Disseminated neurocysticercosis presenting as isolated acute monocular painless vision loss.

Neurocysticercosis, the most common parasitic infection of the nervous system, is known to affect the brain, eyes, muscular tissues and subcutaneous tissues. However, it is very rare for patients with ocular cysts to have concomitant cerebral cysts. Also, the dominant clinical manifestation of patients with cerebral cysts is either seizures or headache. We report a patient who presented with acute monocular painless vision loss due to intraocular submacular cysticercosis, who on investigation had multiple cerebral parenchymal cysticercal cysts, but never had any seizures. Although such a visio

Ocular Migraine With Amaurosis Fugax of the Left Eye: A Case Report.

In amaurosis fugax, there is a sudden loss of vision in one eye. Patients gain their vision after a few minutes. The most common underlying cause is atherosclerosis of the internal carotid artery. Other underlying causes include vasospasm of the internal carotid artery, which leads to hypoperfusion and is seen in vasculitis, ocular migraines, and systemic lupus erythematosus. In this case study, a 44-year-old male with a past medical history of migraine with aura presented to the emergency room with transient vision loss in the left eye, which lasted for two minutes. A computed tomography scan

Bilateral Optic Atrophy and Epiretinal Membranes: An Atypical Presentation of Ocular Tuberculosis.

A 15-year-old boy presented himself to the retina clinic with a six-year history of poor vision in both eyes. Ocular symptoms started with deterioration in the vision of both eyes associated with ocular pain. There was no history of antecedent trauma, headaches, seizures, or loss of consciousness. The general and systemic examinations were normal. On ocular examination, the corrected visual acuity was 6/24 and 6/6 in the right and left eyes, respectively. The anterior segment examination was normal except for a relative afferent pupillary defect in the right eye. Examination of the posterior s

Therapeutic use of mini-scleral lenses in a patient with Graves' ophthalmopathy.

Patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy can be very challenging to manage secondary to the complex nature of their disease presentation. Patients may present with a variety of ocular findings including: lid retraction, periorbital and lid swelling, chemosis, conjunctival hyperemia, proptosis, optic neuropathy, restrictive myopathy, exposure keratopathy and/or keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Mini-scleral and scleral lens designs have been important in the management of irregular and regular corneas, and in the therapy of ocular surface diseases. We present here the case of a 48-year-old Caucasian male

Visual acuity, residual amblyopia and ocular pathology in a screened population of 12-13-year-old children in Sweden.

PURPOSE: To establish the distribution of visual acuity and the prevalence of residual amblyopia and other ocular disorders in a vision-screened population group of 12-13-year-old children. METHODS: In total 1046 children were examined in a field study in Sweden. The examination included visual acuity, stereopsis, cover testing, red reflex, refractive retinoscopy and examination of the posterior pole. In selected cases VEP was also performed. RESULTS: Visual acuity > or =1.0 in at least one eye was present in 98% of cases. Residual amblyopia (< or =0.5) was found in 1.1% of the population. M

Spectral Transmittance of the Ocular Media of Eight Seabird Species from Two Orders: Procellariiformes (Petrels and Shearwaters) and Suliformes (Gannets and Shags).

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Many, but not all, bird taxa possess the ability to see ultraviolet (UV) light, but it is currently unclear the extent this ability exists among seabirds. Measuring retinal photoreceptor sensitivity presents many challenges, but the penetration of UV light through the ocular media (ocular transmittance) is a good proxy for UV vision. METHODS: Here, we document the ocular transmission of light wavelengths using spectrometry through the eyes of eight Procellariiform and Suliform seabird species found in Aotearoa New Zealand. RESULTS: We report that the eyes of most

Evidence of visual learning and wavelength differential responses in three podocopids (Crustacea: Ostracoda).

BACKGROUND: Ostracods are small bivalved crustaceans that inhabit a wide range of aquatic environments, from fully marine to brackish and freshwater systems. All non-marine species belong to the order Podocopida. The sensory biology and behavioral capacities of ostracods remain poorly understood, even though these traits play pivotal roles in habitat exploration, food searching, mate recognition, and predator avoidance. In particular, studies addressing vision and learning ability are still scarce. Although visual structures in ostracods are often reduced or simplified, they exhibit considerab

Conscious vision in fish.

We challenge Fleming and Michel's arguments that aquatic animals do not have conscious vision. Focusing on fish, we suggest - on the basis of what we know about their cognition and evolution - that most fish are likely to have conscious vision, which evolved well before the transition to a largely terrestrial habitat. We end by clarifying the difference between our model-based, learning-driven view of the evolution of animal consciousness and Fleming and Michel's view.

The mysterious middlemen making your vision pop: understanding the function of amacrine cells.

In many brain regions, inhibitory interneurons represent a highly diverse class of cells, and the specific roles of most subtypes remain unclear. This diversity is particularly striking in the retina, where amacrine cells, the primary inhibitory interneurons, form the most diverse population, with nearly 67 subtypes in mice. Recent methodological advances have provided unprecedented insight into this complexity. Techniques such as transcriptomics, connectomics and targeted electrophysiological recordings have made it possible to isolate and characterize individual amacrine cell types. Here, we

Retinoid dynamics in vision: from visual cycle biology to retina disease treatments.

Light perception is a biological process that facilitates a profound interaction between the external world and the internal functions of living organisms. It begins with the absorption of photons with specialized visual pigments that contain vitamin A-derived chromophores. The light energy triggers the photoisomerization of the visual chromophore, initiating a cascade of signaling events that ultimately convert light into electrical signals interpreted as vision. However, the sustainability of vision relies on the continuous supply of the visual chromophore, which is maintained through light-

When the brain talks back to the eye.

The state of our brain shapes what we see, but how early in the visual system does this start? A new study in PLOS Biology shows that brain state-dependent release of histamine modulates the very first stage of vision in the retina.

Eye-Mimicked Neural Network Composed of Photosensitive Neural Spheroids with Human Opsin Proteins.

An in vitro model, composed of the short-wavelength human opsins and rhodopsins, is created. Two types of photosensitive neural spheroids are transfected for selective reaction under bluish-purple and green lights. These are employed to two devices with intact neuron and neural-spheroid to study the interaction. By photostimulation, the photosensitive spheroid initiated photoactivation, and the signal generated from its body is transmitted to adjacent neural networks. Specifically, the signal traveled through the axon bundle in narrow gap from photosensitive spheroid to intact spheroid as an e

Kinesthetic Feedback for Understanding Program Execution.

To better prepare future generations, knowledge about computers and programming are one of the many skills that are part of almost all Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematic programs; however, teaching and learning programming is a complex task that is generally considered difficult by students and teachers alike. One approach to engage and inspire students from a variety of backgrounds is the use of educational robots. Unfortunately, previous research presents mixed results on the effectiveness of educational robots on student learning. One possibility for this lack of clarity may b

Eye development in the four-eyed fish Anableps anableps: cranial and retinal adaptations to simultaneous aerial and aquatic vision.

The unique eyes of the four-eyed fish Anableps anableps have long intrigued biologists. Key features associated with the bulging eye of Anableps include the expanded frontal bone and the duplicated pupils and cornea. Furthermore, the Anableps retina expresses different photoreceptor genes in dorsal and ventral regions, potentially associated with distinct aerial and aquatic stimuli. To gain insight into the developmental basis of the Anableps unique eye, we examined neurocranium and eye ontogeny, as well as photoreceptor gene expression during larval stages. First, we described six larval stag

Visible light induced ocular delayed bioluminescence as a possible origin of negative afterimage.

The delayed luminescence of biological tissues is an ultraweak reemission of absorbed photons after exposure to external monochromatic or white light illumination. Recently, Wang, Bókkon, Dai and Antal (2011) [10] presented the first experimental proof of the existence of spontaneous ultraweak biophoton emission and visible light induced delayed ultraweak photon emission from in vitro freshly isolated rat's whole eye, lens, vitreous humor and retina. Here, we suggest that the photobiophysical source of negative afterimage can also occur within the eye by delayed bioluminescent photons. In othe

Visuomotor system uses target features unavailable to conscious awareness.

After lesions to primary visual cortex, patients lack conscious awareness of visual stimuli. Interestingly, however, some retain the ability to make accurate judgments about the visual world (i.e., so-called blindsight). Similarly, damage to inferior occipitotemporal regions of cortex (e.g., lateral occipital cortex) can result in an inability to perceive object properties while retaining the ability to act on them (i.e., visual form agnosia). In the present work, we demonstrate that the ability to interact with objects in the absence of conscious awareness is not isolated to those with restri
