and pediatric attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and is under investigation for a variety of disorders. Despite the manifest therapeutic potential of eTNS, substantial variability remains across studies, and the mechanisms underlying eTNS effects remain poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the effect of eTNS on cortical activity and ways specific stimulation parameters modulate these responses in healthy adults using electroencephalography (…

Children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) present with clinically significant motor impairments. Previous research indicates altered brain activity in DCD during the completion of motor and cognitive tasks, but little is known about intrinsic or spontaneous neural activity in children with the disorder. To address this gap, this study examined resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) in 31 children with DCD and 52 age-matched typically developing (TD) controls in both eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions. The mean age of the sample was 9.5 years (SD = 2.4; range 5.1-14.8). Diff…

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia pose significant health challenges in aging societies, emphasizing the need for accessible, cost-effective, and noninvasive diagnostic tools. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a promising biomarker, but traditional systems are limited by size, cost, and the need for skilled technicians. This study proposes a deep-learning-based approach using data from a portable EEG device to distinguish healthy volunteers (HVs) from patients with dementia-related conditions. We analyzed EEG data from 233 participants, including 119 HVs and 114 patients, and transfor…

OBJECTIVE: Monoclonal antibodies targeting amyloid-β (Aβ) show disease-modifying potential in Alzheimer's disease (AD), making early identification of Aβ-positive individuals at the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage essential. Functional network metrics derived from electroencephalography (EEG) may reflect Aβ-related network disruption and serve as viable screening tools.
METHODS: This study included patients with cognitive decline who underwent 18F-flutemetamol PET/CT, EEG, and neuropsychological testing at Korea University Anam Hospital (2020-2024). Participants were categorized into su…

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying alcohol use disorder (AUD) remain unclear, and its clinical evaluation largely depends on subjective assessments lacking objective biomarkers. This study employed a case-control design incorporating resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) with power spectral analysis (PSA) and dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) to explore potential biomarkers for AUD.
METHODS: Resting-state EEG data were collected from individuals diagnosed with AUD and demographically matched healthy controls (HCs), alongside comprehensive neuropsychological and …

Brain resection is curative for a subset of patients with drug resistant epilepsy but up to half will fail to achieve sustained seizure freedom in the long term. There is a critical need for accurate prediction tools to identify patients likely to have recurrent postoperative seizures. Results from preclinical models and intracranial EEG in humans suggest that the window of time immediately before and after a seizure ("peri-ictal") represents a unique brain state with implications for clinical outcome prediction. Using a dataset of 294 patients who underwent temporal lobe resection for seizure

The diagnostic and prognostic value of quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) in the the onset of postoperative delirium (POD) remains an area of inquiry. We aim to determine whether qEEG could assist in the diagnosis of early POD in cardiac surgery patients. We prospectively studied a cohort of cardiac surgery patients undergoing qEEG for evaluation of altered mental status. Delirium was assessed with the Confusion Assessment Method for the intensive care unit (CAM-ICU). The qEEG were interpreted by clinician, and reports were reviewed to identify features such as amplitude-integrated EEG (

The complication rate of stereotactic electroencephalography (SEEG) is generally low, but various types of postoperative hemorrhage have been reported. We presented an unusual hemorrhagic complication after SEEG placement. A 20-year-old man presented with suspected frontal lobe epilepsy. We implanted 11 SEEG electrodes in the bilateral frontal lobes and the left insula. Computed tomography after implantation showed intraparenchymal hemorrhage in the left temporal lobe and insula and subarachnoid hemorrhage in the left Sylvian cistern. Later, the point of vessel injury was revealed from the ide…

OBJECTIVES: More than half of patients with acute ischemic stroke develop post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI), a significant barrier to future neurological recovery. Thus, predicting cognitive trajectories post-AIS is crucial. Our primary objective is to determine whether brain network properties from electroencephalography (EEG) can predict post-stroke cognitive function using machine learning approach.
METHODS: We enrolled consecutive stroke patients who underwent both EEG during the acute stroke phase and cognitive assessments 3 months post-stroke. We preprocessed acute stroke EEG data…

Schizophrenia is associated with aberrations in the Default Mode Network (DMN), but the clinical implications remain unclear. We applied data-driven, unsupervised machine learning based on resting-state electroencephalography (rsEEG) functional connectivity within the DMN to cluster antipsychotic-naïve patients with first-episode schizophrenia. The identified clusters were investigated with respect to psychopathological profile and cognitive deficits. Thirty-seven antipsychotic-naïve, first-episode patients with schizophrenia (mean age 24.4 (5.4); 59.5% males) and 97 matched healthy controls (…

Objective: Severe pain and other symptoms in complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), such as allodynia and hyperalgesia, are associated with abnormal resting-state brain network activity. No studies to date have examined resting-state brain networks in CRPS patients using electroencephalography (EEG), which can clarify the temporal dynamics of brain networks. Methods: We conducted microstate analysis using resting-state EEG signals to prospectively reveal direct correlations with pain intensity in CRPS patients (n = 17). Five microstate topographies were fitted back to individual CRPS patients'…

As a minimally invasive recording technique, stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) measures intracranial signals directly by inserting depth electrodes shafts into the human brain, and thus can capture neural activities in both cortical layers and subcortical structures. Despite gradually increasing SEEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI) studies, the features utilized were usually confined to the amplitude of the event-related potential (ERP) or band power, and the decoding capabilities of other time-frequency and time-domain features have not been demonstrated for SEEG recordings yet. In th…

BACKGROUND: Changes in the direct current (DC) electroencephalography (EEG), so-called DC shifts, are observed during hypoxia, hypo-/hypercapnia, anesthetic administration, epileptic seizures, and spreading depolarizations. They are associated with altered cerebral ion currents across cell membranes and/or the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Here, we measured DC shifts in clinical practice during hyperventilation (HV) and anesthesia induction, and investigated whether such DC shifts correlate with the occurrence of postoperative delirium (POD) in older patients.
METHODS: In this prospective observ…
