BACKGROUND: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) remain a major challenge in healthcare environments, leading to significant patient morbidity, mortality and increased healthcare costs. Automated ultraviolet C (UV-C) disinfection has been recognized as a potentially effective method to reduce microbial contamination on hard, non-porous, high-touch surfaces, minimizing the errors present in manual disinfection efforts.
AIM: To evaluate the microbiological effectiveness of an autonomous moving UV-C disinfection robot (Omnia UV-C v1.0, Ryberg B.V., Delft, The Netherlands) through microbiological

Current water treatment approaches effectively inactivate pathogens; however, they are not designed to remove trace pharmaceuticals and other emerging contaminants. Singlet oxygen (1O2) offers a promising approach to water treatment due to its high oxidation potential while also being safe for humans and aquatic life due to its short lifetime (<4 μs in water) and rapid decay to molecular oxygen. However, this short lifetime makes implementation challenging. Moreover, obstacles to delivering light to the photosensitizer (PS) in turbid water must be overcome. Here, we present a novel reactor for

Swimming pools represent a unique aquatic environment, with continuous bacterial inoculation from swimmers and high disinfectant levels to control microbial growth. Whether, how, and which groups of bacteria can survive this strong disinfectant stress and pose a potential threat to swimmer health remain poorly understood. This study leveraged the unique opportunity of a newly opened swimming pool to address these questions. Analysis of bacterial community structures in water revealed that disinfectants substantially and temporarily simplified bacterial communities, with only a few dominant spe…

Campylobacter spp. constitutes a significant global public health hazard as it is a leading cause of reported foodborne diseases. Human infection is predominantly acquired through the ingestion of contaminated food, unpasteurized milk and untreated water, prompting the widespread implementation of chemical disinfection across several sectors, from healthcare, domestic environments, and food-processing to animal husbandry. While these biocidal agents encompass multiples classes with different modes of action and efficacy, growing evidence suggests that their extensive and repeated use may unint

The demand for safe and effective surface disinfection solutions in the perioperative has led to the development of technologies beyond traditional chemical disinfectants, which are often associated with limitations including improper application, harmful residues, and environmental risks. Ultraviolet C (UVC) light has emerged as a powerful, chemical-free, and reusable alternative capable of neutralizing a wide range of pathogens without leaving residual contaminants. Despite its potential, conventional UVC technologies face limitations, including inconsistent coverage, user-dependent efficacy…

Disinfection is crucial for preventing surgical site infections. Recently, the effectiveness of sanitizers using chlorous acid (HClO2) under conditions rich in organic matter has been reported, and chlorous acid water (CAW) has been approved as a food additive. This study evaluated the potential of CAW as a new presurgical disinfectant for cattle. The experiments were performed on the paralumbar fossa of cattle in Sapporo during March (winter to spring) and August (summer). Colony-forming units (CFUs) of standard plate count bacteria (SPCB), Enterococcus faecalis (EF), Pseudomonas aeruginosa,

In this study, the malodor detection method was constructed in our laboratory using bacteria isolated from washed fabrics and some effective disinfection techniques for suppressing malodor emitted by the isolates were evaluated. Bacterial isolates from a previous study (Okuda et al. 2025) were incubated on cotton fabric in basal salt medium containing glucose, casamino acids and squalene (BSM+C) . The intensity of malodor from the incubated fabric was evaluated by a sensory method on a six-point odor intensity scale. Fabric cultivated with each isolate emitted noticeable malodor. Sulfur compou

The efficient removal of antiviral drugs (ATVs) from the water environment and the mitigation their associated disinfection risks are crucial for ensuring water quality safety. In this work, a UV-LED/PAA advanced oxidation system was constructed for the oxidative degradation of Chloroquine Phosphate (CQP), with ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LED) serving as the light source and peracetic acid (PAA) as the oxidant. Under optimal conditions of an initial CQP concentration of 10 mg/L, a PAA concentration of 5 mM, a UV intensity of 0.0263 mW/cm2, pH 4, and a temperature of 25 °C, the UV-LED

The essential technique of Goldmann tonometry is thought to have a risk of nosocomial infection, and thus there has been pressure to use single-use tonometer tips or slower and more-costly methods of disinfection for reusable tips. Here we review the evidence of infection from tonometry and the evidence behind different disinfection methods. The only infection reported to be transmitted by tonometry is adenoviral epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, which is also transmitted without tonometry and is a relatively low-morbidity infection. More serious eye infections or systemic infections have never b

The presence of microplastics (MPs) in water may affect the efficacy of the disinfection process and induce toxicity changes to MPs themselves during disinfection. Therefore, this study evaluated the two-way effects of polyethylene microplastic (MP) particles in water and wastewater during sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) disinfection. On the one hand, it has been confirmed that the presence of MPs reduced the disinfection efficiency of NaClO. The required CT (concentration of the disinfection × contact time) for a 2-4-log inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in different water samples was in

BACKGROUND: Disposable N95 respirator shortages during the COVID-19 and 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemics highlighted the need for reusable alternatives, such as elastomeric half-mask respirators (EHMRs). Two US medical organizations deployed reusable EHMRs during the COVID-19 response. In addition to wipe-based disinfection following patient care episodes expected per local policies at both organizations, postshift centralized cleaning and disinfection (C&D) was expected at one site (A), permitting shared-pool EHMR use, and optional at the other (Site B), where EHMRs were issued to individuals. Aerosol transmission is an important disease transmission route and has been especially pertinent to hospital and biosafety laboratories during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The thermal resistance of airborne SARS-CoV-2 is lower than that of Bacillus subtilis spores, which are often used to test the effectiveness of SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogen disinfection methods. Herein, we propose a new method to test the disinfection ability of a flowing air disinfector (a digital electromagnetic induction air heater) using B. subtilis spores. The study provides an alternative air disinfection test method. Th

Prion diseases are transmissible, fatal neurologic diseases that include Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) in humans, chronic wasting disease (CWD) in cervids, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle and scrapie in sheep. Prions are extremely difficult to inactivate and established methods to reduce prion infectivity are often dangerous, caustic, expensive, or impractical. Identifying viable and safe methods for treating prion contaminated materials is important for hospitals, research facilities, biologists, hunters, and meat-processors. For three decades, some prion researchers have u
