During the West African Ebola virus disease outbreak in 2014-15, health agencies had severe challenges with case notification and contact tracing. We describe the results from tuberculosis (TB) contact investigations of two high-school students. Following the development of active TB in two foreign-born students, contact investigations were performed to detect contacts with active TB disease or latent TB infection (LTBI). The two students developed pulmonary TB within 2 years of immigrating to the United States. Among household contacts, no case of active TB was identified; however, LTBI was identified in 7 of 20 persons screened (35%). Although the association of partnership concurrency and HIV prevalence has been studied in sub-Saharan settings, the impact of concurrency on HIV transmission has not. Syphilis is a well-known cause of foetal death. We describe a Danish case of foetal death in week 31 + 0 in an Iraqi-born woman. The foetus had ascites. Blood samples were positive for IgG and IgM, for syphilis, and immunohistochemical staining of the placenta showed Treponema pallidum in relation to the vessels of the umbilical cord. Congenital syphilis should be kept in mind even though it is rare in Denmark.

France has been free from terrestrial rabies since 2001. On 21 August 2004, a female dog aged 4 months died in Gironde (south-west France), after experiencing clinical symptoms suggestive of rabies for 3 days. On 26 August, a diagnosis of rabies was confirmed by the Pasteur Institute. This paper describes the measures that were taken to manage the risks to human and animal health, and analyses the alert raised in France as a result of this imported case of rabies, the third such case in 2004.

OBJECTIVE: HIV-1 post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is frequently prescribed after exposure to source persons with an undetermined HIV serostatus. To reduce unnecessary use of PEP, we implemented a policy including active contacting of source persons and the availability of free, anonymous HIV testing ('PEP policy').
