African Pygmy Hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) and Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps) Sedation and Anesthesia.

African pygmy hedgehogs and sugar gliders are common zoologic companion animals frequently presented to veterinarians for routine preventive care and illness. Given their small size, intravascular access, intubation, and monitoring can be challenging, and hypothermia is a common problem during chemical immobilization. Studied injectable sedation options are limited, but can provide an alternative to general anesthesia for minor procedures. Anesthetic induction and maintenance are most commonly performed with inhalant anesthetics, such as isoflurane or sevoflurane. Preparation of all necessary

Cardiovascular Diseases in Pet Birds: Therapeutic Options and Challenges.

Cardiovascular disease, including congestive heart failure, pericardial disease, and atherosclerosis, is becoming increasingly better recognized in companion birds. A wide range of medications is available to treat these conditions, including diuretics, vasodilators, positive and negative inotropes, antiarrhythmic agents, and pentoxifylline. This review systematically discusses each of these drug classes and their potential applications in avian species. Although treatment approaches remain largely empirical and extrapolated from small animal and human medicine, the management strategies prese

Psittacine Sedation and Anesthesia.

Successful management of sedation/anesthesia of psittacine species relies on familiarity with their specific anatomy and physiology, and detailed knowledge of the recent advancements in applied pharmacology of the anesthetics and perianesthetic monitoring of cardiovascular and respiratory functions. Each sedation/anesthetic plan should be patient-specific, developed based on preexisting conditions, size, species, age, and estimated risk. Other key factors to improve safety, quality of perioperative care, and client satisfaction are anticipation of complications, extension of close monitoring t

Invertebrate Behavior for the Exotic Pet Practitioner.

Invertebrate animals comprise more than 95% of the animal kingdom's species and approximately 40 separate phyla. Yet, invertebrates are an artificial taxon, in which all members simply possess a single negative trait: they lack a vertebral column (backbone). In fact, some invertebrates are more closely related to vertebrates than to their "fellow" invertebrates. For the purpose of this veterinary article, we have elected to review a handful of important groups: Coelenterates, Gastropods, Cephalopods, Chelicerates, Crustaceans, Insects, and Echinoderms. We have primarily included behaviors that

Ferret Behavior Medicine.

Domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) are common zoologic companion animals and display specific body language and vocalizations. Social interactions, play behavior, and resting periods are important keystone in domestic ferret behavior. Specific housing and environmental enrichment are recommended to preserve the expression of normal behavior and physiology in ferrets. Presence of abnormal behaviors, including aggression, urination and defecation outside the litter box, stereotypies, and absence of play behavior, should be carefully monitored by veterinarians and ferret owners to assess fe

Abnormal Repetitive Behaviors and Self-Mutilations in Small Mammals.

Self-mutilation and abnormal repetitive behaviors in small mammals are challenging conditions for veterinary practitioners. The etiology may be difficult to identify, and the treatment is often unrewarding unless the specific underlying cause can be found. Reinforcement of the abnormal behavior may also complicate the treatment. However, medical causes, including painful conditions, should be investigated thoroughly. Owing to the small blood volume of many small exotic mammals and the associated risk of hypovolemia in case of hemorrhage, an hospitalization with potent multimodal analgesia and

Respiratory Disorders in Chelonians.

"Respiratory tract disease in chelonians can be difficult to treat and as such proper diagnostics are paramount. Infectious agents that can affect the respiratory tract of chelonians include viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic organisms. Noninfectious diseases can also develop. Because chelonians lack a proper diaphragm, changes in size of celomic organs can cause compression of the respiratory system. These conditions result in clinical signs that could be attributed to the respiratory system, such as open-mouth breathing. In this article, anatomy, physiology, and current standards for di

Renal Disease in Teleost Patients.

The number of fish as pets far exceeds the populations of any other companion animal. As our knowledge of aquatic animal species and aquatic animal medicine continues to expand, veterinary expertise is becoming more critical to the client, researcher, fisheries biologist, aquarist, farmer, and fish hobbyist. Similar to other vertebrates, fish are susceptible to infectious and noninfectious renal disease. This article compares vertebrate renal anatomy and physiology and highlights some renal disease examples.

Diagnostic Imaging of the Renal System in Exotic Companion Mammals.

Radiographs can be used to easily visualize common types of urinary calculi in all parts of the urinary tract. Positive-contrast excretory urography and cystourethrography are sensitive to diseases within the ureters and urethra, most commonly obstruction. Ultrasound is widely available and noninvasive and can be used to evaluate renal architecture, ureteral dilation, urinary bladder wall disease, and urolithiasis. Computed tomography is increasing in availability and provides a large amount of cross-sectional information quickly and noninvasively. Multiple imaging modalities can be used to es

Diseases of the Reptile Renal System.

Renal disease accounts for a considerable amount of morbidity and mortality in reptiles, in part owing to inadequate husbandry practices, such as inappropriate temperature, humidity, and access to water. Inappropriate husbandry practices may lead to subclinical dehydration that can specifically impact the renal system, which relies on vascular perfusion to function. This article aims to highlight urinary pathophysiology and summarize infectious and noninfectious causes of renal disease in reptiles as a guide for differential diagnoses to consider during clinical evaluation.

Ocular Surface Diseases in Marine Mammals.

Marine mammal eyes are adapted for underwater and air environments by increasing the mucins in tear film and having flatter corneas and round crystalline lenses. The cornea and lens are most commonly affected by environmental imbalances. Lack of shade and excessive exposure to sunlight are significant risk factors for keratopathy in pinnipeds, and likely true in cetaceans. Natural aging is also important, as sun damage and exposure to other oxidative stressors can cause cumulative damage to the cornea over time. By diminishing UV exposure and optimizing environmental factors, surface ocular di

Orthopedics in Reptiles and Amphibians.

Musculoskeletal disorders are a common cause for presentation of reptiles and amphibians to the veterinarian. A clinical approach to orthopedic cases starts with a thorough history and review of husbandry, and identification of any underlying or concomitant disease. Medical management is indicated for pathologic fractures. Traumatic fractures may require surgical intervention. Stabilization options include external coaptation and/or external and internal fixation. Special considerations must be given to shell fractures in chelonians. Many techniques used in mammalian practice can be applied to

Avian Ganglioneuritis in Clinical Practice.

Avian ganglioneuritis (AG) comprises one of the most intricate pathologies in avian medicine and is researched worldwide. Avian bornavirus (ABV) has been shown to be a causative agent of proventricular dilatation disease in birds. The avian Bornaviridae represent a genetically diverse group of viruses that are widely distributed in captive and wild populations around the world. ABV and other infective agents are implicated as a cause of the autoimmune pathology that leads to AG, similar to human Guillain Barrè syndrome. Management of affected birds is beneficial and currently centered at reduc

Medication for Behavior Modification in Birds.

The use of behavior modifying drugs may be considered in birds with behavior problems, especially those refractory to behavior modification therapy and environmental management. To accomplish behavior change, a variety of drugs can be used, including psychoactive drugs, hormones, antihistamines, analgesics, and anticonvulsants. Because their prescription to birds is off-label, these drugs are considered appropriate only when a sound rationale can be provided for their use. This requires a (correct) behavioral diagnosis to be established. In addition, regular monitoring and follow-up are warran
