Describing reasons for loneliness among older people in Nigeria.

The rural-urban migration of family members often leads to a higher probability of older people living alone, and minimizes family/social networks, which increases old age loneliness. In this study, we describe the existence of loneliness among older adults in Nigeria and its factors, aiming to inform the development of interventions for reducing old age loneliness. We adopted a descriptive phenomenological approach to the qualitative design, purposefully selecting and conducting face-to-face interviews with 12 older adults aged 58-88. We analyzed the data using a Thematic Analysis. Results of

Multidimensional outcome of first-episode psychosis: a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the long-term outcomes of first-episode psychosis (FEP) among patients beyond symptomatic and functional remission. This study aimed to broaden the scope of outcome indicators by examining the relationships between 12 outcomes of FEP patients at 20.9 years after their initial diagnosis. METHODS: At follow-up, 220 out of 550 original patients underwent a new assessment. Twelve outcomes were assessed via semistructured interviews and complementary scales: symptom severity, functional impairment, personal recovery, social disadvantage, physical health, numbe

The Role of the Right Language Network and the Multiple-Demand Network in Verbal Semantics: Insights From an Activation Likelihood Estimation Meta-Analysis of 561 Functional Neuroimaging Studies.

Language processing has been traditionally associated with a network of fronto-parietal and temporal regions in the left hemisphere. Nevertheless, the 'right language network' (frontal, temporal and parietal regions homologous to the left language network) and the 'multiple-demand network' (MDN) are often involved in verbal semantic processing as well; however their role remains poorly understood. This is in part due to the inconsistent engagement of these latter two networks across linguistic tasks. To explore the factors driving the recruitment of the right language network and MDN during ve

The effects of maternal alcohol use disorders on childhood relationships and mental health.

PURPOSE: Despite millions of children living in the turmoil of their parents' active alcoholism or the aftermath of past abuse, research to date has not (1) provided a comprehensive examination of the effects of maternal alcohol use disorders (AUDs) on children's social ties outside of their relationships with parents, or (2) considered whether the number and quality of childhood social ties alter the effects of maternal AUDs on children's mental health. METHOD: Using data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Youth 1979 Children and Young Adults, analysis examined the influence of matern

Strategy for surgical management of ileocolonic anastomotic recurrence in Crohn's disease.

UNLABELLED: To understand how compliance develops both in everyday and corporate environments, it is crucial to understand how different mechanisms work together to shape individuals' (non)compliant behavior. Existing compliance studies typically focus on a subset of theories (i.e., rational choice theories, social theories, legitimacy theories, capacity theories, and opportunity theories) to understand how key variables from one or several of these theories shape individual compliance. The present study provides a first integrated understanding of compliance, rooted in complexity science, in

Social Identity Mapping as a Tool for Data Collection in Adolescent Recovery: A Mixed Methods Adaptation Study.

BACKGROUND: Social group memberships and group behaviors are pivotal in supporting or inhibiting adolescents' addiction recovery. Yet most research on social processes has relied on traditional surveys that cannot capture the complex nature of evolving social networks. Social Identity Mapping in Addiction Recovery (SIM-AR) asks respondents to create a visual representation, or map, of their social network, social groups, and social influences. The SIM-AR thus provides a novel, interactive, and detailed means to collect social network information, and does so in a way that is accessible and mea

COVID-19 Pandemic Impact on Substance Misuse: A Social Media Listening, Mixed Method Analysis.

The restrictive measures adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic modified some previously consolidated drug use patterns. A focus on social networks allowed drug users to discuss, share opinions and provide advice during a worldwide emergency context. In order to explore COVID-19-related implications on drug trends/behaviour and on most popular psychotropic substances debated, the focus here was on the constantly updated, very popular, Reddit social platform's posts and comments. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of r/Drugs and related subreddits, using a social media listening netnographic

Networks of persons with syphilis and at risk for syphilis in Louisiana: evidence of core transmitters.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Differences in sociodemographic attributes and healthcare access may explain differences in regional sexually transmitted disease rates but don't fully explain why syphilis persists disproportionately in certain populations. GOAL OF THIS STUDY: To understand the behavioral epidemiology of syphilis, we conducted a social network analysis of persons with syphilis and their contacts and developed and applied a definition of core transmitters. STUDY DESIGN: We interviewed 10 index persons with primary or secondary untreated syphilis and 80 of their named sexual and soc…

Is social support sometimes a mixed blessing?

BACKGROUND: Child behavioural problems in epilepsy originate from a poorly understood interplay between intrinsic, family and social factors. METHODS: We re-analysed data from a randomized controlled trial of antiepileptic treatment in rural India, using regression analysis to find risk factors for behavioural problems. RESULTS: Parental satisfaction with social support was positively and independently correlated with child behavioural problems (P=0.03). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest parents' interactions within their informal social support network, contrary to expectation, may increase

Early maltreatment, socioemotional competence, and parenting in adulthood: The moderating role of social network size.

Childhood maltreatment can lead to poor socioemotional development, which may undermine parental functioning in adulthood. Having a large social network of relatives and friends, however, might buffer the effects of childhood maltreatment on parents. This prediction was examined using prospective data from the Minnesota Longitudinal Study of Risk Adaptation (N = 173). Early childhood maltreatment was assessed prospectively at ages 0 - 5. Socioemotional competence during middle childhood and adolescence (ages 5 - 16) was assessed via teacher reports. Adult parenting was assessed using a semi-st

Sex differences in the association of social network satisfaction and the risk for type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: The role of an individual's social network satisfaction (SNS) in the association of social isolation or living alone and incident type 2 diabetes (T2D) is unclear. We assessed the association of SNS with incident T2D and analysed potential modifications of the SNS-T2D association by social isolation or living alone. METHODS: The study population (N = 6839 aged 25-74 years without diabetes at baseline) derived from the prospective population-based MONICA/KORA study (1989-2009). Social network satisfaction was assessed by a single item. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard rat
