Considerations in screeneing/measuring children with internal/external contamination.

The National Internal Radiation Assessment Section, which operates the Canadian National Calibration Reference Centre for Bioassay and In Vivo Monitoring, has field deployable equipment for emergency response. A substantial part of this toolkit is a set of portal monitors that can be used to quickly screen people into 'uncontaminated' and 'contaminated'. The former term refers to a person who has <60 kBq (empirical practical detection limit) of activation/fission products and the latter group is contaminated by that amount or more. Previous work has focused on how to process large numbers of p

Novel coating to reduce medical device encrustation.

Mineral encrustation is a common complication associated with the use of urethral catheters and stents. A pH-controlling coating has been developed to reduce mineral encrustation on device surfaces by preventing the elevation of surface pH. Primary data show that the approach has the potential to reduce encrustation on the molecular level.

COVID-19: risk of ocular transmission in health care professionals.

INTRODUCTION: The current pandemic of severe acute respiratory symptom coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has had a major impact on individuals' lives. Social isolation and the use of personal protective equipment - the latter being especially important for health care workers - emerged as two of the main methods of preventing the spread of the disease. The eye can represent a source of transmission through contaminated tears, as well as a source of infection for respiratory droplets or aerosol particles, which may come into contact with the ocular surface and migrate to the lungs and other parts of t

COVID-19 global pandemic planning: Dry heat incubation and ambient temperature fail to consistently inactivate SARS-CoV-2 on N95 respirators.

The ongoing pandemic of the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has placed a substantial strain on the supply of personal protective equipment, particularly the availability of N95 respirators for frontline healthcare personnel. These shortages have led to the creation of protocols to disinfect and reuse potentially contaminated personal protective equipment. A simple and inexpensive decontamination procedure that does not rely on the use of consumable supplies is dry heat incubation. Although reprocessing with this method has been shown to maintain the integrity

Water Sampling Module for Collecting and Concentrating Legionella pneumophila from Low-to-Medium Contaminated Environment.

The detection of water contamination with Legionella pneumophila is of critical importance to manufacturers of water processing equipment and public health entities dealing with water networks and distribution systems. Detection methods based on polymerase chain reaction or biosensor technologies require preconcentration steps to achieve attractive sensitivity levels. Preconcentration must also be included in protocols of automated collection of water samples by systems designed for quasi-continuous monitoring of remotely located water reservoirs for the presence of L. pneumophila. We designed

Aseptic Technique.

This article describes common laboratory procedures that can reduce the risk of culture contamination (sepsis), collectively referred as "aseptic technique." Two major strategies for aseptic work are described: using a Bunsen burner and using a laminar flow hood. Both methods are presented in the form of general protocols applicable to a variety of laboratory tasks such as pipetting and dispensing aliquots, preparing growth media, and inoculating, passaging, and spreading microorganisms on petri dishes. © 2020 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Double high-level disinfection versus liquid chemical sterilization for reprocessing of duodenoscopes used for ERCP: a prospective randomized study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The potential for transmission of pathogenic organisms is a problem inherent to the current reusable duodenoscope design. Recent outbreaks of multidrug-resistant pathogenic organisms transmitted via duodenoscopes has brought to light the urgency of this problem. Microbiologic culturing of duodenoscopes and reprocessing with repeat high-level disinfection (HLD) or liquid chemical sterilization (LCS) have been offered as supplemental measures to enhance duodenoscope reprocessing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This study aims to compare the efficacy of reprocessing

Assessment of surgical instrument bioburden after steam sterilization: A pilot study.

In environments in which manual decontamination and steam sterilization remains the primary method of sterilization, biofilm formation can increase the risk of disease transmission. To determine the risk of bacterial survival and contamination on surgical instruments, inoculated blood was dried on one instrument and steam sterilized (wrapped or unwrapped) in a set of 4 (including 3 clean). Two of 3 pathogens were recovered at a rate of 15% for unwrapped sets and 33% for wrapped sets.

A prospective analysis of clinical detection of defective wrapping by operating room staff.

Surgical instrument trays are wrapped for sterilization, and these wraps are inspected by operating room personnel for defects before using the instruments. In this study, we intentionally damaged wraps, and these wraps were evaluated by operating room personnel. Examiners correctly identified a wrapper's sterile integrity with an overall 56.1% accuracy, with correct identification of 67.2% for defects between 2 and 5 cm. However, studies have shown bacterial contamination through defects as small as 1.1 mm. This study suggests that the current method for assessing sterility is inadequate.
