Cortical activation patterns in generalized anxiety and major depressive disorders measured by multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are highly prevalent mental disorders in psychiatry, but their overlapping symptoms often complicate precise diagnoses. This study aims to explore differential brain activation patterns in healthy controls (HC), MDD, and GAD groups through functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during the verbal fluency task (VFT) to enhance the accuracy of clinical diagnoses. METHODS: This study recruited 30 patients with MDD, 45 patients with GAD, and 34 demographically matched HCs. Hemodynamic changes in the prefronta

Efficacy of near-infrared spectroscopy in diagnosing skin and soft tissue infections: A single-center retrospective study.

AIM: Skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) is classified as necrotizing fasciitis (NF) or cellulitis based on the invasion depth of the lesion. Cellulitis has a good prognosis and improves with conservative treatment, whereas NF has a poor prognosis with rapid progression requiring prompt debridement of the wound and intensive care control. Therefore, they should be differentiated quickly and accurately; however, a useful diagnostic method, except for the surgical test incision, remains to be established. This study aimed to verify the usefulness of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure

Rapid Identification of the Geographical Origin of the Chinese Mitten Crab (Eriocheir sinensis) Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is highly valued by consumers for its delicious taste and high nutritional content, including proteins and trace elements, giving it significant economic value. However, variations in taste and nutritional value among crabs from different regions lead to considerable price differences, fueling the prevalence of counterfeit crabs in the market. Currently, there are no rapid detection methods to verify the origin of Chinese mitten crabs, making it crucial to develop fast and accurate detection techniques to protect consumer rights. This study focused

Effects of ephedrine and phenylephrine on cerebral oxygenation: observational prospective study using near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy.

It has been reported that cerebral oxygenation (ScO2) measured by near infrared spectroscopy is maintained or increased by treatment with ephedrine, whereas almost all previous reports demonstrated that phenylephrine reduced ScO2. As the mechanism of the latter, the interference of the extracranial blood flow, that is extracranial contamination, has been suspected. Accordingly, in this prospective observational study, we utilized time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS), in which the effect of extracranial contamination is thought to be minimal, and evaluated whether the same result was obtained. We m

Comparing fixed-array and functionally-defined channel of interest approaches to infant functional near-infrared spectroscopy data.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is increasingly used to study brain function in infants, but the development and standardization of analysis techniques for use with infant fNIRS data have not paced other technical advances. Here we quantify and compare the effects of different methods of analysis of infant fNIRS data on two independent fNIRS datasets involving 6-9-month-old infants and a third simulated infant fNIRS dataset. With each, we contrast results from a traditional, fixed-array analysis with several functional channel of interest (fCOI) analysis approaches. In addition,

In vivo non-invasive near-infrared spectroscopy distinguishes normal, post-stroke, and botulinum toxin treated human muscles.

In post-stroke hemiparesis, neural impairment alters muscle control, causing abnormal movement and posture in the affected limbs. A decrease in voluntary use of the paretic arm and flexed posture during rest also induce secondary tissue transformation in the upper limb muscles. To obtain a specific, accurate, and reproducible marker of the current biological status of muscles, we collected visible (VIS) and short-wave Infrared (SWIR) reflectance spectra in vivo using a portable spectroradiometer (350-2500 nm), which provided the spectral fingerprints of the elbow flexors and extensors. We comp

Sport-related femoral artery occlusion detected by near-infrared spectroscopy and pedal power measurements: a case report.

OBJECTIVES: Approximately one in five professional cycling athletes will eventually develop a sport-related vascular problem. However, detecting such flow limitation is a diagnostic challenge as the sensitivity of the currently available standard diagnostic tools is limited. METHODS: Here we present an athlete with exercise-induced pain and weakness of the left leg. During the physical examination, pulsations of the femoral artery were palpable but less prominent. He was analyzed in an ongoing research project aimed at improving methods detecting sport-related leg flow limitations. RESULTS:

Utility of Near-infrared Spectroscopy Monitoring in the Management of Hyperperfusion Syndrome after Intracranial Carotid Artery Stenting.

Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (HPS) is a rare complication of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and stenting. There are only a few case reports about HPS after intracranial stenting, and its clinical course remains unclear. We report an unusual case of HPS after intracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) stenting. An 87-year-old woman underwent uneventful balloon angioplasty for the right intracranial ICA one year ago; then she presented with restenosis at the same arterial location. She then underwent an ICA stent placement procedure. Preoperative cerebral blood flow (CBF) studies revealed hemo

Perioperative near-infrared spectroscopy cerebral oxygen saturation in symptomatic pediatric hydrocephalus patients at risk for intracranial hypertension.

OBJECTIVE: The lack of a continuous, noninvasive modality for monitoring intracranial pressure (ICP) is a major obstacle in the care of pediatric patients with hydrocephalus who are at risk for intracranial hypertension. Intracranial hypertension can lead to cerebral ischemia and brain tissue hypoxia. In this study, the authors evaluated the use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) in symptomatic pediatric patients with hydrocephalus concerning for elevated ICP. METHODS: The authors evaluated the NIRS rSO2 trends in pediatric patients pres

Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy to assess social information processing in poor urban Bangladeshi infants and toddlers.

Children living in low-resource settings are at risk for failing to reach their developmental potential. While the behavioral outcomes of growing up in such settings are well-known, the neural mechanisms underpinning poor outcomes have not been well elucidated, particularly in the context of low- and middle-income countries. In this study, we measure brain metabolic responses to social and nonsocial stimuli in a cohort of 6- and 36-month-old Bangladeshi children. Study participants in both cohorts lived in an urban slum and were exposed to a broad range of adversity early in life including ext

Near-infrared spectroscopy monitoring in a pre-hospital trauma patient cohort: An analysis of successful signal collection.

BACKGROUND: Noninvasive monitoring of cerebral physiology could potentially guide pre-hospital management of patients with traumatic injuries. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is one such modality but the consistency of monitoring performance remains unclear. This study assessed the proportion of successful signal collection during pre-hospital care. METHODS: As part of a prospective observational study, an independent study observer placed three sensors for a Nonin 7610 NIRS device; two on the forehead and one on the forearm. NIRS records were analysed for time of adequate monitoring signal

Cortical Speech Processing in Postlingually Deaf Adult Cochlear Implant Users, as Revealed by Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the feasibility of using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to image cortical activity in the language areas of cochlear implant (CI) users and to explore the association between the activity and their speech understanding ability. Using fNIRS, 15 experienced CI users and 14 normal-hearing participants were imaged while presented with either visual speech or auditory speech. Brain activation was measured from the prefrontal, temporal, and parietal lobe in both hemispheres, including the language-associated regions. In response to visual spe

Effective Connectivity in Response to Posture Changes in Elderly Subjects as Assessed Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

This study aims to assess the posture-related changes in frequency-specific effective connectivity (EC) in elderly subjects by coupling function measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The fNIRS signals were continuously recorded from the bilateral prefrontal cortex (PFC), motor cortex (MC), and occipital lobe (OL) in 17 healthy elderly and 19 healthy young subjects during sitting and standing states. EC was calculated based on Dynamic Bayesian inference in one low frequency interval I: 0.052-0.145 Hz and one very low frequency interval II: 0.021-0.052 Hz. Results show th

Prefrontal cortical activity associated with visual stimulus categorization in non-human primates measured with near-infrared spectroscopy.

In biomedical research of brain dysfunction in psychiatric disorders, utilization of animal models is essential. However, translation of findings in animal models into the realm of human clinical conditions requires reliable biomarkers that are assessed with the methods mutually employed in animal models and human patients. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a functional neuroimaging technique that has now been widely utilized in human basic and clinical research. However, its application to animal models has been barely conducted. In this study, we developed the method to measure neural act
