Polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated catheters decrease choroid plexus adhesion and improve flow/pressure performance in an in vitro model of hydrocephalus.

PURPOSE: Proximal catheter obstruction is the leading cause of ventricular shunt failure in pediatric patients. Our aim is to evaluate various types of shunt catheters to assess in vitro cellular adhesion and obstruction. METHODS: Four catheter types were tested: (1) antibiotic and impregnated, (2) barium-stripe polyvinylpyrrolidone coated (PVP), (3) barium-stripe, and (4) barium-impregnated. Catheters were seeded with choroid plexus epithelial cells to test cellular adhesion and inoculated with the same cells to test flow/pressure performance under choroid plexus growth conditions. Ventricul

Assisted reproductive technology outcomes and gene expression in unexplained infertility patients.

Blood pressure gradient (ΔP) across an aortic coarctation (CoA) is an important measurement to diagnose CoA severity and guide treatment. While invasive cardiac catheterization is the clinical gold-standard for measuring ΔP, it requires anesthesia and does not capture the effects of daily activity or exercise, potentially underestimating the disease's functional burden. This study aimed to identify patients with functionally significant CoA by evaluating exercise-induced ΔP using a hybrid mock circulatory loop (HMCL). Patient-specific aorta geometries (N = 5) of patients with CoA were generate

Digital Laser-Sintered Expander in Adolescent Patient with Hyperdontia and Molar Impaction.

Supernumerary teeth can have normal or abnormal morphologic structure and characteristics, and their impacted form is diagnosed usually during X-ray examinations. In this case report, the presented patient is a 16-year-old female with anterior and right posterior open bite and bilateral posterior crossbite, upper right supernumerary paramolar, and impacted second and third molars. The paramolar development was the reason for the asymmetric growth of the alveolar bone in the upper jaw. The development of the bone is connected with the development of the teeth, and one additional tooth leads to

Effect of Acid-Labile Protecting-Group Structure on the Micrometer-Scale Patterning Performance of Core-First RAFT-Synthesized Three-Arm Photoresists.

Controlling dimensional fidelity and line-edge roughness is important in chemically amplified negative-tone imaging. In this study, two three-arm random terpolymers containing different acid-labile protecting groups were synthesized via core-first reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization to examine the influence of protecting-group structure within a common star-polymer framework. HTT 334 contained tert-butyl methacrylate (t-BMA), whereas HTM 334 contained 2-methyl-2-adamantyl methacrylate (MAMA). The two polymers exhibited comparable molecular weights and composi

The Drug-Eluting Resorbable Scaffold in the Superficial Femoral Artery: 2-year Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In-stent restenosis remains a challenge in superficial femoral artery (SFA) treatment, though a great efficacy has been shown in drug-eluting stents (DESs). The concept of "leave nothing behind" has further driven interest to bioresorbable vascular stents. Some drug-eluting resorbable scaffold (DRS) has shown promise in coronary artery and SFA. We brought a first in-human study of DRS for treatment of peripheral artery disease (PAD) involving the de novo lesions in SFA. METHODS: This DRS system is a device-drug combination consisting of a paclitaxel-eluting poly (L-lactide-co-ε-ca

3D-printed individualized tooth-borne tissue retraction devices compared to conventional dental splints for head and neck cancer radiotherapy: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite modern treatment techniques, radiotherapy (RT) in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) may be associated with high rates of acute and late treatment-related toxicity. The most effective approach to reduce sequelae after RT is to avoid as best as possible healthy tissues and organs at risk from the radiation target volume. Even small geometric changes can lead to a significant dose reduction in normal tissue and better treatment tolerability. The major objective of the current study is to investigate 3D printed, tooth-borne tissue retraction devices (TRDs) compared to co
