Brooke-spiegler syndrome with multiple scalp cylindromas and bilateral parotid gland adenomas.

A 62-year-old female presented with numerous soft tissue lesions of her scalp and bilateral preauricular region. Several of these have been biopsied or removed with a diagnosis of cylindromas. Cylindromas are benign tumors with a differentiation towards apocrine sweat glands that increase in number and size throughout life. Multiple scalp cylindromas may coalesce and cover the entire scalp, resulting in the "turban tumor." These are often associated with the autosomal dominant Brooke-Spiegler syndrome with coexistent facial trichoepitheliomas and spiradenomas. There is a very rare association

[Tumors of the nasal cavity in human immunodeficiency virus infection. A case of polyclonal lymphoid hyperplasia].

HIV virus infection is frequently accompanied by polyclonal or monoclonal lymphoid proliferations. The authors report the first case of a tumour of the cavum in a Haitian subject with HIV infection. This large tumour was associated with parotid swelling and a buccal and ocular sicca syndrome. Histological examination revealed Sjögren type of lympho-epithelial infiltration in the parotid and salivary glands. Biopsy of the cavum demonstrated lymphoid hyperplasia without a monoclonal component. There was no lymphoid proliferation outside of the ear, nose and throat region. The various benign and

[Merkel cell-carcinoma in the parotid gland--review of literature and case report].

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare malignant primary tumor of the skin, which develop typically in the elderly in the sun exposed areas of the skin, most commonly in the head and neck region. This tumor is very aggressive with a high rate of regional and distant metastases, marked propensity for local et regional recurrence, and very poor survival. Skin lesions are typically red or purple and present as a solitary dome-shaped nodule or indurated plaque. The recognition of such tumor in not difficult, but in same cases, when the tumor infiltrate deeper organs and structures it may cause some probl

Kimura's disease involving bilateral lacrimal glands and extraocular muscles along with ipsilateral face: A unique case report.

A 23 year female presented with bilateral recurrent swelling of eyelids along with ptosis and proptosis for last 3 years. She also had swellings over the right cheek, parotid gland, and retro auricular area along with regional lymphadenopathy. Systemic laboratory workup revealed raised serum IgE and a high peripheral eosinophil count. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed bilateral enlargement of extraocular muscles, lacrimal glands, and ipsilateral parotid gland. Excision biopsy of the retro-auricular lymph node was suggestive of Kimura's disease (KD). The patient responde

Malignant lymphoma of the parotid gland with monoclonal cytoplasmic immunoglobulin.

A 56-year-old Japanese man with a malignant lymphoma of the parotid gland was reported. The tumor was located in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland, and somewhat invaded the surrounding soft tissues, but the regional lymph nodes were not involved. Histologically, the tumor was composed of round cells with plasmacytoid configurations and small lymphocytes. The plasmacytoid cells showed eccentric nuclei with fairly marked irregularities and perinuclearr halos. In a large number of tumor cells, a monoclonal cytoplasmic immunoglobulin (CIg), IgG-Kappa type, was demonstrated by the PAP metho

Histopathological diversity in parotidectomy materials in Turkish population: clinicopathologic analysis and demographic features of 136 cases in a tertiary care hospital.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumours, which account for approximately 3% of head-neck cancers, are a heterogeneous group and thus it is difficult to identify their epidemiological characteristics. The aim of this study is to determine demographic features and histopathologic distribution of parotid neoplasms in a large sample from Turkey. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted retrospectively on 136 parotidectomy materials from operations between May 2009-May 2013. Age, gender, tumor diameter, histopathological diagnosis and surgical margin status were recorded. RESULTS: The benign ca

Carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland consisting of high-grade salivary duct carcinoma and keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma.

Carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) is a rare salivary gland malignancy that presents diagnostic difficulties partly because of its wide range of histologic presentations. We report a case of a 77-year-old man, who presented with a 6-year history of a parotid mass that had undergone rapid growth within weeks. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an infiltrative mass in the parotid gland, and the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy result was highly suspicious for carcinoma. Subsequent excision of the tumor demonstrated a poorly differentiated epithelial neoplasm consisting of keratinizing s

Salivary glands: applied anatomy and clinical correlates.

The major salivary glands include the paired parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands. Salivary glands act as accessory digestive glands and produce a secretion referred to as saliva. Saliva has lubricating, cleansing, digestive and antimicrobial properties. The parotid is the largest salivary gland and saliva is secreted into the mouth via the parotid duct (Stensen's duct). The submandibular gland lies inferior to the body of the mandible and is susceptible to sialolithiases. Drainage is via the duct of the submandibular gland (Wharton's duct) into the floor of the mouth on either side of

US in preoperative evaluation of parotid gland neoplasms.

Salivary gland neoplasms account for only 3% of all tumors of the head and neck area, but as they represent a wide variety of histological types, they are a big diagnostic challenge. The cornerstone of salivary gland neoplasm treatment, both for the benign and malignant lesions, is surgery. The main goal of the therapy is not only to achieve complete surgical tumor resection, but also to preserve adjacent structures (facial nerve, parapharyngeal space structures). Ultrasonography is an examination commonly used in the preoperative diagnosis of the lesions localized within salivary glands. Very

Facial nerve dissection in parotid surgery: a microscopic investigation study.

In parotid surgery, it is crucial to identify and preserve the facial nerve, which runs through the parotid gland. The purpose of this study was to histologically clarify two clinical questions: whether "superficial" and "deep" lobes exist anatomically and what are the structures surrounding facial nerve. Parotid gland tissues were obtained from dissection of donated cadavers. The gland was cut perpendicular to the facial nerve plane at 5 mm intervals, and the pieces were embedded in paraffin, thinly sliced, and stained. The morphology of the nerve was observed at each site, and the relationsh

High-Dose-Rate (192)Ir Brachytherapy Dose Verification: A Phantom Study.

BACKGROUND: The high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy might be an effective tool for palliation of dysphagia. Because of some concerns about adverse effects due to absorbed radiation dose, it is important to estimate absorbed dose in risky organs during this treatment. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to measure the absorbed dose in the parotid, thyroid, and submandibular gland, eye, trachea, spinal cord, and manubrium of sternum in brachytherapy in an anthropomorphic phantom. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To measure radiation dose, eye, parotid, thyroid, and submandibular gland, spine, and sternum, an an

Preservation of Salivary Function Following Extracapsular Dissection for Tumors of the Parotid Gland.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated salivary function after extracapsular dissection (ECD) compared with partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP) and classic superficial parotidectomy (CSP) of benign parotid gland tumors. The authors hypothesized that ECD would be superior to PSP and CSP in preserving postoperative salivary function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analyses were performed for 43 consecutive patients who underwent parotidectomies of benign parotid tumors performed by a single experienced surgeon. Clinical data and pre- and postoperative whole salivary flow rates were compared am

Neonatal rat submandibular gland protein SMG-A and parotid secretory protein are alternatively regulated members of a salivary protein multigene family.

Submandibular gland-A (SMG-A) is a major secretory product of the neonatal rat submandibular gland but is not synthesized by the acinar cells of the adult gland. The leucine-rich protein is a predominant product of the adult rat parotid gland. Preliminary data had indicated that the leucine-rich protein and SMG-A might be identical proteins whose expression was differently regulated in the parotid and submandibular salivary glands. cDNA clones encoding SMG-A and the leucine-rich protein were identified by homology to a major mouse parotid gland product, parotid secretory protein (PSP), and cha

Parotid Metastases from Head-Neck Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Prognostic Stratification.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCC) of the head and neck district are among the most common non melanocytic malignant skin carcinomas. The proposal to differentiate, within the N stage, parotid metastases from lateral cervical metastases, originates from the different prognostic value of the metastatic region involved. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 61 patients, surgically treated for parotid metastases from cSCC between January 2002 and June 2023, in four Departments of Surgery, to assess the geographic distribution of parotid metastases and to describe th

Hybrid intercalated duct lesion of the parotid: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Intercalated duct lesions (IDLs) are considered relatively benign and rare tumors of salivary glands, that were only described recently. Their histopathological appearance may range from ductal hyperplasia to encapsulated adenoma with hybrid patterns of both variants. It is thought that IDLs may be the precursor for malignant proliferations, therefore their correct diagnosis remains crucial for proper lesion management. It is the first reported IDL case arising from the accessory parotid gland (APG), which stands for less frequent but higher malignancy rate tumor developmental area
