Impact of three-dimensional heart models on surgical planning and outcomes in congenital heart disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease surgery includes intricate structures that are perhaps hard to completely understand by traditional two-dimensional shapes. Individualised, centre-based three-dimensional (3D) heart models may enhance structural imaging and surgical preparation, while data on their medical effect continue to be unpredictable and uneven. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the impact of 3D heart simulations on surgical preparation and outcomes in congenital cardiac disease. OBJECTIVE: To assess the successful outcomes of patient-centred 3D cardiac simulations

Task-specific computational fluid dynamics evaluation of multi-outlet extrusion nozzles for bioprinting.

INTRODUCTION: Extrusion bioprinting is transitioning from proof-of-concept demonstrations toward repeatable, manufacturing-style workflows, yet nozzle design remains a key bottleneck. Within compact, opaque channels, bioinks experience geometry-driven shear, pressure losses, and flow redistribution that directly affect cell viability, extrusion stability, and deposition uniformity. Multi-outlet nozzles offer increased throughput by splitting a single feed into parallel filaments, but often suffer from flow imbalance and junction-induced shear hotspots. As a result, nozzle selection is still la

Advances in 3D Bioprinting for Scaffold-Based and Scaffold-Free Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has emerged as a versatile biofabrication strategy that enables the precise, spatiotemporally controlled co-deposition of living cells, biomaterials, and bioactive agents, including growth factors, cytokines, and extracellular matrix (ECM) components, into geometrically defined 3D constructs. By translating digital design models derived from computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or computational modeling directly into physical tissue architectures, 3D bioprinting facilitates the assembly of hierarchically organized constructs that closel

A review of bioengineering techniques applied to breast tissue: Mechanical properties, tissue engineering and finite element analysis.

Female breast cancer was the most prevalent cancer worldwide in 2020, according to the Global Cancer Observatory. As a prophylactic measure or as a treatment, mastectomy and lumpectomy are often performed at women. Following these surgeries, women normally do a breast reconstruction to minimize the impact on their physical appearance and, hence, on their mental health, associated with self-image issues. Nowadays, breast reconstruction is based on autologous tissues or implants, which both have disadvantages, such as volume loss over time or capsular contracture, respectively. Tissue engineerin

Evaluation of material effects on three-dimensional cultured skeletal muscle cells for biohybrid robots.

Robots are traditionally confined to controlled environments such as factories, where human interactions are limited. However, the demand for robots that are capable of collaborating with humans is increasing. To achieve symbiosis, integrating the physical flexibility and environmental adaptability of living organisms into robotic systems is crucial. An example of such a robot is a biohybrid robot driven by three-dimensional (3D) cultured skeletal muscle cells. These muscle cells, which are composed of myoblasts and an extracellular matrix (ECM), contract and generate force in response to exte

Endovascular treatment of thoracoabdominal aortic pathologies using 3D printer-assisted physician-modified stent-grafts.

BACKGROUND: Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs) and dissections are among the most challenging vascular diseases. Endovascular interventions have gained prominence in the treatment of these diseases in recent years. However, the frequent involvement of the visceral or supra-aortic artery ostia in the proximal or distal landing zone increases the complexity of the procedure. Therefore, several techniques have been developed to address this challenge. In this study, we present our experience with thoracic endovascular aortic repair using three-dimensional (3D) printer-assisted physician-mo

A Novel 3D Visualized Operative Procedure in the Single-Stage Complete Repair With Unifocalization of Pulmonary Atresia With Ventricular Septal Defect and Major Aortopulmonary Collateral Arteries.

OBJECTIVES: Pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries (PA/VSD/MAPCAs) is a relatively rare, complex, and heterogeneous congenital heart disease. As one of the effective treatments, the midline unifocalization strategy still remains complicated and challenging due to the diverse forms of MAPCAs and pulmonary arteries. The purpose of this study is to summarize our experience of a novel three-dimensional (3D) visualized operative procedure in the single-stage complete repair with unifocalization and to clarify the benefits it may bring to us. Soft, Deformable Polyurethane-Boronic Acid Nanoparticles as Dynamic Cross-Linkers to Construct 3D-Bioprintable Hydrogels.

Addition of nanoparticles in a hydrogel can enhance its three-dimensional (3D) printability. However, the role of soft, deformable nanoparticles in the 3D printability of a hydrogel network has not been explored so far. In this study, two boronic acid-functionalized polyurethane (PU) nanoparticles PUB and PUB' are synthesized as soft dynamic nanocross-linkers to construct a 3D bioprintable hydrogel. The soft segment of PUB consists of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) solely while that of PUB' consists of PCL, poly(d,l-lactide), and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) in a 0.7/0.2/0.1 molar ratio. Small-angle X-
