Optical coherence tomography indices of structural retinal pathology in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Prior optical coherence tomography (OCT) studies of schizophrenia have identified thinning of retinal layers. However, findings have varied across reports, and most studies have had serious methodological limitations. To address unresolved issues, we determined whether: (1) retinal thinning in schizophrenia occurs independently of comorbid medical conditions that affect the retina; (2) thinning is independent of antipsychotic medication dose; (3) optic nerve parameters are abnormal in schizophrenia; and (4) OCT indices are related to visual and cognitive impairments common in schiz

Radiological and optical coherence tomography aspects in external root resorption.

Pathological external root resorption is a process by which the hard tooth substance is lost because of action of different local irritative or systemic factors. Six forms of external root resorption are described: surface external root resorption, inflammatory external root resorption, replacement external root resorption, invasive external cervical root resorption, ankylosis and transient apical breakdown. The objective of the study was to establish the prevalence of the pathological root resorption in a retrospective radiological study, to highlight radiological aspects of external root res

Does the Stage of Keratoconus Affect Optical Coherence Tomography Measurements?

PURPOSE: To employ optical coherence tomography (OCT) to examine the relationship of changes in the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and macular thickness as well as ganglion cell (GC) parameters with the stage of keratoconus (KC), and to compare these changes with a control group. METHODS: A total of 84 eyes of 68 patients with KC and 29 eyes of 29 normal age-matched subjects underwent RNFL, macular thickness measurements, and ganglion cell analysis using Cirrus high-definition (HD) OCT. Patients with KC were classified according to the Amsler-Krumeich Classification. The measurements were a

Advances of optical coherence tomography in myopia and pathologic myopia.

The natural course of high-axial myopia is variable and the development of pathologic myopia is not fully understood. Advancements in optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology have revealed peculiar intraocular structures in highly myopic eyes and unprecedented pathologies that cause visual impairment. New OCT findings include posterior precortical vitreous pocket and precursor stages of posterior vitreous detachment; peripapillary intrachoroidal cavitation; morphological patterns of scleral inner curvature and dome-shaped macula. Swept source OCT is capable of imaging deeper layers in the

Safety of optical coherence tomography in pediatric heart transplant patients.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) is a crucial problem after heart transplantation, in adults as well as in children. CAV is the main risk factor for a reduced long-term graft survival. The early diagnosis and treatment of CAV is essential for a successful long-term preservation of the donor heart. However, asymptomatic progression of CAV and concentric hyperplasia of the coronary arteries may complicate the early diagnosis by conventional measures. Intravascular imaging, such as intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography (OCT), enables the diagnosis of early stag

[Use of optical coherence tomography based lacrimal meniscometry in dacryology].

UNLABELLED: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) based lacrimal meniscometry is currently the most accurate method used to determine dimensions of tear meniscus. According to related literature, the latter gets reliably reduced after treatment of nasolacrimal duct obstructions. However, the relationship between morphometric parameters of tear meniscus and the intensity of epiphora has not been established. Even an adequate study parameter has not been yet identified. AIM: To investigate the significance of OCT based lacrimal meniscometry in determining the extent of insufficiency of lacrimal dr

Retinal Imaging of Infants on Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography.

Spectral domain coherence tomography (SD OCT) has become an important tool in the management of pediatric retinal diseases. It is a noncontact imaging device that provides detailed assessment of the microanatomy and pathology of the infant retina with a short acquisition time allowing office examination without the requirement of anesthesia. Our understanding of the development and maturation of the infant fovea has been enhanced by SD OCT allowing an in vivo assessment that correlates with histopathology. This has helped us understand the critical correlation of foveal development with visual

Ethnic differences in trabecular meshwork height by optical coherence tomography.

IMPORTANCE: Differences in ocular anatomy may contribute to ethnic differences in glaucoma risk. Because the trabecular meshwork (TM) plays an important role in aqueous outflow, its anatomy in relation to at-risk populations may provide insight into a potential contributor to elevated intraocular pressure and thus to probability of glaucoma development. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether differences exist in TM height between ethnic groups. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective study took place from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2013. Adult patients who self-reported as being

Three-dimensional spectral domain optical coherence tomography in vitreomacular traction.

Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) is a non-invasive tool providing unprecedented imaging and analysis of vitreomacular interface. Two cases of vitreomacular traction were analysed by advanced three-dimensional (3D) SD-OCT imaging. En-face OCT permitted localisation of the exact point of attachment of vitreous to retina. A comprehensive view of the surface topography and anatomical configuration of vitreomacular affection was revealed by 3D imaging with segmentation technique. Macular change analysis programme revealed progression to full-thickness macular hole in the second

In vivo imaging of mouse cochlea by optical coherence tomography.

HYPOTHESIS: Cochlear pathology can be evaluated in living animals using optical coherence tomography (OCT). BACKGROUND: The current imaging methods available for the detailed analysis of cochlear pathology in a clinical setting provide only limited information. Thus, a cochlear imaging modality with high definition is needed for improving the diagnosis of cochlear pathology. OCT has been used in other fields for obtaining high-resolution subsurface images, and its use could potentially be extended to the analysis of cochlear pathogenesis. METHODS: Slc26a4(-/-) mice, which generate endolympha

Imaging pancreatobiliary ductal system with optical coherence tomography: A review.

An accurate, noninvasive and cost-effective method of in situ tissue evaluation during endoscopy would be highly advantageous for the detection of dysplasia or early cancer and for identifying different disease stages. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive, high-resolution (1-10 μm) emerging optical imaging method with potential for identifying microscopic subsurface features in the pancreatic and biliary ductal system. Tissue microstructure of pancreaticobiliary ductal system has been successfully imaged by inserting an OCT probe through a standard endoscope operative channel. H
