PURPOSE: Postoperative pituitary dysfunction, a critical problem in the treatment of craniopharyngiomas, can occur even when the pituitary stalk is preserved. We hypothesized that compromise of the primary superior hypophyseal artery (pSHA) might be related to this occurrence.

Hypophysitis is a rare inflammatory condition of the pituitary gland that has three main histologic subtypes: lymphocytic hypophysitis (LH), granulomatous hypophysitis (GH), and xanthomatous hypophysitis (XH). HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 56-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with headache, especially on the left temporal side, dizziness and exercise intolerance. She had been operated three times and radiotherapy once because of pituitary adenoma with intermittend hypercortisolism. The clinical examination was without abnormal findings apart from left temporal pain on pressure on the top of the skull.
INVESTIGATIONS: Blood tests were entirely normal. At cranial magnet resonance imaging (cMRI) a left temporal tumor of 10 mm diameter was diagnosed.

INTRODUCTION: To the best of our knowledge, no specific chromosomal abnormalities have been found in the literature in pituitary adenomas. In the present study, we investigated 9 cases of pituitary adenoma and reviewed the current literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine cases of pituitary adenoma have been studied with immunohistochemistry and cytogenetic using short-term cultures.

Four patients with hydrocephalus secondary to neurocysticercosis, were evaluated making a comparative analysis of their pre- and post-operative state. The results showed that intracranial hypertension "per se" does not generate changes in the hypothalamopituitary axis function. The cortisol response to its appropriate stimulus was subnormal indicating that the intracranial hypertension affects the adrenocorticotrophic or the ACTH system.

To assess the diagnostic and therapeutic problems associated with pituitary tumors, the clinical records of 123 consecutive patients presenting with radiological changes consistent with pituitary tumors were analyzed retrospectively. Three cases of acute necrosis of a hypophyseal adenoma are reported with a review of the medical literature. Detailed clinical and hormonal studies were performed in 30 male patients with Klinefelter syndrome, proved by karyotyping. Diagnostic tests with LH-RH were carried out with application of 100 microgram of LH-RH as single stimulation and as long-term application for 7 days. Plasma levels of LH, FSH and testosterone were measured by specific radioimmunoassay. Th single LH-RG application stimulated both LH and FST secretion, while testosterone level remained unchanged in patients with Klinefelter syndrome. Long-term stimulation decreased basal LH and FSH levels and pituitary response to LH-RH .
