The autonomic nervous system controls the heart by dynamic recruitment and withdrawal of cardiac parasympathetic and sympathetic activities. These activities are generated by groups of sympathoexcitatory and vagal preganglionic neurones residing in a close proximity to each other within well-defined structures of the brainstem. This short essay provides a general overview and an update on the latest developments in our understanding of the central nervous origins and functional significance of cardiac vagal tone. Significant experimental evidence suggests that distinct groups of cardiac vagal

The discovery in 1990 that nitric oxide (NO) acts as a neuromodulator within the central and peripheral nervous system triggered intensive research which considerably extended our understanding how this factor regulates cardiovascular functions. In addition to its direct effects on blood vessels NO has additional targets at all levels of the neural control of circulation. When not scavenged by hemoglobin, NO is relatively stable and diffuses over large distances (> 500 microns) so that one NO-producing cell can influence several thousands of adjacent cells in vivo. In different brain regions,

The pathogenesis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) extends beyond intrinsic hepatic metabolic defects, involving critical bidirectional communication between the liver and the central nervous system-termed the liver-nervous system axis. This review proposes that dysregulation of this axis, characterised by sympathetic overactivation and parasympathetic hypofunction, is a central driver of MASLD onset and progression. We review the 'brain-to-liver' and 'liver-to-brain' signalling pathways, highlighting how their disruption forms a reciprocally detrimental feedb

We reveal unexpected origins of age induced departure from 1/f-type temporal scaling in healthy human heart rate. Contrary to the widely established view, we provide evidence that age induced dynamical imbalance in the autonomic control is not due to the emergent functional dominance of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), but due to emerging (age dependent) relative dynamic dominance of the parasympathetic nervous system function. In particular, we demonstrate that the age induced alterations of healthy heart rate dynamics asymptotically resemble those in so-called primary autonomic failure …

Fifty patients diagnosed with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) according to criteria of I. MacKleith et al (2000), mean age 71.1 +/- 6.1 years, have been studied. Severity of dimentia was evaluated using a battery of neuropsychological scales and tests. A state of autonomic nervous system function was determined during clinical examination, the results of which were used as a basis for the Scale of autonomic disorders severity, and by instrumental methods. Most of patients with DLB had autonomic disorders, such as orthostatic hypotension, heat intolerability, dryness of cutaneous epithelium and

Neurons in the central nervous system (CNS) communicate with peripheral organs largely via the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Through such communications, the sympathetic and parasympathetic efferent divisions of the ANS may affect thermogenesis and blood glucose levels. In contrast, peripheral organs send feedback to the CNS via hormones and autonomic afferent nerves. These humoral and neural feedbacks, as well as neural commands from higher brain centers directly or indirectly shape the metabolic function of autonomic neurons. Notably, recent developments in mouse genetics have enabled more

OBJECTIVE: Chronic pain associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) may reflect dynamic autonomic nervous system (ANS) effects. This pilot observational study tested the hypotheses that Characteristic Pain Intensity (CPI) scores correlated with 1) amplitude, 2) duration, and 3) power densities (amplitude/duration) of nocturnal ultradian cycling of the sympathetic and parasympathetic arms of the ANS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In accordance with institutional review board oversight and Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines, adult subjects gave infor

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain causes an imbalance of autonomic function, often indicated by reductions in parasympathetic heart rate variability (HRV) indices. This study aimed to investigate HRV measures among patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP), and healthy controls (HCs), and the influence of diabetes on these parameters.
METHODS: HRV measures, which are time- and frequency-derived noninvasive measures of autonomic function, were obtained from the electrocardiography (ECG) recordings. Moreover, deceleration capacity and periodic repolarization dynamics were assessed as measures of parasym

Both loneliness and autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity have been implicated as factors associated with young adult mental health and well-being. Recent work has begun to study how patterns of ANS functioning both at rest and in response to challenge may together predict mental health. For example, high parasympathetic activity at rest in combination with a decrease in parasympathetic activity in response to challenge predicts lower internalizing symptoms. Rarely have the joint influences of loneliness and patterns of ANS activity on young adult health been examined, and limited work has e

The liver, the largest organ in the human body, plays a multifaceted role in digestion, coagulation, synthesis, metabolism, detoxification, and immune defense. Changes in liver function often coincide with disruptions in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. The intricate interplay between the nervous and immune systems is vital for maintaining tissue balance and combating diseases. Signaling molecules and pathways, including cytokines, inflammatory mediators, neuropeptides, neurotransmitters, chemoreceptors, and neural pathways, facilitate this complex communication. They establish

The role of serotonin as a neurotransmitter in the vertebrate central and peripheral nervous systems has been extensively studied. In addition to its well-defined role in neurotransmission, serotonin has also been implicated in development. We have used in situ hybridization to localize 5-HT3 receptor mRNA in embryonic rat sections from Embryonic Day 10 (E10) to E18. Expression was first detected in the cranial sensory ganglia starting on E10. Expression was later detected in many regions within the developing CNS. In addition to the cranial sensory ganglia, expression was detected in many reg

INTRODUCTION: The spleen is hypothesized to play a role in the autonomic nervous system (ANS)-mediated control of host defence, but the neuroanatomical evidence for this assumption rests on a sparse number of studies, which mutually disagree with respect to the existence of cholinergic or vagal innervation.
METHODS: We conducted an immuno- and enzyme-histochemical study of the innervation of the human spleen using a complete hilum-embedding approach to ensure that only nerves that entered or left the spleen were studied, and that all splenic nerves were included in the sampled area. Furthermo

Neurohistochemical, electron-microscopic, pharmacological and urodynamic investigations have over the past 10 years led to a new concept of the innervation and function of the lower urinary tract. A survey is given of the peripheral innervation, transmitters and receptor functions in the parasympathetic, sympathetic, somatic and sensory innervation of the lower urinary tract. Based on this, rational principles of pharmacological treatment are outlined in the management of the most common dysfunctions of detrusor function and the urethral closure mechanism. Furthermore, a survey is given of dys

The distribution of pain originating in the sympathetic nervous system does not match the somatic segmental sensory distribution at the postganglionic level. The two types of distribution are separate and different. At the preganglionic level, fibers show typical segmental sensory distribution, which resembles but is not identical to somatic segmental sensory distribution. Instead, sympathetic pain has its own distribution along the vascular supply and some peripheral nerves. It cannot be called atypical in terms of somatic segmental sensory distribution. Several techniques are available to as

The parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system regulates the activity of multiple organ systems. Muscarinic receptors are G-protein-coupled receptors that mediate the response to acetylcholine released from parasympathetic nerves. Their role in the unconscious regulation of organ and central nervous system function makes them potential therapeutic targets for a broad spectrum of diseases. The M2 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (M2 receptor) is essential for the physiological control of cardiovascular function through activation of G-protein-coupled inwardly rectifying potassium c

Ulcerative colitis (UC), characterized by diffuse colonic inflammation and enteric nervous system (ENS) alterations, remains a therapeutic challenge. While the role of the parasympathetic nervous system in intestinal inflammation has been extensively documented, understanding of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) function in UC pathogenesis remains limited. Electroacupuncture (EA) at ST36 (Zusanli) is a widely used alternative therapy for UC, yet its regulatory effects on the ENS-particularly the SNS-and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we established a 2.5% dextran sulfate sodium…

Spinal cord injury (SCI) damages multiple structures at the lesion site, including ascending, descending, and propriospinal axons; interrupting the conduction of information up and down the spinal cord. Additionally, axons associated with the autonomic nervous system that control involuntary physiological functions course through the spinal cord. Moreover, sympathetic, and parasympathetic preganglionic neurons reside in the spinal cord. Thus, depending on the level of an SCI, autonomic function can be greatly impacted by the trauma resulting in dysfunction of various organs. For example, SCI c

The enteric nervous system of jawed vertebrates arises primarily from vagal neural crest cells that migrate to the foregut and subsequently colonize and innervate the entire gastrointestinal tract. Here we examine development of the enteric nervous system in the basal jawless vertebrate the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) to gain insight into its evolutionary origin. Surprisingly, we find no evidence for the existence of a vagally derived enteric neural crest population in the lamprey. Rather, labelling with the lipophilic dye DiI shows that late-migrating cells, originating from the trunk ne
