Race-Dependent Association of Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms in TrkB Receptor in People Living with HIV and Depression.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated cognitive disorders (HAND) is characterized by impaired motor and intellectual functions, as well as mood disorders. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor and its receptor TrkB (or NTRK2) mediate the efficacy of antidepressant drugs. Genomic studies of BDNF/TrkB have implicated common single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the pathology of depression. In the current study, we investigated whether single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs1212171, rs1439050, rs1187352, rs1778933, rs1443445, rs3780645, rs2378672, and rs11140800) in the NTRK2 has a functional

A single nucleotide polymorphism in the HOMER1 gene is associated with sleep latency and theta power in sleep electroencephalogram.

Glutamate is the most excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and it is involved in the initiation and maintaining of waking and rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep. Homer proteins act in the trafficking and/or clustering of metabotropic glutamate receptors, and polymorphisms in the HOMER1 gene have been associated with phenotypes related to glutamate signaling dysregulation. In this study, we report the association of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the HOMER1 gene (rs3822568) with specific aspects of sleep in a sample of the Brazilian population. To accomplish this, 1,

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with pemphigus vulgaris: Potent markers for better treatment and personalized medicine.

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a rare autoimmune blistering disorder, which could affect both skin and mucosal surfaces. There is increasing evidence that genetics plays a critical role in PV development, severity and prognosis. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are the most common type of genetic variation among people and have been widely evaluated in most diseases. However, there are few studies regarding the roles of SNPs in the PV. Here, we reviewed both pathogenic and protective roles of the SNPs in non-HLA genes regarding the PV. Among the large number of studied SNPs, it was found tha

Association of single nucleotide polymorphisms in the CYBA gene with coal workers' pneumoconiosis in the Han Chinese population.

Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is caused by long-term exposure to inhaled coal dust; it is likely influenced by the interaction between environmental factors and multiple susceptibility genes, such as the CYBA (cytochrome b-245α polypeptide) gene that has recently been identified to be involved in the genetic susceptibility for several pulmonary diseases. The aim of this case-control study was to explore the association between CYBA gene polymorphisms and the development of CWP in coal miners belonging to the Han ethnic group in China. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs7195830, rs13

Possible Involvement of the CACNA1E Gene in Migraine: A Search for Single Nucleotide Polymorphism in Different Clinical Phenotypes.

OBJECTIVE: To search for differences in prevalence of a CACNA1E variant between migraine without aura, various phenotypes of migraine with aura, and healthy controls. BACKGROUND: Familial hemiplegic migraine type 1 (FHM1) is associated with mutations in the CACNA1A gene coding for the alpha 1A (Cav 2.1) pore-forming subunit of P/Q voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. These mutations are not found in the common forms of migraine with or without aura. The alpha 1E subunit (Cav 2.3) is the counterpart of Cav 2.1 in R-type Ca2+ channels, has different functional properties, and is encoded by the CACN

The role of histone modification and a regulatory single-nucleotide polymorphism (rs2071166) in the Cx43 promoter in patients with TOF.

Abnormal level of Cx43 expression could result in CHD. Epigenetic modification and disease-associated, non-coding SNPs might influence gene transcription and expression. Our study aimed to determine the role of histone modification and an rSNP (rs2071166) in the Cx43 promoter in patients with TOF. Our results indicate that H3K18ac bind to Cx43 promoter and that their levels are reduced in TOF patients relative to controls. The relationship between the non-coding SNP in the Cx43 gene and TOF patients was evaluated in 158 patients and 300 controls. The C allele of rs2071166 was confirmed to resu
