Matching risk with treatment strategies in deep vein thrombosis management.

Successful and cost-effective prophylaxis against venous thromboembolism (VTE) depends on the availability of safe and effective antithrombotic methods, and the ability to match these to patients according to their level of thromboembolic risk. The last 20 years have seen significant developments in methods of thromboprophylaxis but, despite use of the best available methods, VTE still occurs in a significant proportion of patients. Efforts are now focused both on developing more effective pharmacological and physical methods, and improving assessment of thromboembolic risk in clinical practic

Spousal abuse/homicide. A current issue in health risk management.

Domestic homicides shocked Calgary in 1995. As the year drew to a close, statistics revealed that 5 of the city's 18 murders were at the han … risk-management approach of how the city dealt with this critical problem. With a greater focus on risk management strategies, along with public education and a greater interface with law enforcement agencies, forensic nurses will help reduce the sequelae of human violence; specifically, the fatalities of spousal abuse.

Osteoporosis in chronic liver disease: pathogenesis, risk factors, and management.

This article reviews osteoporosis (OP) in adults with chronic liver disease. OP in this setting is characterized in general by low bone turnover. The pathogenesis is unclear but is probably not related to vitamin D abnormalities. Patients at high risk of OP include those with evidence of cirrhosis, hypogonadism, overt calcium malabsorption, steroid therapy and choleostatic liver disease (particularly primary biliary cirrhosis). OP is best managed by adequate calcium intake, regular weight bearing exercise, and the avoidance of alcohol and tobacco smoking. There is probably no reason for vitami

Review article: Barrett's oesophagus--cancer risk, biology and therapeutic management.

Barrett's oesophagus is receiving increasing scrutiny as the rates of adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus rise. Because clinical features are not predictive of the presence of Barrett's oesophagus and most individuals with Barrett's oesophagus go undetected, a case can be made for surveillance endoscopy in patients with chronic reflux. Once Barrett's oesophagus is diagnosed patients should be entered into a surveillance programme despite lack of proof of efficacy. Scientific study of putative biological markers of increased risk has added dramatically to the understanding of the biology of the le

Cardiac gas embolism during carbon dioxide hysteroscopy: risk and management.

A relatively high number of fatal complications during hysteroscopy, where carbon dioxide was used as the uterine distension medium, plus a recent report on heart embolism during dog experiments with venous carbon dioxide infusion, audible by simple stethoscopic surveillance during the infusion, prompted the present study. Seventy women with no history of cardiac valvular disease or failure were observed during carbon dioxide hysteroscopy for the occurrence of the characteristic metallic heart sound caused by the intracardiac presence of free carbon dioxide during the heart contractions. In se

Coronary artery disease risk factor management in the hypertensive patient.

Recent advances in understanding the relation of risk factors to coronary artery disease (CAD) have initiated a change in the approach to managing the hypertensive patient. Reduction of elevated blood pressure still remains a major therapeutic priority. However, the risk of cardiovascular morbidity is also related to hypercholesterolemia, hyperuricemia, hyperglycemia, hyperfibrinogenemia and obesity; all aggravate the risk of CAD in the patient with high blood pressure. Life-style is also important: cigarette smoking, high alcohol consumption and lack of physical exercise all predispose to pre

Retrospective cohort study assessing cardiovascular risk reduction through intensive blood pressure management in high-risk patients.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension remains a major global risk factor for cardiovascular disease. While clinical trials suggest that lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) levels reduce cardiovascular risk, real-world data from high-risk patients remain limited. This study evaluated the association between achieved SBP levels and cardiovascular outcomes in a high-risk hypertensive population. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study from January 2022 to December 2024, including 180 high-risk hypertensive patients receiving treatment at a tertiary care facility. Patients were categorized based on

Layers of information: interacting constraints on breast cancer risk-management by high-risk African American women.

Objectives: To understand how various decision-making dynamics interact to shape the risk-management choices of African American women at high-risk of breast cancer, and to explore whether African American and White women have differential access to the information and interactions that promote proactive, confident risk-management behavior.Design: This paper draws on 50 original in-depth, semi-structured interviews with African American and White women at elevated risk of breast cancer. We used inductive grounded-theory methodology to explore the processes by which women make risk-management d

Principles of Food Safety and Toxicological Risk Assessment: Refining Hazards, Risk Management Communication, and Common Misconceptions.

Toxicology has evolved into a robust scientific discipline since the 16th century when Paracelsus, the "Father of Toxicology," established the basic yet fundamental principle that "the dose makes the poison." Toxicology is often first associated with the chemical and pharmaceutical industries; however, it plays an equally relevant role in evaluating food chemical safety, a field gaining increasing attention from both the scientific community and consumers. Though essential for human survival, foods can also pose risks, underscoring the relevance of the toxicological principle of "the dose make

Aesthetic interventions in patients with allergic skin diseases: Risk assessment and evidence-based preventive risk management.

The use of aesthetic dermatologic procedures in patients with underlying allergic and inflammatory skin diseases is on the rise, but specific safety considerations are often overlooked. Individuals with hypersensitivity to injectables, chronic inducible urticaria, allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, or hereditary angioedema may face an increased risk of adverse reactions triggered by mechanical trauma, injected substances, or disruption of the skin barrier. Adverse reactions to local anesthetics are predominantly non-IgE-mediated. Thus, preventive strategies should focus on selecti

When disaster management agencies create disaster risk: a case study of the US's Federal Emergency Management Agency.

PURPOSE: Disaster management agencies are mandated to reduce risk for the populations that they serve. Yet, inequities in how they function may result in their activities creating disaster risk, particularly for already vulnerable and marginalized populations. In this article, how disaster management agencies create disaster risk for vulnerable and marginalized groups is examined, seeking to show the ways existing policies affect communities, and provide recommendations on policy and future research. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The authors undertook a systematic review of the US disaster man

Factors Associated With High-Risk and Low-Risk Bone Stress Injury in Female Runners: Implications for Risk Factor Stratification and Management.

BACKGROUND: Bone stress injury (BSI) is a common overuse injury in active women. BSIs can be classified as high-risk (pelvis, sacrum, and femoral neck) or low-risk (tibia, fibula, and metatarsals). Risk factors for BSI include low energy availability, menstrual dysfunction, and poor bone health. Higher vertical load rates during running have been observed in women with a history of BSI. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to characterize factors associated with BSI in a population of premenopausal women, comparing those with a history of high-risk or low-risk BSI with those with

Drug users' sexual relationships and the social organisation of risk: the sexual relationship as a site of risk management.

Research on "risk behaviour" in the time of AIDS has emphasised how social relationships influence individuals' responses to risk. Yet the social relationship remains an under-utilised unit of analysis in risk behaviour research. Drawing on qualitative research with illicit drug users in London, this paper illustrates how drug users' sexual relationships act as key sites of risk management in individuals' drug use and everyday lifestyles. First, while recent research has almost exclusively focused on the dangers of disease transmission, our findings show that drug users perceived their sexual …

Suicide risk factors among veterans: risk management in the changing culture of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Suicide risk management in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system is particularly challenging because of both patient characteristics and aspects of the delivery system. The prototypical suicide-prone person is an older white male with alcoholism, depression, physical problems, and poor psychosocial support. This describes a large portion of the veteran patient population. Suicide risk factors that are common in VA patients include male gender, older age, diminished social environment support (exemplified by homelessness and unmarried status), availability and knowledge of …

Important potential risks not reflected in Japanese drug labeling: implications for risk management plan termination.

BACKGROUND: Risk management plans (RMPs) support lifecycle management of drug-related risks. In Japan, however, their use in clinical practice remains limited, and healthcare professionals often rely on the package insert for safety information. After RMP termination at re-examination, healthcare professionals may no longer readily identify unresolved risks absent from the package insert through either the package insert or the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) RMP source. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the extent to which important potential risks in RMPs are reflected in the pa…
