Dynamic cardiomyoplasty in chronic left ventricular failure: an experimental model.

Dynamic cardiomyoplasty continues to attract interest as a therapeutic option in the management of heart failure. In a large animal model of ischemic heart failure, we have compared dynamic cardiomyoplasty with both adynamic cardiomyoplasty and a control group. Heart failure was induced by coronary artery ligation in sheep, and under the same anesthetic dynamic cardiomyoplasty (n = 5), adynamic cardiomyoplasty (n = 4), or no further procedure was performed (n = 5). After recovery the animals were housed for a further 3 months. The dynamic cardiomyoplasty underwent a recognized muscle transform

Abnormal lateral malleolus morphology and its association with physical function in Japanese adolescent competitive athletes; Cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Avulsion fractures of the lateral malleolus, detected as abnormal lateral malleolus morphology (ALM), occur concomitantly with lateral ankle sprain (LAS) in children and adolescents. We hypothesized that structural changes in the ankle joint due to ALM may contribute to deterioration in dynamic balance function. RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the differences in physical function between competitive adolescent athletes with and without ALM, and what factors influence dynamic postural stability on landing, a critical physical function associated with LAS? METHODS: This is the cross-se

A Doppler-exclusive non-invasive computational diagnostic framework for personalized transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

Given the associated risks with transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), it is crucial to determine how the implant will affect the valve dynamics and cardiac function, and if TAVR will improve or worsen the outcome of the patient. Effective treatment strategies, indeed, rely heavily on the complete understanding of the valve dynamics. We developed an innovative Doppler-exclusive non-invasive computational framework that can function as a diagnostic tool to assess valve dynamics in patients with aortic stenosis in both pre- and post-TAVR status. Clinical Doppler pressure was reduced by T

Transient Effects of Gaze Stability Exercises on Postural Stability in Patients With Posterior Circulation Stroke.

The authors sought to investigate if short-term gaze stability exercises have an effect on postural stability of dynamic standing during neck movement in patients with posterior circulation stroke (PCS). Patients in both PCS and non-PCS groups were assigned to either an intervention or control group. The intervention group performed the gaze stability exercises for 10 min while the control group was merely resting. The center of pressure velocity was calculated to evaluate the postural stability. After intervention, PCS and non-PCS showed a significant reduction in center of pressure velocity

One-month early time-restricted eating enhances long-term memory by modulating brain fluid dynamics in males with metabolic syndrome: Evidence from perivascular diffusion and global blood-oxygen-level-dependent-cerebrospinal fluid coupling.

BackgroundMetabolic syndrome (MetS) serves as a precursor to Alzheimer's disease, a condition characterized by initial memory impairment and driven by dysregulated brain fluid dynamics. While time-restricted eating (TRE) improves memory in MetS, the mechanistic role of brain fluid dynamics in this process remains unclear.ObjectiveTo investigate whether a 1-month early TRE (eTRE) intervention enhances memory performance by improving brain fluid dynamics in individuals with MetS.MethodsTwenty-eight men with MetS and 30 matched healthy male controls underwent MRI scans. Brain fluid dynamics was a

Collective excitations in quantum gravity condensates.

A central open problem in quantum gravity is to understand how continuum spacetime emerges from quantum-geometric degrees of freedom in a background-independent setting. A many-body perspective suggests that spacetime emerges as a hydrodynamic phase of many atoms of quantum geometry. This idea underlies several approaches to quantum gravity, and it has been explicitly realised in the group field theory formalism. However, quantum fluctuations beyond the mean-field regime remain largely unexplored. We fill this gap by importing Bogolyubov theory to quantum gravity condensates, showing that lead

The Dynamics of Resting-State EEG and Salivary Trace Elements in Patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

The study of salivary microelements and their neurophysiological and behavioral correlates in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a pressing issue in modern psychiatry, which, however, lacks adequate research at this time. In this study, we tested the dynamics of behavioral parameters, resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG), and salivary iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, and zinc in 30 healthy volunteers and 30 individuals with OCD before and after an emotional antisaccade task. The eye-movement data served as a measure of behavioral performance. Our research revealed cons

Modulation of electroencephalogram brain activity dynamics by 10 Hz parietal repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation: Implications for recovery of the minimally conscious state.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite the fact that the parietal cortex is associated with consciousness, the underlying mechanisms of parietal repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) have not yet been specifically investigated. The present study aims to examine the effects of parietal rTMS on patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC) and identify a novel potential target. METHODS: Twenty minimally conscious state (MCS) patients were stochastically assigned to a real or sham rTMS group in a controlled trial. The real rTMS group was administered over the parietal cortex, with a f

Effects of individually calibrated white and pink noise vestibular stimulation on standing balance of young healthy adults.

Imperceptible noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) improves standing balance due to the presence of stochastic resonance (SR). There is, however, a lack of consensus regarding the optimal levels and type of noise used to elicit SR like dynamics. We aimed to confirm the presence of SR behavior in the vestibular system of young healthy adults by examining postural responses to increasing amplitudes of white and pink noise stimulation scaled to individual cutaneous perceptual threshold. Forty (40) healthy young participants (19 males, 25.1 ± 5.6 years) were randomly divided into a group t

Relationships between micturition urgency and involuntary voiding dynamics in men with urinary incontinence from idiopathic detrusor overactivity.

PURPOSE: In men with urinary incontinence from idiopathic detrusor overactivity we determined whether bladder voiding dynamics differs between those with and without urgent micturition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively assessed urodynamic findings in 3 groups of 22 men each. Groups 1 and 2 had idiopathic detrusor overactivity with detrusor overactivity incontinence and with micturition urgency in group 1. Group 2 showed no urgency but felt a strong voiding desire just after the onset of involuntary micturition. Control group 3 included nonneurological unobstructed men undergoing urod

Subsystem mechanisms of default mode network underlying white matter hyperintensity-related cognitive impairment.

Functional changes of default mode network (DMN) have been proven to be closely associated with white matter hyperintensity (WMH) related cognitive impairment (CI). However, subsystem mechanisms of DMN underlying WMH-related CI remain unclear. The present study recruited WMH patients (n = 206) with mild CI and normal cognition, as well as healthy controls (HC, n = 102). Static/dynamic functional connectivity (FC) of the DMN's three subsystems were calculated using resting-state functional MRI. K-means clustering analyses were performed to extract distinct dynamic connectivity states. Compared

Static versus dynamic plating for multilevel anterior cervical discectomy and fusion.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Dynamic anterior plates have been popularized to promote cervical spine fusion by allowing controlled settling, thereby promoting load sharing across the construct. To date these proposed benefits have been largely theoretical and there are no studies confirming any benefits over more traditional static plates. PURPOSE: To compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of patients undergoing an instrumented multilevel anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with either a static or dynamic plate design. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective clinical and radiographic study.

Comparison of Motor Learning Abilities Using Balance Training in Young and Senior Women.

Motor skills learning is particularly relevant in rehabilitation settings, where patients often need to relearn movements that were lost due to injury or disease. The aim of the study was to assess the ability of motor learning in elder age, using balance training on a stabilometric platform (Homebalance) with visual biofeedback. Both the experimental group (senior women) and the control group (young adult women) underwent the same balance training program, after which demonstrated improvements in velocity and accuracy of movements changing position of center of gravity (COG). The groups diffe

Unraveling the Mfn2-Warburg effect nexus: a therapeutic strategy to combat pulmonary arterial hypertension arising from catch-up growth after IUGR.

BACKGROUND: The interplay between intrauterine and early postnatal environments has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in adulthood, including pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). While emerging evidence highlights the crucial role of mitochondrial pathology in PAH, the specific mechanisms driving fetal-originated PAH remain elusive. METHODS AND RESULTS: To elucidate the role of mitochondrial dynamics in the pathogenesis of fetal-originated PAH, we established a rat model of postnatal catch-up growth following intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) to induce p

Cross-modal impact of auditory experience on visual cortical entrainment in children who are hard-of-hearing.

Cross-modal neuroplasticity is a well-studied phenomenon whereby in the absence of sensory input (e.g., in individuals who are deaf or blind), the sensory cortices of the affected modality are "taken over" by the unaffected sensory systems. This neuroplasticity is often coupled with changes in the dynamics of the unaffected primary sensory cortices themselves. Nonetheless, whether these cross-modal changes extend to those with mild-to-severe sensory loss where sensory input is degraded but not absent, as is the case for children who are hard-of-hearing (CHH), remains poorly understood.
