We report a previously healthy 24 years old woman, that presented with an acute abdomen due to a mesenteric vasculitis. The diagnostic study demonstrated the presence of a systemic lupus erythematosus with a type IV nephropathy. Posterior to intestinal resection and immunosuppressive therapy, the patient had a satisfactory evolution.

We report a 41 years old man admitted with a tender goiter, fever, thyrotoxic manifestations and atrial fibrillation. BACKGROUND: The maintenance of permeable vascular accesses in chronic hemodialysis patients is a major challenge.
AIM: To report our experience in the percutaneous treatment of venous stenoses of arteriovenous fistulae for hemodialysis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied retrospectively 48 patients with arteriovenous fistulae stenoses, that were followed during 24 months. When the fistulography disclosed an stenosis, a percutaneous transluminal angioplasty was performed. If indicated, an intravascular stent was installed or thrombolysis was done. These procedures were repeated as needed.

Cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa is a benign form of the disease with cutaneous involvement and occasional systemic manifestations. We report a 51 years old man presenting with malaise, arthralgia, myalgia and nodular, erythematous and painful skin lesions in both legs. The pathological study of these lesions showed a polyarteritis. During hospital stay there was a mild remission of the disease without treatment, but its reappearance during follow lead to the use of prednisone.

The most common superficial mycosis caused by Trichosporon beigelii is white piedra. We report a 18 years old male that had in several hairs of the scalp, white-yellowish nodules of 1 mm diameter, agglutinated or forming chains, even forming threads, with a greasy aspect. Trichosporon beigelii was identified in cultures. Oral and topical antimycotics were prescribed and the patient was lost from follow up.

The aim of this work was to study the usefulness of CSF adenosine deaminase determination in the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis and determine if the proposed cutoff value of 7.1 i.u./ml had the better sensitivity and specificity. AIM: To assess immediate and late results of Parks operation in the treatment of severe radiation rectitis.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Retrospective review of clinical histories of 35 patients with uterine cervical cancer, 5 with endometrial cancer and one with vaginal cancer that received radiotherapy. Two years as a mean after radiotherapy, 14 women had rectal bleeding, 19 fistulae, 7 stenosis and 1 a rectal ulceration. All were initially treated with a discharge colostomy and after a mean interval of 1.6 years, a Parks operation was performed.

We report a young homosexual male with AIDS that presented a systemic Cryptococcus neoformans infection. He had skin, lymph node and colonic involvement but the central nervous system was spared. We report nine patients with acute mitral regurgitation secondary to post-infarction papillary rupture operated between 1980 and 1992. Seven cases had posterior papillary muscle rupture. All patients were in critical conditions with pulmonary edema at the moment of surgery.
