INTRODUCTION: Phtiriasis palperarum is an unusual cause of blepharitis. This ectoparasitic infestation of the lashes is more frequent in adult; a pubic attack is usually associated. Entropion is a malposition of the eyelid causing an abnormal inversion of the eyelid margin. This results in symptomatic contact of the eyelashes with the surface of the globe, resulting in corneal irritation. Symptoms primarily arise from irritation of the ocular surface. Trachoma is the most common infectious cause of blindness. Repeated episodes of infection with Chlamydia trachomatis in childhood lead to severe conjunctival inflammation, scarring, and potentially blinding inturned eyelashes (trichiasis or entropion) in later life. Hereditary Ectodermal Dysplasia is an inherited disorder commonly involving skin, teeth, hair, and nails. We have observed ectodermal dysplasia (EDs) in 11 individuals over two generations in one family. Smooth, dry, thin skin was seen in most affected individuals. An algorithm for estimating the corneal limbus from videokeratoscopic images is proposed. After the image is transformed to a polar grid, a novel edge-detection procedure, suitable for the detection of the soft edge produced by the limbus, is used to locate the limbus.
