The impact of the 2009 influenza pandemic on the seasonality of human respiratory syncytial virus: A systematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Several local studies showed that the 2009 influenza pandemic delayed the RSV season. However, no global-level analyses are available on the possible impact of the 2009 influenza pandemic on the RSV season. OBJECTIVES: We aim to understand the impact of the 2009 influenza pandemic on the RSV season. METHODS: We compiled data from published literature (through a systematic review), online reports/datasets and previously published data on global RSV seasonality and conducted a global-level systematic analysis on the impact of the 2009 influenza pandemic on RSV seasonality. RESULTS

A fully integrated duplex RT-LAMP device for the detection of viral infections.

Respiratory viruses can cause epidemics or pandemics, which are worldwide outbreaks of disease. The severity of these events varies depending on the virus, its characteristics, along with environmental factors. The frequency of epidemics and pandemics caused by respiratory viruses is difficult to predict, but the potential severity of such events underlines the importance of continued monitoring, research, and preparation for emerging infectious diseases. To help improve pandemic preparedness, we created a fully integrated duplex reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT…

The global demand and potential public health impact of oral antiviral treatment stockpile for influenza pandemics.

Antiviral drugs are among the few countermeasures available during the critical interval between the emergence of a novel influenza pandemic and vaccine availability. Antiviral stockpiling is a key pandemic preparedness measure, yet existing stockpiling estimates vary widely and rest on outdated assumptions about healthcare-seeking behavior and drug-specific effectiveness-limitations that the COVID-19 pandemic and recent clinical trial evidence have made untenable. We developed a multiscale transmission model incorporating heterogeneous healthcare-seeking behavior and direct clinical estimates…

How Broadly Neutralising Antibodies Are Redefining Immunity to Influenza.

Recent avian influenza outbreaks have heightened global concern over viral threats with the potential to significantly impact human health. Influenza is particularly alarming due to its history of causing pandemics and zoonotic reservoirs. In response, significant progress has been made toward the development of universal influenza vaccines, largely driven by the discovery of broadly neutralising antibodies (bnAbs), which have the potential to neutralise a broad range of influenza viruses, extending beyond the traditional strain-specific response. This could lead to longer-lasting immunity, re

Strategies of rational and structure-driven vaccine design for Arenaviruses.

The COVID-19 outbreak has highlighted the importance of pandemic preparedness for the prevention of future health crises. One virus family with high pandemic potential are Arenaviruses, which have been detected almost worldwide, particularly in Africa and the Americas. These viruses are highly understudied and many questions regarding their structure, replication and tropism remain unanswered, making the design of an efficacious and molecularly-defined vaccine challenging. We propose that structure-driven computational vaccine design will contribute to overcome these challenges. Computational …

International trade resilience and the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Covid-19 pandemic represents a low-probability, high-impact systemic risk that has severely disrupted international trade, reshaping the patterns of globalization. Drawing from the concept of supply chain resilience, which involves both the ability of a system to withstand an impact (robustness) and recover from it (responsiveness), we investigate country-level trade resilience during the 1st wave of the pandemic. By employing Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), we identify configurations of country-level factors, i.e., country profiles, based on their effectiveness in enge

Ebola lessons: Did prior epidemic experience protect against the spread of COVID-19 in Sierra Leone?

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted a re-examination of public health preparedness with an emphasis on lessons learned following the West African Ebola epidemic. However, much of this work focuses on technological solutions rather than social learning. Drawing upon anthropological work, this paper examines how Sierra Leoneans prepared for COVID-19 through a lens of "embodied epidemic memory." Findings reveal that while people felt more empowered to respond to COVID-19 due to their past experiences, traumatic memories from the Ebola outbreak also sparked logics of fear and avoidance, driven by m

Environmental Exposure: Effect on Maternal Morbidity and Mortality and Neonatal Health.

Environmental factors are important causes that impair global pregnancy outcomes and are, importantly, responsible for maternal morbidity and mortality. However, apart from the direct reasons for maternal deaths, mainly obstetric and neonatal complications, such factors are ignored or given less importance. The recent surge in research on the impact of various environmental factors on pregnancy outcomes suggests the need for immediate attention to such factors and device-specific policies to counter the situation. Moreover, the recent coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, global war

Kidney health for all: preparedness for the unexpected in supporting the vulnerable.

As the rate of natural disasters and other devastating events caused by human activities increases, the burden on the health and well-being of those affected by kidney disease has been immeasurable. Health system preparedness, which involves creating a resilient system that is able to deal with the health needs of the entire community during times of unexpected disruptions to usual care, has become globally important. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a heightened awareness of the amplification of negative effects on the renal community. Paradoxically, the complex medical needs of

AIDS, Avian flu, SARS, MERS, Ebola, Zika… what next?

Emerging infections have threatened humanity since times immemorial. The dramatic anthropogenic, behavioral and social changes that have affected humanity and the environment in the past century have accelerated the intrusion of novel pathogens into the global human population, sometimes with devastating consequences. The AIDS and influenza pandemics have claimed and will continue to claim millions of lives. The recent SARS and Ebola epidemics have threatened populations across borders. The emergence of MERS may well be warning signals of a nascent pandemic threat, while the potential for geog

Pandemic risk characterisation of zoonotic influenza A viruses using the Tool for Influenza Pandemic Risk Assessment (TIPRA).

A systematic risk assessment approach is essential for evaluating the relative risk of influenza A viruses (IAVs) with pandemic potential. To achieve this, the Tool for Influenza Pandemic Risk Assessment (TIPRA) was developed under the Global Influenza Programme of WHO. Since its release in 2016 and update in 2020, TIPRA has been used to assess the pandemic risk of 11 zoonotic IAVs across ten evaluation rounds. Notably, A(H7N9), A(H9N2), and A(H5) clade 2.3.4.4 viruses were re-evaluated owing to changes in epidemiological characteristics or virus properties. A(H7N9) viruses had the highest rel
