Unilateral pursuit-induced congenital nystagmus.

We describe two patients with a lifelong history of oscillopsia only when following objects moving toward their left side. Neurologic examination was normal except for eye movements. The patients showed nystagmus during any tasks that required visual following toward the left (ie, smooth pursuit, optokinetic nystagmus, and vestibulo-ocular-reflex-suppression), but had no nystagmus during fixation of stationary targets or visual following tasks to the right. Eye-movement recordings showed waveforms during pursuit to the left that were typical of congenital nystagmus.

Effects of some motion sickness suppressants on static and dynamic tracking performance.

Two studies examined the influence of three established antimotion sickness drugs on tracking performance in static (stationary) and dynamic (angular acceleration) conditions and on visual fixation ability during motion. In Study I, 40 young men were randomly assigned in equal numbers to either a control (lactose placebo), dimenhydrinate (50 mg), promethazine hydrochloride (25 mg), or mixture (25 mg promethazine plus 10 mg d-amphetamine) group. Study II used 30 new subjects equally divided into control, dimenhydrinate (100 mg), and promethazine (50 mg) groups. Following practice, tests were co

Visual search and line bisection in hemianopia: computational modelling of cortical compensatory mechanisms and comparison with hemineglect.

Hemianopia patients have lost vision from the contralateral hemifield, but make behavioural adjustments to compensate for this field loss. As a result, their visual performance and behaviour contrast with those of hemineglect patients who fail to attend to objects contralateral to their lesion. These conditions differ in their ocular fixations and perceptual judgments. During visual search, hemianopic patients make more fixations in contralesional space while hemineglect patients make fewer. During line bisection, hemianopic patients fixate the contralesional line segment more and make a small

Pediatric Injury Patterns Following the Pager Explosion Trauma in Lebanon: A Brief Report.

BACKGROUND: On September 17, 2024, a coordinated detonation of approximately 5,000 pager devices in Lebanon produced a large mass-casualty incident. Devices contained pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN). We report 5 pediatric patients transferred to a tertiary referral center for management of complex multisystem injuries. METHODS: We performed a brief report of 5 children (<12 years) referred to Baqiyatallah Hospital, Tehran. Demographics, injury pattern, surgical interventions, and short-term outcomes (up to 3 months) were abstracted from medical records. All patients received multidiscipli

Bilateral spontaneous anterior dislocation of intraocular lens with the capsular bag in a patient with pseudoexfoliation.

We report a rare case of bilateral spontaneous anterior partial in-the-bag intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation in a 75-year-old man with pseudoexfoliation (PXF). He underwent uneventful phacoemulsification in both eyes with in-the-bag IOL implantation 9 years back. In the right eye, single piece poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) IOL (+19 D) and in the left eye, single piece acrylic foldable IOL (+19 D) were implanted. An attempt at pharmacological IOL repositioning was unsuccessful. The dislocated IOLs were explanted and exchanged with scleral suture fixated PMMA IOLs. Vision improved to 20/30

Endoscopic endonasal reduction of blowout fractures of the orbital floor.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to document the usefulness of the endoscopic endonasal approach as a surgical treatment of isolated blowout fractures of the orbital floor. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Between 1997 and 2003, using only an endonasal endoscopic surgical approach, we operated on 62 patients complaining of diplopia due to isolated blowout fractures of the orbital floor. In order to perform the endonasal reduction surgery, supplemental septoplasty and/or submucous conchotomy were done. Immediately following the reduction and the fixation, eye traction tests we

A modified preparation technique for closed-system ocular surgery of human eyes obtained postmortem: an improved research and teaching tool.

PURPOSE: In addition to use for corneal transplantation, human autopsy eyes also are used for teaching and vision research. The valuable posterior video technique of Miyake usually is done with an "open-sky" preparation. Closed-system surgery in postmortem eyes is difficult because of postmortem decrease of corneal clarity and myosis. The authors have developed an improved preparation technique that allows closed-system ocular surgery in human postmortem eyes. METHOD: The cornea is dehydrated using a hyper osmolar (15 percent) dextran solution (Swinger-Kornmehl solution), which clarifies the

Assessing the validity of situation awareness measures through visual behaviours in car driving: A comprehensive review.

Situation Awareness (SA), encompassing perception, comprehension, and projection of environment is essential for effective driving performance. Traditional SA measurements have important limitations: task interruption, subjectivity, and inability to capture SA's dynamic nature. While unaffected by these limitations, visual behaviours are not traditionally used to measure SA. This review aimed to identify the potential links between SA and visual behaviours in car driving. We identified 22 studies: 15 measured both SA and visual behaviours, and seven additional studies used visual behaviour as

Eye tracking reveals expert gaze patterns during intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a highly complex procedure that involves injecting a single sperm into an oocyte, requiring extensive training and advanced technical expertise, making it a task performed by specialists. Acquiring specialized microinjection skills alone often requires several years of training. ICSI performance has been primarily evaluated based on developmental outcomes, with little detailed assessment of operators' intrinsic skills. We analyzed expertise during microinjection using eye-tracking technology, which was recently employed in surgical and sports domains

Learning Gaze Synthesizer via 3D-Eye Controlled Diffusion and Cross-Domain Feature Alignment.

Appearance-based supervised methods with full-face image input have made tremendous advances in recent gaze estimation tasks. However, intensive human annotation requirement inhibits current methods from achieving industrial level accuracy and robustness. Although methods based on generative AI can synthesize eye images to expand self-annotated eye data, these methods usually have limited model capacity and cannot effectively inject gaze information, resulting in poor quality, monotonous texture, and inaccurate gaze direction of the generated eye images. To alleviate the above challenge, we pr

Conceptual priorities shape individual gaze patterns during naturalistic visual attention.

Our visual landscape consists of not only people, places, and objects (e.g., "soldier," "stadium," "flag") but also the conceptual relationships that unite them (e.g., "patriotism"). Because conceptual knowledge varies across individuals, this level of structure may support individualized patterns of attentional selection during naturalistic scene viewing. Here, we ask whether individuals' gaze patterns reflect, in part, latent attentional priorities organized in conceptual space. Participants (N = 61) freely explored a diverse set of immersive real-world scenes (N = 100) in head-mounted VR wh

A visualization tool for eye tracking time series analysis supporting teachers and psychologists.

Eye Tracking (ET) can help improve understanding of visual attention in computer-supported interactive environments. In attention tasks, distinguishing between relevant target objects and distractors is crucial for effective performance, yet the underlying gaze patterns that drive successful task completion remain incompletely understood. Traditional gaze analyses provide limited insight into the temporal dynamics of attention allocation and the relationship between gaze behavior and task performance. When applied to complex visual search scenarios, current gaze analysis methods face several l

Effects of Viewpoint Oscillations and Gaze-Based Stabilization on Walking Sensation, Embodiment and Cybersickness in Immersive VR.

When walking, our head does not travel on a straight path but oscillates in a swaying pattern. This pattern has been implemented in Virtual Reality (VR) as "viewpoint oscillations" - which can be defined as periodic changes in position and/or orientation of the point of view to enhance walking simulations and make them feel closer to real walking. Viewpoint oscillations are especially beneficial when users cannot physically walk because of limitations of space or hardware, disability, or to avoid fatigue. In this paper, we provide new experimental work on the effects of viewpoint oscillations

Object continuity through invisible retinal motion at saccadic speed.

Saccadic eye movements rapidly shift the visual scene across the retina, raising the question of how object correspondence is established between gaze fixations. Using submillisecond video projection, we isolated the role of high-speed retinal motion from saccade-related extraretinal signals. We introduced high-speed motion in a quartet motion display, a classic tool for studying long-distance object correspondence. While motion visibility dropped to chance level at saccadic speeds, even invisible motion robustly biased object correspondence. These results demonstrate that retinal motion alone

Evaluation of data collection and annotation approaches of driver gaze dataset.

Driver gaze estimation is important for various driver gaze applications such as building advanced driving assistance systems and understanding driver gaze behavior. Gaze estimation in terms of gaze zone classification requires large-scale labeled data for supervised machine learning and deep learning-based models. In this study, we collected a driver gaze dataset and annotated it using three annotation approaches - manual annotation, Speak2Label, and moving pointer-based annotation. Moving pointer-based annotation was introduced as a new data annotation approach inspired by screen-based gaze

Face to face: The eyes as an anchor in multimodal communication.

Making eye contact with our conversational partners is what is most common in multimodal communication. Yet, little is known about this behavior. Prior studies have reported different findings on what we look at in the narrator's face. Some studies show eye gaze is usually focused on our conversational partner's eyes, other studies have shown evidence for eye gaze primarily on the narrator's mouth, and yet others find evidence for fixations on the narrator's nose bridge perhaps as a transition for eye gaze between the eyes and mouth. The current study aimed to shed light on these different fin
