Attenuation of Retinal Endothelial Vasodilator Function in a Rat Model of Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Purpose: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is characterized by morphological abnormalities in retinal blood vessels, but how an episode of ROP affects vascular function remains to be fully elucidated. The purpose of the present study was to assess the distribution of pericyte/smooth muscle in retinal blood vessels and retinal vasodilator responses in a rat model of ROP.Methods: ROP was induced in rats by the subcutaneous injection of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor KRN633 (10 mg/kg) on postnatal day (P) 7 and P8. The distribution of pericyte/smoo

Robust Hidden Markov Model based intelligent blood vessel detection of fundus images.

In this paper, we consider the challenging problem of detecting retinal vessel networks. Precise detection of retinal vessel networks is vital for accurate eye disease diagnosis. Most of the blood vessel tracking techniques may not properly track vessels in presence of vessels' occlusion. Owing to problem in sensor resolution or acquisition of fundus images, it is possible that some part of vessel may occlude. In this scenario, it becomes a challenging task to accurately trace these vital vessels. For this purpose, we have proposed a new robust and intelligent retinal vessel detection techniqu

Retinal neuronal cell loss prevents abnormal retinal vascular growth in a rat model of retinopathy of prematurity.

A short-term blockade of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-mediated pathway in neonatal rats results in formation of severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)-like retinal blood vessels. The present study aimed to examine the role of retinal neurons in the formation of abnormal retinal blood vessels. Newborn rats were treated subcutaneously with the VEGF receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, KRN633 (10 mg/kg), or its vehicle (0.5% methylcellulose in water) on postnatal day (P) 7 and P8. To induce excitotoxic loss of retinal neurons, N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) was injected into the

Multimodal Retinal Imaging Findings in Williams-Beuren Syndrome.

A 17-year-old male patient diagnosed with Williams-Beuren syndrome presented with a gradual decline in vision in both eyes during a 3-year period. The ophthalmologic examination was notable for numerous loop-shaped tortuous vessels accompanying normal appearing retinal vessels and cystoid macular edema (CME). Mild foveal hypoplasia with a persistence of inner retinal layers was noted on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). OCT angiography showed that the abnormal vessels were not retinal vessels but were compatible with prepapillary vascular loops. The CME persisted despite repe

Retinal and choroidal intravascular spectral-domain optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE: To examine retinal and choroidal blood vessels using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). METHODS: Retrospective case series. RESULTS: Scans through retinal blood vessels in healthy subjects demonstrated vessel wall reflexes and a tri-layer profile of the blood column on longitudinal scans and a figure-of-eight configuration on cross-sectional scans. Intravascular reflectivity decreased with increasingly oblique angles of observation and was absent when blood flow was parallel to the line of sight. The high blood flow in the choroidal vessels in healthy subjects an

Bilateral central retinal vein occlusion in Waldenström's macroglobulinemia.

Waldenström's macroglobulinemia is a rare progressive neoplastic plasma cell disorder. Hyperviscosity is a major component in primary macroglobulinemia due to the excessive production of IgM paraprotein, a tumor by-product. The ocular manifestations of hyperviscosity can include congestion of the conjunctival vessels, dilation, segmentation and tortuosity of retinal vessels, retinal hemorrhages and serous retinal detachment. This case of bilateral central retinal vein occlusion represents an uncommon complication of Waldenström's macroglobulinemia.

Presumed tuberculous maculopathy.

A solitary choroidal mass underlying the macula of a patient with active pulmonary tuberculosis involuted under antituberculosis therapy. Angiographic study revealed large blood vessels within the mass and secondary changes in overlying retinal vessels. These retinal vessels, despite their ophthalmoscopic configuration, had no demonstrable anastomosis with the vascular tree of the choroid.

Monitoring the Patient with Retinal Angiopathy Associated with Hereditary Transthyretin Amyloidosis: Current Perspectives.

Retinal angiopathy associated with hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv), if untreated, may lead to irreversible vision loss. Our purpose was to systematically review the clinical and imaging features of retinal angiopathy associated with ATTRv and assemble a monitoring approach for these patients. All types of original research studies reporting clinical and imaging findings on retinal angiopathy associated with ATTRv were included. The most common clinical findings were tortuous retinal vessels, microaneurysms, retinal hemorrhages, sheathing of retinal vessels, whitish amyloid deposit

A software for quantitative measurement of vessel parameters in fundus images.

Retinal vessel is a unique structure that allows non-invasive observation of the microcirculatory system. Its pathological features and abnormal structural alterations are associated with cardiovascular and systemic diseases. Especially the abnormalities in caliber features, histology features, and geometric structure of retinal vessels are indicative of these diseases. However, the complex distribution and imperceptible characteristics of vasculature have hindered the measurement of vessel parameters. To this end, we design a new software (Retinal Vessel Parameters Quantitative Measurement So

A spectrum of retinal vasculature measures and coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We aimed to comprehensively describe a spectrum of retinal vessel measures including fractal dimension (Df) and their associations with indices of coronary artery disease (CAD) extent and severity, as well as hypertension and diabetes. METHODS: The Australian Heart Eye Study (AHES) is an observational study that surveyed 1680 participants presenting to a tertiary referral hospital for the evaluation of potential CAD by coronary angiography. A range of newer retinal vessel geometric measures (Df, curvature tortuosity, and branching angle) were quantified from retinal photo

Comparison between methods of vascular calibre characterization and measurement protocols: Influence of vessels number considered.

In recent years, retinal vascular calibre has emerged as an important non-invasive biomarker of microvascular health, widely used in ophthalmology for the detection and monitoring of various ocular diseases and has attracted growing interest in the study of various systemic diseases. However, significant methodological questions remain regarding the precise number of vessels to include in the calculation, as well as the agreement between the two most widely used formulas for estimating the retinal vascular calibre: the Parr-Hubbard formula and the Knudtson formula. The aim of this study is to

Retinal vasodilatation in the affected eye but reduced pressure autoregulation of both eyes in unilateral Coats' disease.

BACKGROUND: Coats' disease is characterized by vascular hyperpermeability, oedema and accumulation of exudates related to impairment of retinal vascular function. The background for the development of the disease is unknown, but it is likely that the study of diameter changes of retinal vessels may contribute to understanding the pathophysiology of the disease. METHODS: In seven patients with unilateral Coats' disease (mean age = 34.7 years, range: 11-69 years), the baseline diameter and reactivity of retinal vessels during an increase in the arterial blood pressure by isometric exercise and

Retinal angiogenesis: Development and pathophysiology.

Retinal angiogenesis is the process of new blood vessel formation within the retina, the light-sensitive tissue located at the back of the eye. It is a tightly regulated physiologic process essential for supplying oxygen and nutrients to retinal cells, supporting their metabolic needs, and maintaining overall retinal function. During retinal angiogenesis, new blood vessels sprout from pre-existing vessels in response to specific signals and cues within the retinal microenvironment. The process involves a series of coordinated events, including endothelial cell proliferation, migration, tube fo

Electroretinography and electro-oculography to localize abnormalities in early-stage inflammatory eye disease.

Electrophysiological investigations were performed in patients with inflammatory eye disease characterized by the presence of vitreous cells. The eyes were classified into four categories on the basis of fluorescein angiography: 1) no fluorescein leakage from retinal vessels, 2) fluorescein leakage from peripheral retinal vessels, 3) fluorescein leakage from the disc or macular vessels, and 4) fluorescein leakage from retinal vessels associated with pigment epithelial and choroidal changes. The electro-oculogram light rise was abnormally increased in the eyes in category 1, but it progressivel

[Mitral valve prolapse. A possible cause of retinal vascular occlusion in young patients].

Retinal vessel occlusion in the elderly is considered to be of arteriosclerotic etiology, but in young patients the reasons for retinal vessel occlusions are manifold and much more obscure. We report on five patients under the age of 45 years who had retinal artery occlusion or retinal vein obstruction. A detailed general investigation revealed nothing but an identical cardiac abnormality in all five cases: mitral valve prolapse (MVP). A potential explanation for the coincidence of retinal vessel occlusion and MVP might be local hyperaggregability of platelets generated by the prolapsing mitra
