Tic disorders (TD), obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are often associated with deficits of impulse control and aggressive behavior. Tic disorders and OCD are closely related on epidemiological, psychopathological and neurobiological levels, whereas ADHD and OCD phenomena seem to be at opposite poles. Research evidence on the clinical significance of associated obsessive-compulsive behavior is reviewed and linked to our own new data. Thus the analyses of a worldwide database on Tourette's Syndrome (TS) (N = 4,833) showed that that the asso

BACKGROUND: Childhood symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often persist in adulthood and overlap considerably with mood disorder presentations. This study examines how specific childhood ADHD traits relate to distinct clinical characteristics in adults with mood disorders.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 755 adults diagnosed with major depressive disorder (n = 287) or bipolar disorder (n = 468). Participants retrospectively reported childhood ADHD traits using the 25-item Wender Utah Rating Scale. We mapped associations between childhood ADHD total score and three child

Children with Down syndrome (DS) are more likely to be diagnosed with co-existing conditions, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the correlation has not been fully delineated to date. Our study aimed to examine the associations of DS with ASD and ADHD in children and adolescents using a national population-based database. In this cross-sectional study, we included a total of 214,300 children aged 3-17 years from the National Health Interview Survey. Physician-diagnosed DS, ASD and ADHD were reported during an in-person household

BACKGROUND: It is known that patients reporting chronic pain often experience trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and tend to be more difficult to treat. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental disorder, is frequently associated with chronic pain. Furthermore, patients diagnosed with ADHD are more likely to encounter trauma and develop PTSD because of their inattentive and impulsive tendencies. There are reports stating that atomoxetine (ATX), a selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor for ADHD, is effective in patients diagnosed with PTSD and ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is highly comorbid with other psychological disorders, including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Preliminary evidence suggests that youth with comorbid OCD and ADHD may experience greater impairments than children with other comorbidities; however, there is limited research examining the clinical expression and treatment response of these youth.
METHODS: Youth (7 to 17 years) with a primary diagnosis of OCD and comorbid ADHD (n = 40) were compared a sample of age and gender matched youth with OCD and other comorbidity

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are frequent and well documented in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and children with internalizing problems, however limited work has examined sleep problems in children presenting with comorbid ASD/ADHD. In healthy children, sleep problems negatively impact social, emotional, and academic functioning. The current study sought to examine diagnostic severity as predictors of sleep problems in children with comorbid ASD/ADHD. Additionally, the association between sleep and "real-life" functio

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) commonly co-occur in childhood. Inattention symptoms can be hallmarks of both conditions, however assessment tools of inattention may not effectively distinguish between the two conditions. The present study used receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses to examine the high-end specificity of the Attention Problems Scale of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) for detecting comorbid ADHD among youth with GAD (N=46). Results support the utility of the Attention Problems Scale for accurately distinguishi

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical features and risk factors of co-morbid tic disorder (TD) in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
METHODS: A total of 312 children with ADHD were involved in this study. Subtypes of co-morbid TD, incidences of TD in different subtypes of ADHD (ADHD-I, ADHD-HI and ADHD-C) were observed. Thirteen potential factors influencing the comorbidity rate of TD in ADHD were evaluated by univariate analysis and multiple logistic regression analysis.
RESULTS: Forty-two of 312 children with ADHD suffered from co-morbid TD (13.5%). Comorbidity rate

The objective of the study was to investigate the characteristics of adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or substance use disorder (SUD), especially in the context of comorbid psychiatric disorders. Subjects were adults (n = 78) participating in a controlled family study of ADHD and SUD. Four groups were identified based on a diagnosis of ADHD or SUD: ADHD, SUD, ADHD + SUD, and neither ADHD nor SUD. All diagnoses were determined by structured clinical interview for DSM IV. Rates of psychiatric comorbidity were lowest in the controls, intermediate in the ADHD and SUD gro

Handwriting is a fundamental skill crucial for effective communication and learning. While previous research has demonstrated handwriting impairments in individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and developmental dyslexia (DD) separately, the impact of their comorbidity on children's handwriting abilities remains largely unexplored. This study employed a written production task and a copying task to measure handwriting speed and legibility in children with DD-only (N = 37), ADHD-only (N = 39), comorbid DD and ADHD (COM, N = 44), and typically developing children (N = 36)

INTRODUCTION: While poorer pragmatic language skills have been found in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) populations, there has been no conclusive evidence of this. We aimed to conduct a meta-analysis of pragmatic language abilities in ADHD populations to definitively demonstrate the extent of pragmatic language deficits in these populations as compared to typically developing (TD) populations.
METHODS: Studies were identified using the search terms ((attention deficit) OR (adhd)) AND (pragmatics), and those studies were screened and reviewed for inclusion criteria, descriptive

This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by comprehensively examining the relationship between two of the main cognitive deficits of the disorder (attention and inhibitory control), symptomatology (inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity) and functional impairment in 85 children and adolescents with ADHD without other comorbid disorders. We found, independent of general intellectual functioning and age, that i) greater attentional and inhibitory deficits predicted greater severity of ADHD symptoms, ii) greater attentional and

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to identify intact and deficient cognitive processes in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and children with high functioning autism (HFA).
METHOD: Three rigorously diagnosed groups of children aged between 6 and 12 years (54 ADHD, 41 HFA, and 41 normal controls) were tested on a wide range of tasks related to five major domains of executive functioning (EF): inhibition, visual working memory, planning, cognitive flexibility, and verbal fluency. In addition, the role of comorbid oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and comor

To separate the influence of inattentiveness from memory, we examined savings scores on material previously learned in 53 children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), 63 with a reading disability (RD), 63 with both ADHD and RD combined, and 112 controls. Children with reading disabilities were impaired in their ability to remember previously-learned material unless it was repeated over four trials, whereas children with only ADHD performed as well as the controls for material presented only once. Children with ADHD did perform poorly on three subtests that are sensitive to at

We aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of clonidine extended release (ER) treatment in Korean youth with ADHD and/or Tourette's disorder. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 29 children and adolescents treated with clonidine ER. The effectiveness were retrospectively measured at baseline and after 4 and 12 weeks based on the Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S) and Clinical Global Impression-Improvement (CGI-I) scores. Safety was evaluated at each visit based on spontaneous reports from the subjects or from their parents/guardians. Significant decreases in the CG

IMPORTANCE: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects tens to hundreds of millions of adults worldwide, and preliminary evidence suggests it may be associated with increased risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. However, concerns regarding diagnostic ascertainment and residual confounding remain.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of ADHD with incident cognitive impairment, defined as MCI or dementia, using electronic health record (EHR) diagnoses and genetic liability measured using genome-wide ADHD polygenic risk score (ADHD PRS) in the same individuals.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition affecting attention, impulse control and emotional regulation across the lifespan. Although pharmacological treatment is often effective, many patients benefit from additional psychological and lifestyle-based interventions that support daily functioning.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to provide an overview of evidence-based non-pharmacological strategies for ADHD that may assist patients in general practice.
DISCUSSION: ADHD management typically involves a multimodal approach combini
