A Case of a Congenital Cholesteatoma Without Growth for a Long Term.

Congenital cholesteatoma is typically an expanding cystic mass of keratinizing squamous epithelium located medial to the intact tympanic membrane in patients with no prior history of perforation, otorrhea and ear. It is generally thought to be a progressive disease and is usually surgically removed upon detection as the first-choice treatment. As such, it is rare to be observed for a long term without progression. Here we report a rare case of congenital cholesteatoma that remained in an undetectable size and did not deteriorate mild hearing loss for 12 years. A seven years old boy was referre

Influence of marker weights optimization on scapular kinematics estimated with a multibody kinematic optimization.

Scapular kinematic estimates are altered by soft tissue artefacts, therefore experimental and numerical methods should be developed to improve their accuracy. This study aimed to assess the influence of weights applied to the scapula markers within a closed-loop multibody kinematic optimization on scapular kinematic estimates. Fifteen healthy volunteers performed static postures mimicking analytical, daily living and sport movements. Scapulo-thoracic angles were computed either from a scapula locator as the reference, or from a closed-loop multibody-kinematic optimization (MKO) including a par

Long-term hemodynamic changes in cerebral proliferative angiopathy presenting with intracranial hemorrhage: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral proliferative angiopathy (CPA) is a rare vascular proliferative disease; however, long-term follow-up reports are scarce. The authors report a rare case and document a patient's medical history over 20 years. OBSERVATIONS: A 5-year-old girl developed left frontal lobe hemorrhage, presenting with headache. At 8 years of age, angiography showed diffuse capillary ectasia without an arteriovenous shunt. Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) showed normal cerebral blood flow (CBF). She had normal growth without systemic disease. At 25 years of age, an intraventric

Endoscopic and Image Analysis of the Airway in Patients with Mucopolysaccharidosis Type IVA.

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) is a hereditary disorder arising from lysosomal enzymes deficiency, with glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) storage in connective tissues and bones, which may compromise the airway. This retrospective study evaluated patients with MPS type IVA with airway obstruction detected via endoscopy and imaging modalities and the effects of surgical interventions based on symptoms. The data of 15 MPS type IVA patients (10 males, 5 females, mean age 17.8 years) were reviewed in detail. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FB) was used to distinguish adenotonsillar hypertrophy, prolapsed soft palat

Influence of head positioning during cone-beam CT imaging on the accuracy of virtual 3D models.

OBJECTIVE: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images are being increasingly used to acquire three-dimensional (3D) models of the skull for additive manufacturing purposes. However, the accuracy of such models remains a challenge, especially in the orbital area. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of four different CBCT imaging positions on the accuracy of the resulting 3D models in the orbital area. METHODS: An anthropomorphic head phantom was manufactured by submerging a dry human skull in silicon to mimic the soft tissue attenuation and scattering properties of the human head. T

Case report: Castleman's disease involving the renal sinus resembling renal cell carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Castleman's disease (CD) is a rare benign lymphoproliferative disease that frequently involves the mediastinal thorax and the neck lymph nodes. It rarely affects extrathoracic presentations, with even fewer presentations in the renal sinus. PATIENT CONCERNS: In this report, we present a case of a 40-year-old woman with no significant past medical history who presented Castleman's disease arising in the renal sinus. DIAGNOSIS AND INTERVENTIONS: The patient visited our hospital with the chief complaint of left renal sinus lesion after renal ultrasonography by regular physical exa

Patient-Derived Training Simulator for Image-Guided Adaptive Brachytherapy of Locally Advanced Cervical Cancers: Development and Initial Use.

Image-guided adaptive brachytherapy (IGABT) using intracavitary and interstitial (IC/IS) techniques plays a pivotal role in definitive radiotherapy for locally advanced cervical cancers. However, the training opportunities for interstitial needle application are limited, preventing this technique from becoming widespread. This study aimed to develop a training simulator for IC/IS brachytherapy. The simulator consists of a soft silicone tumor phantom and acrylic tube mimicking the vagina; it has high visibility because of translucent materials and is compatible with computed tomography (CT) and

A case report of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of cecum mimicking malignant wall thickening.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMT) are an uncommon mesenchymal solid tumor commonly documented in children and young adults (Kim et al., 2012 [1]). Cecum is a rare location of this entity, may simulating a malignant tumor process. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 71 year old patient was admitted for pain in the right iliac fossa with chronic constipation evolving for two months associated with weight loss. As a diagnosic step, an abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan was performed showing a thickening of the cecal wall. There was no regional or distant metastasis. During a colon

A Case of a Fixed Giant Peritoneal Loose Body outside the Peritoneum and near the Rectovesical Excavation.

A peritoneal loose body (PLB) is tissue completely separated from other intraperitoneal organs. It is rare and usually found incidentally during laparotomy, examination, or autopsy. PLBs are usually located free in the peritoneal cavity and not in the extraperitoneal space. They are thought to originate when epiploic appendices are released into the abdominal cavity after ischemic necrosis. We report a case of a giant PLB outside the peritoneal cavity, adjacent to the rectovesical excavation, that was identified preoperatively inan asymptomatic 83-year-old man undergoing evaluation for cholecy

Facial soft tissue thickness in forensic facial reconstruction: Impact of regional differences in Brazil.

Forensic facial reconstruction aims to assemble and provide the appearance of a face over a skull, in order to lead to recognition of that individual, making possible the application of primary identification methods. The scientific literature presents facial soft tissue thickness (FSTT) tables for reference from a range of different geographic regions. However, the consensus on its importance or on how to use specific population data related to FSTT is not unanimous. Brazil is formed by geographic regions with diverse populations, which are reflected in facial features. This paper aimed to me

A non-invasive method for the assessment of gingival thickness in the aesthetic zone and the concept of the gingival geometric ratio in an Asian population.

The aim of this study was to investigate the gingival thickness and biologic width in the aesthetic zone (maxillary central and lateral incisors) in an Asian population using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as a non-invasive measurement method, prior to immediate implant placement. The gingival geometric ratio is introduced as a new parameter for assessing soft tissue stability and hence predicting the aesthetic outcome. The gingival thickness, biologic width category (normal, high, and low crest), and gingival geometric ratio (shape and configuration of the gingival tissues) were assesse

Towards an assessment of rectal function by coupling X-ray defecography and fluid mechanical modelling.

Despite the numerous available clinical investi-gation tests, the associated alteration of quality of life and the socio-economic cost, it remains difficult for physicians to identify the pathophysiological origins of defecation disorders and therefore to provide the appropriate clinical care. Based on standardized dynamic X-ray defecography, we developed a 2D patient-specific computational fluid dynamic model of rectal evacuation. X-ray defecography was carried out in a sitting position with a standardized paste whose yield stress matched that of soft human feces. The flow was simulated with

Case report: A rare case of congenital non-metastatic low-grade fibrosarcoma of the pleura in a 6-month-old infant manifested as pneumonia.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Congenital Infantile fibrosarcoma is a rare tumor in children and accounts for only 10 % of various malignant tumors in this age group. Manifestations vary according to the site of occurrence. Symptoms of the tumor located in unusual places can be misleading and obscure the actual diagnosis, which in turn may waste precious effort and time until the correct diagnosis is established. Infant malignancies should be considered to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with this pathology. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 6-month-old infant, who was a

Pediatric intussusception due to basidiobolomycosis: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis is an unusual fungal infection caused by Basidiobolus ranarum, an environmental saprophyte found worldwide. Typically, basidiobolomycosis presents as a subcutaneous infection or soft tissue tumor-like lesion, and rarely involves the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis is most common in young infants. It has no definitive clinical presentation, and almost all cases are misdiagnosed during the initial presentation. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 4-year-old Saudi boy who presented to the emergency depar

Imaging the acute abdomen in pregnancy: a radiological decision-making tool and the role of MRI.

Acute abdominal pain in pregnancy poses a significant diagnostic challenge. The differential diagnosis is wide, clinical assessment is difficult, and the use of conventional imaging methods is restricted due to risks to the fetus. This can lead to delay in diagnosis, which increases the risk of maternal and fetal harm. Imaging techniques not involving ionising radiation are preferred. Sonography remains first line, but anatomical visualisation can be limited due to displacement of adjacent structures by the gravid uterus. MRI provides excellent cross-sectional soft-tissue assessment of the abd

Concealed Foreign Body Shrouding Airway Mimicking Mass Causing Extubation Failure, Hypoxia, and Stridor.

Foreign body (FB) aspiration can present with acute life-threatening asphyxiation to recurrent infections with lung damage. Although most esophageal FBs pass spontaneously, sharp ones can get embedded requiring treatment. Tracheobronchial FBs and hypopharyngeal FBs are occasionally seen as well. We present a case of an oropharyngeal FB presenting with signs of stroke, pulmonary embolism, pulseless, and causing airway compression and extubation failure. Old age and neurocognitive disability are important predisposing factors of FB airway obstruction (FBAO), with food being the most common cause
