Medial olivocochlear-induced transient-evoked otoacoustic emission amplitude shifts in individual subjects.

Activation of the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) can be assessed indirectly using transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs). The change in TEOAE amplitudes when the MOCR is activated (medial olivocochlear (MOC) shift) has most often been quantified as the mean value in groups of subjects. The usefulness of MOC shift measurements may be increased by the ability to quantify significant shifts in individuals. This study used statistical resampling to quantify significant MOC shifts in 16 subjects. TEOAEs were obtained using transient stimuli containing energy from 1 to 10 kHz. A nonline

Olivocochlear activity and temporary threshold shift-susceptibility in humans.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Animal studies (guinea pig, cat, chinchilla) have shown that activity of the medial olivocochlear efferents can exert noise-protective effects on the cochlea. It is not yet known whether such effects are also existent in humans. Olivocochlear activity can be estimated indirectly by contralateral suppression (CS) of otoacoustic emissions (OAE). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We measured Input/Output functions of distortion products of OAE (DPOAE), with and without contralateral acoustic stimulation by white noise, in 94 normal hearing young male subjects. Seven stimuli with L2 between…

The effect of noise bandwidth on the contralateral suppression of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the bandwidth or loudness of a contralateral stimulus is the most important factor in evoking suppression of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs). TEOAEs were measured in both ears of 10 women in quiet and in the presence of one of three contralateral noise bands; narrow band (NB), wide band (WB) and equalized (EQ), all centered at 2000 Hz. The NB (100 Hz bandwidth) and WB (2200 Hz bandwidth) noises were presented at 60 dB SPL. The SPL of the EQ (100 Hz bandwidth) noise was adjusted such that it was equal in loudness to the WB noise

[Study on the bilaterally recorded ABR in the experimental model of acoustic tumor].

The ABRs were bilaterally recorded with monaural stimulation from the animal model of acoustic tumor in 10 rats. It was found that the waveform of ABRs recorded from the right dura was different from the left one. A major feature of right ABRs was that the amplitudes of wave II and wave III were decreased by 3.53 +/- 1.21 microV and 3.94 +/- 1.16 microV respectively, and that the latencies of wave IV and wave V were increased by 0.88 +/- 0.11ms and 1.37 +/- 0.10ms respectively. It suggested that the cochlear nerve near the cochlear nucleus was pressured. A major feature of left ABRs was that t

Reflex threshold shift in chinchillas following a prolonged exposure to noise.

The acoustic reflex is considered to reduce transmission across the middle ear and thereby protect the inner ear from intense sounds. The dynamic properties of this reflex seem to be a function of the duration of the eliciting stimulus. Assessment of the protective action afforded by middle-ear muscle contractions for long-term noise exposures requires the knowledge of how these dynamic properties change under such conditions. Round window electrodes were implanted in eight chinchillas. Changes in the threshold of the acoustic reflex were measured during an eight-hour exposure at 95 dB SPL to

Can Neuromodulation Improve Sleep and Psychiatric Symptoms?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review, we evaluate recent studies that employ neuromodulation, in the form of non-invasive brain stimulation, to improve sleep in both healthy participants, and patients with psychiatric disorders. We review studies using transcranial electrical stimulation, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and closed-loop auditory stimulation, and consider both subjective and objective measures of sleep improvement. RECENT FINDINGS: Neuromodulation can alter neuronal activity underlying sleep. However, few studies utilizing neuromodulation report improvements in objective measur

[The status of galvanic assessment of equilibrium].

The galvanic test is the only method of localising the site of the disease in the differential diagnosis between a vestibular endorgan or neuronal lesion. The galvanic nystagmus persists even after complete destruction of the inner ear but is impaired as soon as the peripheral vestibular neurone is damaged. We investigated 30 normal subjects, 10 patients with Menière's disease and 20 patients with an acoustic neuroma. The patients had a reduced caloric response on one side. All subjects were stimulated monaural-unipolar. The photoelectronystagmograms were analysed by determining slow phase vel

Response of the human tympanic membrane to transient acoustic and mechanical stimuli: Preliminary results.

The response of the tympanic membrane (TM) to transient environmental sounds and the contributions of different parts of the TM to middle-ear sound transmission were investigated by measuring the TM response to global transients (acoustic clicks) and to local transients (mechanical impulses) applied to the umbo and various locations on the TM. A lightly-fixed human temporal bone was prepared by removing the ear canal, inner ear, and stapes, leaving the incus, malleus, and TM intact. Motion of nearly the entire TM was measured by a digital holography system with a high speed camera at a rate of

Middle ear muscle reflex measurement in neonates: comparison between 1000Hz and 226Hz probe tones.

INTRODUCTION: Middle ear muscle reflex (MEMR) evaluation assists in diagnosing hearing problems because normal responses depend on preconditions of a healthy auditory system. Studies in neonates recording the acoustic reflex with 226Hz probes have described high rates of absence. Other studies using a high frequency probe have found higher rates of presence in normal neonates. However, few studies have compared results between low and high frequency probes in the same newborns. OBJECTIVE: To comparatively assess the ipsilateral acoustic reflex recorded by 226Hz and 1000Hz probes in newborns.

Effects of ear-canal standing waves on measurements of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions.

At frequencies above 3 kHz, standing waves in the ear canal complicate calibration of stimulus sound-pressure levels (SPLs) for measurements of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). In the literature, two stimulus-presentation strategies have been used for DPOAE measurements. In the "in-the-ear adjustment" strategy, the voltage command to the speakers is adjusted to maintain a constant stimulus SPL across frequency at the DPOAE-measurement microphone. In the "iso-voltage" strategy, the voltage presented to the speakers is held constant across frequency, on the basis of the assumpt

Clinical significance of probe-tone frequency ratio on distortion product otoacoustic emissions.

Parametric variations in the ratio of primary-tone frequencies were explored to optimize the amplitude of the 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emission for clinical purposes. Ten ears from 5 normally hearing human subjects were examined with primary tones geometrically centred around the standard audiometric frequencies of 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 kHz. The distortion product at the frequency 2f1-f2 (f1 < f2) was measured at six probe tone frequency ratios (f2:f1) varying between 1.15 and 1.40 using equal level primaries of 75 dB SPL. The results showed that a single f2:f1 ratio betwe

Comparison of uni- and multimodal motion stimulation on visual neglect: A proof-of-concept study.

Spatial neglect is characterized by the failure to attend stimuli presented in the contralesional space. Typically, the visual modality is more severely impaired than the auditory one. This dissociation offers the possibility of cross-modal interactions, whereby auditory stimuli may have beneficial effects on the visual modality. A new auditory motion stimulation method with music dynamically moving from the right to the left hemispace has recently been shown to improve visual neglect. The aim of the present study was twofold: a) to compare the effects of unimodal auditory against visual motio

Processing units in word reading by disabled readers.

The article addresses the issue of whether disabled readers can be instructed to use within-word (multiletter) units. Several analogy methods were employed. In Experiments 1 and 2 short lists of words that differ in only one letter were repeatedly practiced. In Experiment 3 the subjects blended written and spoken words in which the place of segmentation was systematically manipulated. Subjects were tested in all experiments on the reading of practiced words, on nonpracticed words that orthographically as well as phonologically resemble the practiced words, and on nonpracticed nonsimilar words.

The incorporation of level and level-invariant cues for the detection of a tone added to noise.

The potential contribution of level-dependent and level-invariant cues for the detection of a tone added to narrow bands of noise was assessed in two experiments. In the first experiment, three masker bandwidths, 40, 120, and 360 Hz, and three center frequencies, 600, 1800, and 5400 Hz were tested. For the tone-in-noise detection task, the signal to be detected was a tone with a frequency equal to the center frequency of the noise masker. The level of the added tone was adjusted so as to generate d' scores of approximately 2 in a two-alternative, forced-choice procedure. Then, the distribution

Temporal summation of repetitive click stimuli.

Monaural loudness balances were performed by eight normal-hearing subjects to determine the effect of click repetition rate on loudness sensation. Click trains of 500 msec duration were matched in loudness to a standard 500 msec 1000 Hz tone burst presented at three reference loudness levels (70, 80, and 90 phons). Click trains were presented at repetition rates of 11, 31, 51, and 91 clicks per sec. It was found that click trains at faster repetition rates required lower intensities for judgments of equal loudness sensation. This finding was attributed to the process of temporal loudness summa

The time course of the acoustic reflex.

The time course of the impedance changes caused by the contralateral acoustic reflex was investigated in five normal hearing, young adult subjects The acoustic reflex function was measured with equipment having a time constant of 15 milliseconds which permitted precise temporal measures. Temporal intervals from signal onset and termination to various portions of the acoustic reflex function were derived using an analysis procedure based on the slope function underlying the acoustic reflex response. These temporal intervals are related to physiological events underlying the acoustic reflex.

Cochlear implantation in an intralabyrinthine acoustic neuroma patient after resection of an intracanalicular tumour.

This case study describes a therapeutic strategy using a cochlear implant for a bilateral acoustic neuroma deafened patient. The cochlear nerve had previously been sacrificed on one side during tumour removal, but on the remaining side a functioning cochlear nerve was assessed by electric promontory stimulation in spite of a neuroma extending into the vestibular labyrinth. The patient was successfully stimulated with a Nucleus 22-channel implant after removal of the intracanalicular portion of the neuroma via a middle fossa approach.

Neurophysiological Contributions to Dysphonia: The Role of Cortical Silent Periods in AdLD.

OBJECTIVE: Adductor laryngeal dystonia (AdLD) is a task-specific focal dystonia characterized by involuntary vocal fold hyperadduction and impaired voice quality. While reduced cortical inhibition is a hallmark of AdLD, its relationship to acoustic measures of voice dysfunction remains unclear. This study investigated whether intracortical inhibition, as measured by the cortical silent period (cSP) from the laryngeal motor cortex (LMC), is associated with cepstral peak prominence (CPP), a quantitative acoustic marker of voice harmonic periodicity. METHODS: Thirty-two participants (17 AdLD, 15
