[Moyamoya and Down syndrome: about 2 cases].

Moyamoya syndrome has rarely been reported in association with Down syndrome. We report on 2 cases in 3-year-old and 6-year-old female children with Down syndrome, who presented with neurological deficit. Imaging (magnetic-resonance angiography and digital-subtraction angiography) revealed the classical Moyamoya pattern. The neurological deficits persisted in both cases. One patient has developed epilepsy.

[Digital subtraction angiocardiography--an alternative to traditional angiocardiography?].

Intravenous (i.v.) digital angiography has been extensively and successfully used for studying peripheral arterial vessels. Its application in the heart now results in high resolution images of the cardiac chambers. Accuracy and reproducibility of left ventricular volume determination equal that of conventional cineangiocardiography. Thus, left ventricular regional and global function can be analyzed quantitatively at rest and during exercise with higher simplicity and lower risk even on an outpatient basis by i.v. digital subtraction angiocardiography. To date, however, the coronary artery sy

Postoperative spiral computed tomography and magnetic resonance angiography after aneurysm clipping with titanium clips.

OBJECTIVE: To reduce morbidity and mortality after subarachnoid hemorrhage, it is imperative to evaluate the results of the surgical treatment of cerebral aneurysms. We investigated the usefulness of spiral computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance angiography as postoperative control examinations after cerebral aneurysms were clipped with titanium clips. METHODS: Eleven patients with 13 treated aneurysms were studied prospectively with postoperative digital subtraction angiography, spiral CT, and magnetic resonance angiography. The occlusion of the dome of the aneurysm, the presence of

Dural arteriovenous fistula with progressive dementia and parkinsonism: Two case reports and a literature review.

RATIONALE: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are rare cerebral abnormal arteriovenous anastomoses. It is uncommon for DAVFs with parkinsonism and dementia, so it is easily misdiagnosed. Neuroimaging examinations show that multifocal DAVFs are related to venous thrombosis and white matter changes, suggesting that cerebral circulatory disorders caused by venous hypertensive encephalopathy lead to dementia in patients. Digital subtraction angiography confirmed the diagnosis and subsequent treatment of DAVFs. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report 2 cases, one caused by bilateral white matter lesions and

Perfusion imaging techniques in lower extremity peripheral arterial disease.

Lower limb peripheral arterial disease (PAD) characterizes the impairment of blood flow to extremities caused by arterial stenoses or occlusions. Evaluation of PAD is based on clinical examination, calculation of ankle-brachial index and imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT, MRI and digital subtraction angiography. These modalities provide significant information about location, extension and severity of macrovasular lesions in lower extremity arterial system. However, they can be also used to evaluate limb perfusion, using appropriate techniques and protocols. This information may be valuab

Endovascular Treatment of a Traumatic Middle Cerebral Artery Pseudoaneurysm with the Pipeline Flex Embolization Device.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic pseudoaneurysms of the proximal middle cerebral artery (MCA) segments are challenging to treat. We describe the management of traumatic internal carotid artery and MCA pseudoaneurysms with flow diversion. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 19-year-old man had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Delayed digital subtraction angiography showed de novo formation of the left internal carotid artery ophthalmic segment and left MCA M2 segment pseudoaneurysms. We had initially performed coil embolization of the left MCA pseudoaneurysm. However, it had recurred 2 weeks later. We treated both

Colour duplex scanning versus angiography: a retrospective assessment of carotid stenosis.

A retrospective study was performed to investigate the reliability of colour duplex scanning as a screening method in detecting carotid artery disease. The results of this technique and digital subtraction arteriography of 100 carotid bifurcations in 50 patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy were compared. In accordance with suggested standard reports dealing with cerebrovascular disease, the diameter reduction was classified in one of five categories: < 20%, 20-59%, 60-79%, 80-99% and total occlusion. In 78% the gradings determined using digital subtraction arteriography and duplex scanni

Facial Arteriovenous Malformation Embolized Using n-Butyl-2 Cyanoacrylate and Contrast Stasis Rather Than Tantalum Powder with Double Flow Arrest to Prevent Skin Discoloration: A Technical Note.

BACKGROUND: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are congenital errors of vascular morphogenesis that occur during development of the cardiovascular system. Multiple treatment options exist, including coil embolization, Onyx embolization, n-butyl-2 cyanoacrylate, alcohol embolization or sclerotherapy, and open surgical treatments. When the AVM involves superficial regions of the face, head, and neck, it is important to consider cosmetic side effects, such as surgical scarring and skin discoloration. METHODS: A 23-year-old woman presented with a large, anterior mandibulofacial AVM first identifi

Coil and Single-Stent Placement for Ruptured Dissecting Aneurysm of Middle Cerebral Artery: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Ruptured dissecting aneurysms located at the middle cerebral artery (MCA) are rare, and their standard treatment has not been defined. Furthermore, lenticulostriate artery involvement in the dissecting segment makes treatment extremely difficult, and no previous reports have described successful treatment for such conditions. CASE DESCRIPTION: We herein report the case of a 74-year-old woman who presented with sudden severe headache from subarachnoid hemorrhage due to dissection in the proximal M1 segment of left MCA involving lenticulostriate arteries. Coexistence of a Hemispheric Developmental Venous Anomaly and Two Ipsilateral Arteriovenous Malformations: A Rare Neurovascular Association.

Although developmental venous anomalies (DVAs) are commonly associated with cavernous malformations, their coexistence with arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) remains rare. The presence of multiple AVMs associated with a large hemispheric DVA is exceptional and raises important diagnostic and therapeutic considerations. We present a rare case of this association and discuss its imaging features and clinical implications in light of the existing literature. A 62-year-old patient presented with right upper limb tremor and memory disturbances. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed a right hemis

Novel Acute Retinal Artery Ischemia and Reperfusion Model in Nonhuman Primates.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The retina, as an externally located neural tissue, offers unique advantages in investigating the effect of therapeutic intervention on the brain. In this study, we put forth a clinically relevant model of retinal ischemia and reperfusion in nonhuman primates. METHODS: Acute retinal artery ischemia and reperfusion was induced by injecting an autologous clot into the ophthalmic artery of adult rhesus monkeys, and recanalization was achieved by focal thrombolysis with tPA (tissue-type plasminogen activator). Digital subtraction angiography and fluorescein angiography wer
